I actually had a bugger of a time building this plane I'm starting to hate it, several times I nearly smashed it against the wall.
It's an old pilot ok models kit, glad they don't make them anymore, I normally love making kits and can't wait to get building, but this one has tried my patience.
I'll probably smash it on maiden...... bloody thing!
I'm tempted to kamakazee it into the ground, then I'll buy a sig kit.

Going the full Dope route. Red White and Blue paint scheme. I got one coat of white on the stab and elevators with a brush, doesnt look too bad, so will see how the second coat goes, before I decide if I want to go with brushing, or just spray it and build some clouds.

Did you use primer? I didn't and the paint just scratches off the dope, I put a couple of clear coates on it now to see if that holds it together.
I'm just going to fly it the way it is.

John...I'm probably gonna show my ignorance here, but oh well.

Is thing that for real, or PhotoBunk? It looks like 4-stroke jugs on a 2-stroke crankcase to me... The Pegasus 240 & 320 look like this:

I don't see a gearbox for the camshaft on the one you have there; unless they've completely redesigned and are driving the camshaft from the back end of the crank...

[EDIT]

Yup... there it is; my ignorance showing. Looks like it's based on the FT-300 Gemini platform, not the original Pegasus platform. D'OH!

[/EDIT]

I would say it is a photostop deal. OSMG2500 is a carb for a two stroke .21 car engine. Also with 8.1 HP it would be swinging a 25"-26" prop in my opinion.

mnem, its photoshop... Its two FT-300's in tandem... if you ever have seen a FT-300, its a monster; twice the size of an FT-160.. but you're right about the cam drive gear... on a twin setup, its behind the back plate, but on a four cylinder setup, I would assume they would need an additional drive gear up front as well.

It was all in fun... if there every were a FF600, it would make that FF240 / 320 look small... and the FF600 would weigh in at just over eight pounds, great for balancing a tail heavy setup

Hey, are you talking about the Pilot 1/4 scale J-3? I have been working on one on and off for a couple of years. Very scale kit. What kind of trouble are you running into on yours? I'm just very curious, as I love Pilot kit's, and have been collecting them for years. I think you are the first person I have ever heard that said they did not like Pilot kits. She will be very scale when you get done with her, I can guarantee that for sure.

This is a 30 year old Pilot ok models kit, it is the super cub 74 in w/s, I know someone else started up pilot again but this is from the old productions.
Maybe I'm a just a spaz, I've always loved every other kit, just not this one.

LoL... yeah, just to put things in perspective... a O.S. GF40 (40cc) 4 stoke turning a 18-8 prop, produces approximately 17 lbs of static trust, and with a 20x-8, about 19 lbs static thrust... just about right for good vertical performance for a 16-20 lb aircraft... if there were a FF600, it would be just about right for a 33-40% cub weighing in at 35-45 lbs;in my opinion anyway... I've seen a balsaUSA 1/3 cub with a FT-300, and although it flew well (very scale like) it didn't have quite the vertical performance that I would like to see... I've even started second guessing this FT160 I have in this 1/4 scale cub, that will probably be close to 20-21 lbs when I'm finished with it.

.John M,
What, so you mean I was right to begin with, but talked myself out of it? DOUBLE D'OH!

My first reaction was as I said; it didn't look like a Pegasus to me. I saw one for sale at a swap meet (It was probably a 240) a few years ago, and I was just in awe of the craftsmanship and engineering of the thing; even old and abused and covered in oil and grime it sang to me. I went and did some research on it and read about it and the 320; simply beautiful; the 2-piece split crank as they did it really fascinated me. But I wasn't doing airplanes; I was knee-deep in my T-Rex 450s, so I just filed it away in the back of my brain.

I've designed and fabricated a couple small engines as machine-shop projects, so I have a keen appreciation for the engineering involved; I used to race and tune 2-cycle motocross bikes as a youth and cut/ported my own pistons/sleeves, even designed some shaped-charge heads and multiple reed-valve manifolds.

BUT... knowing that, I knew it was possible... and imagined that in an age of 3D-printed molds, a limited-production behemoth like that would have to be possible, and somewhere, there's someone with the money to burn to make it happen. If there weren't, Conley would have gone out of business ages ago.

But... I'll be the first to admit I have very little experience with model airplane engines, aside from the castor oil spraying little b@stards I used to abuse as a kid. Those were more like the old 50 FSR I have on the shelf right now; I just can't make myself rebuild and put it in that 40-size Pawnee you see in the background of my Easter pic. I've gotten lazy in my old age; just the thought of all that mess fills me with dread. I'm gonna put a gasoline engine in it if it sits for 3 years waiting. Maybe by then I'll actually know how to fly.

Sorry to be deceptive mnem... I was just playing... I'd like to see some 4 stoke engines in larger capacities like they do with the 2 strokes... our local HS has one of the OS FT300... its just amazing the quality of the workmanship... if you really like model engines, take a look at the Kavan 50 mk II... that's another fine piece of workmanship; has an oil pump and sump.

My farther and his farther use to do the same regarding dirt track racing... modified 2 stroke engines; porting / tuned exhaust, etc... hiding everything under cloth until race time so the competition couldn't see what they were up against... that was back in the day they use benzene in racing fuel.

Anyway I think we have strayed off topic again... sorry guys!!

Wow, well there's your half scale power plant acdii... supercharged to boot..

lol supero8, its never what I want; its either marginal, or way overboard... 250cc 4 stroke in deed, lol; nice looking engine though... would be nice if they would come out with something in the 70-100cc 4 stroke range, then I'll jump on a 1/3 scale like a wild cat on its prey.

I have a Dave Patrick Super Cub with a G-23 zenoah in it and it has ample power and is as dependable a motor as is out there. Mine has the magneto ignition because the model needed the nose weight and that is something to cinside when you are choosing your motor.

Hi rocky... right, but the G-23 zenoah is a 2 stroke gasser... in a 4 stroke, you would need 35-40cc to equal similar performance as the zenoah 2 stroke... with a single cylinder 2 stroke engine, you get a power stroke every revolution of the crankshaft... with a single cylinder 4 stroke, you get a power stroke every two revolutions of the crankshaft... plus a 2 stroke turns the prop at a higher rpm... then there's the argument, that a propeller is more efficient turning at a slower speed with more torque from the 4 strokes.. but when you start scaling propellers down for models, their efficiency changes with the scale factor... can you imagine a full sized piper cub engine turning its propeller at 7,000-10,000 rpm like some o theses model 2 stokes turn at... what an airshow that would be !!

BTW Rocky, what does your Dave Patrick Super Cub weigh in at?... I believe its basically the same as the Hanger9 1/4 super cub (based on the DP design).

Super08 - that DA250 is dead sexy, man. A huffed boxer twin... I wanna stick that on a go-Kart.

I'm sure we've all seen pix and movies of the Conley V8 and the Stinger Supercharged V8 based on it; these are now really mass-production toys rather than the amazing object of mechanical craftsmanship that Conley's T-Bucket was when i first saw it featured in a magazine as a kid.

Anyways... if you haven't seen it, The Internet Craftsmanship Museum is an awesome collection of pretty much every sort of quality craftmanship you can imagine, including some astounding metal aircraft and boat models, and it is also home to a very nice photo review of the Paul Knapp Model Engine Collection, including some radials that are simply gorgeous.
