RE: Great Planes Extra 330L Build
Stab mounting idea wasn't going to work, so I went with plan B. I sanded off all the microballoons I used as gap filler, then sanded the stab roots to match the fuse. They each got a new 1/8 ply root plate with dog ears for bolts. All control surfaces have been sanded down to 400 grit, ready for covering (which shows up tomorrow). Still plugging along!

Changed my mind and I'm going back to monokote on this one.

Finished the tank tray, it sits on top of F3 and F4. I took some leftover spar material to reinforce F3 and F4 and make "rails" that secure the sides of the tray. The rear of the tray is secured with 4-40 bolts that go into blind nuts that are in the reinforced F4. Today I will prep the fuse for covering.

The tank is a 32oz. I have friends that fly with those and get decent flight times. I have the space for a 40oz if I need it. My throttle servo is on the engine box floor, lying sideways in a plywood mount that gets screwed in. The receivers and batteries will be behind CG to balance. I can't use the stock equipment tray because I'm using nylon bolts to hold my wing on. When you balance yours, are you going to do it with a full tank of gas? The stock tank position is behind CG right?

Don, it is balanced with both the fuel tank and the smoke tank empty. I think it is safer that way. Naturally it will be nose heavy at the beginning of the flight with a 40 ounce fuel tank and a 20 ounce (i think) smoke tank. Do you agree with balancing empty? Yes, i believe the stock tank does show to behind the cg, but i had a tail heavy condition where i had to move everything forward to get it balance without dead weight.

I think when the tank is forward of CG, an empty tank is the most tail-heavy condition. If the tank is aft of CG, a full tank is the most tail heavy condition.
Nevermind, the instructions say empty. They must have factored in that the tank is aft of CG when they gave the CG value.

I guess I'll put mine at the back of the CG range to start, since I decided to change everything. If it goes in, I hope I at least get all my gear back intact!

I'm a goober. It clearly shows (and states) in the manual that the stock tank location is over CG. It's been a while since I looked in the manual for anything. I actually lost my paper copy, so I'm using one I downloaded from GP.
