RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Scale Nieuport 28 Build
I have been working on mine since December. I finally put it together last night. Now I will take it back apart and start covering it. I have pictures of it on my desk top but don't know to attach them to this post. Can someone please give me instructions on how to do that? Thank-You

Mark, Just click on reply on any post here and type in anything you want to say and at the lower part of the box click on the "Click here to upload images and files!" When the box comes up click on brouse. When your computer pictures and screen comes up look at the left hand file area and mine has one that says "desktop". Click on desktop and that should show everything showing on your desktop. Locate the picture you are refering to and double click on it.
If there is more than one just hit brouse again and repeat and find the other pictures one at a time.
Thanks,
Eddie of OKC

This morning I glued the leading edge onto the left wing, let the glue dry, and roughed it into shape. Now that both leading edges are on I can put the cap strips onto the left wing then round over the leading edges on both wings. After that is complete I can begin the process of joining each wing half.

Cap strips are now complete on both halves of the upper wing. Next up, shape the leading edge and join the two halves.

The block plane has got to be the most fun tool to use. Every time I use it I am amused at the long curls of wood the plane creates. The leading edge of both wings was roughed into shape with the hand plane and fine tuned with an 11" sanding bar and finished with a 22" sanding bar.
I made a wooden jig with the wings profile from the plans to ensure the leading edge took the same shape throughout it's length.
Tomorrow I will adjust the roots of each wing half for the tiny amout of dihedral and hopefully I should be able to glue them into a one piece wing.

Yea, we were done flying somewhat early. A little too much heat and a little too much wind cut the day short. Was blowing about 15 mph with some gusts of about 20.

In preparation of joingin wing halves I rounded off the wing tips. This is much easier to do when each half is still apart and can be placed adjacent to one another to compare the curves.

Wings are now one piece...
The instructions tell you to place the ply joiner in its position then soak the area with CA. I opted to "butter" the back of the ply joiner with epoxy and clamp it in place while the epoxy cures.
To ensure there is the correct amount of dihedral I have two blocks placed under the outermost W1 ribs. Each block lifts the tips up to a height of 1" as specified by the manual. The height of these lifting blocks is less than the manual stated.

It was worth the extra work to get the stringer straight as they really show up when you cover them. Will try to some more pictures showing the stringer of the fus covered.

Your Nieuport looks really great Mark....
Quick question for you reference the top wing.
When I added the 3/32 X 3/4 X 10 1/8" Cabane Strut Mounts I came into a problem. The center ribs have a notch which allows the Cabane Strut Mounts to drop down just below the level of the sheeting. The part I am referring to is on Page 10 of the manual on Step 7 / Photo 20. My plan is to install a second plywood Cabane Strut Mount to the wing to bring them flush with the level of the sheeting / cap strips and prevent future crushing of the wood when the wing is tightened onto the fuselage. There will also be a doubler in the wing between the ribs, as referenced by the manual, for the blind-nuts.
Did you have a similar issue?
Mine is the same on the front and the back.
By adding a second ply Cabane Strut Mount I am only adding more strength with minimal weight gain so not too much of a problem. I'm just curious how you did your upper wing mounting.
Photos are of area in question. As you can see in the second photo the mounting plywood would be below the level of the sheeting. I want the plywood to be level with the sheeting and the surface on which the wing bolts. If I sheeted over the mount the balsa sheeting would crush when the wings are tightened.

I encountered the same issue with the top wing mounts. I sheeted over the area with a strip of lite ply instead of balsa.

Sounds like a good plan then. That's what I'll do.
Thanks

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Scale Nieuport 28 Build
When I went to install the cabane strut mount I found that Balsa USA had given me a piece that was only 9 1/2" long so it won't fit. I went to my pile of plywood and found a piece that I could get two 10 1/8 pieces out of. I also realized, like you, that 3/32 was too thin. So I used a thicker piece that matched the thickness of the sheeting. Problem solved.
I just finished putting the solartex on the bottom of the top wing. Love this stuff made doing the wing tips easy. I only had time to put the two. pieces on the bottom of the wing. If I get home early enough from my meeting tomorrow night will do the top of the wing.

I am currently laminating up some plywood so I can continue with my build. I had some 1/32" ply that I am laminating into some 3/32". Once the lamination dries I will cut it into the parts for the wings.
Work will continue tomorrow morning.
Got any photos Mark?

As planned I doubled up the ply cabane mounts in the center of the wing. Now the ply is the surface in which the cabanes will mount against and the ply extends even with the wing's center sheeting. The issue was easy to fix and relatively minor.
That's it for the upper wing, for now. The sheeting on the top wing is left off until the wing is mounted to the fuselage. By leaving the sheeting off the builder can get to the blind-nuts. Time to move onto the lower wing.

Finished covering the top and bottom wing. Tried to send pictures but the computer is not cooperating. Will try another night. Running out of nights to build. Meetings next 2 nights and than move to summer camp until the fall. So I will try and keep in touch but you my not hear much from me for awhile. Will keep checking in on your progress from work. Good luck with the rest of the building. If you have more questions I will try and answer them for you.
Good Luck
