Sealer Question?

Has anyone tried to cover an air frame after using sanding sealer on the plane?? Just a light sanding with very fine paper gives the frame such a nice smooth finish but I'm wondering if the heat from the iron will melt/soften the sealer and have it act like something like Balsarite or lacquer hair spray??
Looking for anyone that has done it, not opinions about it. I have my own opinion but would like to know the fact.

I have not tried it, but the sanding sealer is lacquer based, like hair spray and balsarite, I see no reasnn why it wouldn't act in a similar fashion.
I suggest that you do up a test piece, and see what happens.

Gene, are you saying that using hair spray softens when you put the covering on? I use the cheap Aqua-net all the time.
BTW- your plans will be shipped this coming week.

Just my opinion, What do you need a sealer for. I have used all type of them and all they do is add weight. If you sand with reasonably fine paper wipe down with alcohol and tack off with a good tack cloth you will never need it. The only place you would need a sealer is where fuel may get through[:@]

A number of reasons, like I already sanded the wood way too thin and just wanted to smooth it out a bit more without sanding the wood anymore. It is a float plane, not worried about fuel at all but water proofing doesn't hurt, it's going electric too. I'm thinking it would soften just like balsarite or lacquer hair spray too.
Yes Gene, the reason for using cheap lacquer is so it softens/melts and holds the covering down better. It's an old trick for used planes with a bit of oil soak.
Deft sanding sealer gasses off about 80% of it's weight, it's one of the reasons I use it for glassing, that and it is so easy to work with. I started glassing the pontoons yesterday. Any weight gain will be almost nothing so I'm not worried about it a lot.
Can't wait to see the plans Gene. More plans means the Ultra Sport gets pushed back even farther!!! I just put two more builds in front of the kit.
I can't help myself, just too many cool planesw out there I haven't built yet!!
