Rich, I like that "retro" stab - kinda brings the whole design back to its origins. Probably should have done something like that with my Mk-II when I built it, might do that yet. You going to change the horizontal stab too?

I have to say that I really like the look of Rich's "retro" stab too!

Dave, if you decide to mod your Mk-II please show us, I would be interested to see it. I would consider something similar on my Mk-II if it wasn't my first plane and hadn't just epoxied the stabs on.

Nothing quite as "retro" as the real thing. Original Mk 1 Kadet:

Aw, spaceworm, you're tickling my CA itch. That's alright though, the Super Monterey will be done as soon as the new monokote arrives so I can finish the tail (tomorrow according to UPS), as will the CG Eaglet within another week or 2. Yeah, it just may be time to start back with my original RC bird (drooling, drooling).

I love the smell of CA in the morning.

Love the smell of castor even better.

Wow! It looks like he almost copied my vertical fin and rudder.
I'm almost done with the stab, for it's shape I laid the vertical fin/rudder down on the stabs plan and copied the outline. My computer is down now so I'll have picture in a couple of days.

Hey guys, I'm not dead and it's been several weeks since I did any serious work on my Kadet. I was cleaning up my shop and found a really
nice block of foam and decided to cut a foam wing for my Kadet. Since a Kadet wing is mostly a flat bottom wing I only had to cut the Top
airfoil. In these pictures the bottom of the wing is still dirty but will be block sanded clean before I 3M-77 glue the sheeting on.

Not a thing wrong with a foam-wing Kadet. Neat idea! I think this is the first one I've seen.

Richard nice car! But If memory serves me only 25% of the TR-4As built without the independent rear suspension. I haven't driven the TR-4A with the IRS but I would think it would have cornered better. Then again I have always wondered why they went disk front/drum rear instead of the all for disk brakes Triumph Standard tested at La Mans.

Come on, this is Triumph, they couldn't understand you wanting roll-up windows.

Actually racers preferred the solid rear axle, and that is likely why Standard Triumph continued importing the solid axle version even after IRS was introduced. Later Triumphs were IRS. A good friend raced TR6's and was continually replacing the IRS U joints, as well as being beat by TR250's fitted with solid axles. My MGB, new in 1964 had front discs and rear drums as did the TR4a and my 66 Spitfire. My 59 AH Sprite had four wheel drums, and the 66 Mg Midget had 2 and 2.. My 66 Porsche 911 was the first car I had that had four wheel disc brakes; my 74 BMW 2003Tii also had four wheel discs as did my Audis and Fiat X 1/9. Alas, my 74 Ply Duster 318 CID and my 84 Chevy Celebrity had front discs and drum rears, but were POS systems. Cost was the driver from going to 4 wheel discs, The parking brake was also an issue. I have not owned an American car since 1984. I now have a 1987 BMW 325 for my daily driver. My wife drives a Toyota Highlander sport.

Sincerely, Richard

Triumph Cars did have roll up windows, at least from 1966 on (TR4a and Spitfire). The Triumph motorcycles ( I rode a 650 Bonnie), not made by Standard Triumph, did not have roll up windows, even on their sidecars. DYK, The Triumph cars used Engines that were also used in Furgeson tractors. I was often asked how my tractor ran.

The V8 engine used by British Leland and a number of other European car manufacturers such as Saab was a 215 CID Buick/Olds design licensed by GM.

Morgan also used that engine as did the Rover. I had a friend that put one in an MGA. Was not that much more weight than the original 1600cc, with more than twice the engine capacity. I am surprised that the engine has not been more used. Maybe being engineered by GM meant it was not much of a performance engine. Also. being aluminum may have been an experiment that was less than a success for GM, as was the case with many of the GM exercises. Chapparal and maybe later Corvette being exceptions.

Sincerely, Richard

We're getting a bit off topic, but cars can sometimes become airborne. My "67 GTO could go from 120 to zero all day with four drum brakes, at least until they got wet. And nothing beats a nice solid rear axle with posi-traction for getting out of muck and snow. I don't care for front wheel drive. It just wears out tires and expensive CV joints. and you can't spin good donuts.
BTW, I have a '64 Sprite which is waiting for me to put its engine back in. It even has roll up windows.

I don't know Flight Risk, my buddy Dave's 76 Honda Civic CVCC would do awesome backwards donuts with his front wheel drive!

I remember the Sprite ended up being bought out by MG and made the MG Midget. I liked the Sprite better it had the till front engine access. The earlier Bugeye Sprite was my first choice.

I had a 59 Frogeye Sprite. Loved it. Thought I "needed" a bigger car, got a 64 MGB. Loved it, 'til I got the Porsche bug; had a 66 911 for 8 years, 'til family grew to 4 people. Got the wife a family car and me a 74 BMW 2002Tii - awesome.

Sincerely, Richard

Yeah but cut your rear wheel drive car and half and see how far you can go. At least the FWD car will still go, until it runs out of gas. LOL. Now if you haven't seen someone purposely cut one in half and put a gas can up front to run it, you aint seen nuttin! Craziest thing I ever saw, especially going backwards, it does a reverse wheelie.

My 66 Midget rusted so bad that if I opened the door to get in, the body (no frame) bent so the door wouldn't close. I just left the top down and climbed over the door to get in. This was in Maryland. How has the Sprite held up with the CO winters? Good luck.

Sincerely, Richard

Dang! Richard was that thing safe to drive? My TR-3A rusted out the floorboards and the previous owner installed fiberglass panels to replace them (TR-3s have frames). He cut around the access hole for the jack so that detail was maintained. Old British sports cars are fun PROVIDED you like to tinker. I would garage mine for winter and there was always the excitement of discovering what broke while in storage. I'll never forget starting it up the first time one spring with the clutch petal depressed only to discover when I hit the started the main spring in the clutch master cylinder had broken and it was still in gear! Luckily the engine didn't catch and the drywall caught the car.

Getting back on topic what are the differences between the Mk I and Mk II Kadets?
