Gary, as you already know "gassers" don't make a mess like glow fuels, so unless you're running a smoke system, you could get away with not clear coating the stock Solartex. Having said that, general plane clean-up is so much easier with a clear coating applied to the stock surface.
Alan, if you had to reapir a hole in the fabric a patch similar to how you would repair Monokote would be done...a win-win situation...

Leroy...I'm here! It's phesant season...and the phesants are winning!
No doubt you have already completed your fuel system install, but here is what I did. I use a 2 line fuel system with a "T" and a fuel dot. The vent line gets looped around the tank and then to an outside drain on the bottom of the fuselage. The "T" in the case of the SW is on the left side near the aft end of the cowl. The fuel tank is mounted to a shelf above the CG. On my SW, the wing will bolt on as designed. I'm relativel sure I will need to take the wing off at some point. Having said that, I see why you are permenantly attaching the wing due to the top hatch going back of the cockpit...it's structural. I would attach some photos but I have pulled all of the gear out when I covered the plane.
Drube: I concur with what VJ and Leroy have said about Solartex! I don't think I've ever had a hole poked in the covering...it's much stronger than the plastic coverings, but I see no reason why a patch couldn't ironed right over the hole or tear in the fabric. Then a bit of clear ot topcoat color over the patch to match the rest of the surface.
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Thanks Alan, looking forward to them.
I was going to do the Ryan after finishing the Pitts but Alan showed me a photo of a SW/SD and I fell in love with it. No I am not posting a photo, don't do it Alan, not until closer to actually building it. Now all I need is some one to pony up a set of used plans. Or I could just buy a kit from SIG!!!!

Murphy you should have a freezer full of birds by now, all of ours have moved into residential areas and you can't shoot there, smart birds.
I thought you might be bolting your center on, makes access better up front, mine is pretty tight so a chin hatch is in order. I really need the DA fuel dot so I can get the mount for it installed, if I knew the dimentions that would sure help. I want to glass the fuselage and I want every thing finished before I do.
I have been doing the hinges on ailerons and fillet around vertical fin where it meets the back of turttle deck, chin hatch is next. I'm in no hurry because needed covering is still a couple weeks out. I will see if I can come up with some pictures just to add some color to the thread.
Murphy if you have the measurements of the DA fuel dot it would be nice to have them.
Thank you, Leroy

Drube, Vincent always has such nice comments but he does a build thread that is second to none, I'm just adding to a great SW presentation that got me fired up. It's a really cool plane and a very fun build.

You're not getting off that easy! lol Your work is excellent and the three piece wing is beautiful! I could only hope my skills are as half as good as yours one day!

Leroy, do you need the dimensions of the fuel dot? I called RC Buyers and had them measure one for you. The dot needs a 3/4" hole (which will be on the tight side). The overall outside dimension of the dot is 1-3/8".

Leroy: As I said...the phesants are winning! Got a couple in the freezer and only 1 more trip planned! I didn't use the DA fuel dot...one by Sullivan I think. Yes, it's important to install everything prior to covering and finishing. And, as is typical for me, I think I will need to rework my top hatch. The cowl goes over the front of the hatch and I don't think I can remove it without removing the cowl. And if I do make another hatch, it won't have a front cockpit...I like your mod! At least a seperate part is fairly easy to re-do.

Drube the only way you get that experience is by doing it, take your time and think it out and if you need some direction you can always find it on RCU

Went to shop and got some work done. Made the fillet to finish off the tail mate to fuselage, it will have that small dorsel to fin on it and the unit will be epoxyed on during final assembly, will make it plenty strong back there.
Made the drill guides for aileron hinges and drilled the holes, I don't know how you would do it without the guides. I try and keep a tight fit on the hinge line, it all lined up nicely. I will add to aileron ends to adjust the end gap, Thanks to vincent I got the fuel dot mount made and inserted right behind the cowl on left side, I had the bit to cut the flat bottom in it 1 3/8" like vince said, looks big, hope he is right. Cut the pieces to make wing tips, will keep them as hollow as I can and try to keep the glue line out of the sanding area. I could not find any balsa blocks big enough to make them from one piece, I will insert a 1/16" ply in trailing tip to help protect it from getting broke off if hit.
With Thanksgiving here I probably won't get much more done until next week, thats when I'll glass the fuselage and prep it for the details. I don't like chart tape for pannel lines and will scribe the lines and make all skin joints butt joints rather than laps. This is the part I really like to do, make it come alive. I have never did raised rivets and wonder what is the best glue to use, maybe canopy cement. The surface will be pretty slick so I need something that will stick on it. I did do some tests with Tightbond but the centers collapsed when it dryed and I didn't like that look. Rivets need to be 1/16" to be scale and Dzus fasteners are 1/8" scale on cowling and will likely scribe them in also. Did this on my Mustang, scribed the whole thing except they were flush rivets.
Would be greatful for help on the right glue for my rivets.

Looking good Leroy, I have had good success finding large balsa blocks at Hobby Lobby. Your bird is going to be sweet, going to be hard for anyone to top this build.
I need to setup my building board now that I am done with my P-47. I am thinking of using the DLE60 twin instead of the OS 40cc four stroke. I remember when I did my big chippy it had a DLE30 and weighed 20+ lb, flew very scale but when I put the DLE55 in it, it became a really fun plane.

Leroy go check how I did my rivets on my Ryan STA thread...it was a lot of work but they are the most realistic rivets I have seen to date. This method that I used is a perfect application for you since you are glassing the fuse. The fuse will need to be glassed and then you shoot the primer on. Once the primer and filler is applied the rivets are secured to the primer with a soldering iron.

Tony nice words from a builder I admire, Vincent Is another, you put your heart and soul in your builds and it shows. There is much I could learn from you both. "Yeah" you like power, me too but I'm better off with a bit slower plane, not sure I could keep up with 120 MPH plane like my mustang, 90 is even fast for me.
