JWRich, actually this was the first year in 6 years I wasn't there. My wife told me all year about the family reunion we were having, I was like "Yeah, Yeah" her family is pretty active and they have about 3 big get togethers a year.

Then 3 days before the reunion I realized the reunion and Owatonna were the same weekend. The pictures I linked to were sent to me , and I just passed them on. I was on the fence about going this year until I remembered how many Guys from Oklahoma were promising to come up with WW1 models. But then the reunion kept me away.

It was a bit of a bummer because watching WW1 is really about the most fun for me, I seldom fly at events. It always cracks me up though, After going to that Owatonna field all my friends and I are asking ourselves.. How do we fly off this tiny field at home? hahahahhaha

I saw the pictures and said to myself....He was at Owatonna and did not bother to say hello? I was thinking that I must have made a comment that made you mad. I am glad to see that this is not the case. I think you would have been happy with the WWI flying. There were 5 1/3 scale DRI's along with many other 1/3 scale birds. We even put 14 aircraft in the air for the Saturday noon show. ( scared the crap out of me to fly with that many planes) But as you can see from the pictures, the cross wind got a few of us on landings. And what is it about photographers that they just HAVE to take a picture of DRI's when they are on their nose?
As to the flat 160, I thing the 1/4 scale Pup or DRI would be a good fit.
After I smashed my black and yellow 1/4 scale DVII. all I have left are the wings. Picked up another DVII kit and was looking for a new paint scheme. Came across a picture of the Fokker V8. I have the wings, and stretching the fuse is no problem. But how in the heck would I go about finding where the CG should be located? I think the V8 would look neat at the field.

Did you have the 1/4 scale Fokker D-VII at Owatonna? How did you smash it?

I was at the Owatonna fly in. ITs my home field. I was flying the 1/3 scale DRI that looks like the one on the new SMMAC sign. I also flew my Corsair, but after 2 flights, one of the gear turned sideways on landing. flipped the plane and stripped the gear. So that was out for the event. But its all better now.

Gee... I thought it was a lot of fun. The Corsair is a 20cc arf, and one gear just needs to be replaced. The DVII was 8 years old and was more glue than wood on the inside. I saved all of the servos and motor, guns, landing gear, and so forth. So all in all not to bad, and I love to build. I am glad to see that the gang from OK. had a good time. They are a great bunch of people and the planes they bring are very nice. I look forward to next year. Who knows what I will have built, crashed and rebuilt by then.

I think its going to be a nice Sunday this weekend. Last chance perhaps here in the land of MinnaSNOWta to get in a flight or two. Foodstick? Got plans? Your DRI and mine, flying side by side? Sounds good. You could even bring the pesky Camel thing. Of course anybody that is ready would be welcome to join in.

I thought you were planning on being down this way Sunday? I did send you a PM....I have so much stuff packed out of the way for the winter, and the 1/3 DR1 wings are stored away.. I think I have my cowl repairs done on the Camel, and I have been gluing a bit on a crashed Proctor N28...

Thats the problem, I get so into building that I start slipping away from flying..

My next Balsa USA DVII (my 5th I think) build is on the boards. I threw out the V8 idea. Too many wings and a long time to set up and tear down at the field. I am building an everyday flyer. So the list of changes to the kit and scale up grades will be short. My DRI had about 80 changes to the kit, I will try to keep it down to around 40 or so on this one. A nice easy build. First thing to go is the silly round ailerons. They should be more square. I was going to add the cut outs on the leading edge of the wings, but I think the other times I have done that it weakens the wing a lot. So that will stay non scale, but stronger. Add an airfoil to the horizontal stabilizer, solid spreader box on the landing gear instead of open bay covering....I have to keep telling myself this is the everyday flyer. KISS Keep It Simple Stupid.

Jeff, will you be doing a construction article? I think everyone would like to see it. Good winter project.

Default Balsa USA Laker

Has anyone done the Laker, I am getting ready to get one, every since I saw it for the first time I knew I wanted to build one in the worst way. Love float planes and this one just looks like a great one!

I never built one but a friend had one and he loved it. When he was not at his pond he flew at our field off the grass. Will you be doing a construction article, I don't thing think I have seen one done here.

Hairy, I had a friend build one of the Delta wing seaplanes from BUSA.. Maybe there is only the one? Anyhow I think he used balsa on the bottom of the fuse and glassed it.. But he ended up going to liteply and glassing it after a few flights. He is not a bad flier but he said it just didn't hold up to the abuse on the landings.

hope this saves you some trouble.

I am re-buliding for 3rd time my 25 year old J-3 cub. I will be using cub yellow Solartex this time.

Does anybody know what spray paint can be used that will more or less match the cub yellow Solartex?

Thank you

I have had good luck matching sorlartex with latex paint from Lowes. I matched the red covering with the latex paint with paint cards by taking the outside in the sun. Then I sealed the Solertex with Minwax Poly.

A build thread for the DVII has been over done (just an opinion). But I could post the changes/up grades. That might be worth the space on this thread. Matching the solartex is easy. Take a 1 inch square piece to home depot or other paint center, and they will match it. My last two planes were done that way and the color was great. Behr house paint was what I used. But if it is a nitro plane then latex will not hold up.

Thank you both. Yes I was aware of the HD color matching services. But since I do not have a compressor o spray painting gear, i thought perhaps there was a aerosol rattle can available close to the solartex cub yellow ... It will be gas powered. Will check the Mniwax Poly, isthi s water based polyurethane? what finish do you use (gloss, etc.)

Gerry
I also have a framed DVII. Will finish that one after the cub. The Fokker will be colorful (LOTHAR's mount) yellow, red, white, lozenge. Electric power most likely

I use the water base Minwax Poly for areas that will not the exposed the raw gasoline, it seals against dirt 7& oils in daily flying. The areas that may be exposed to gas or heavy exhaust, I use the oil base Minwx poly. I also use the mat or satin finish.
