Default SIG Something Extra, GP Skybolt or GP Ultimate

Probably sound stupid but I'm been fighting my indecision regarding which kit to get, to give you guys a quick background: I like biplanes, at the moment I'm been flying for some time a SIG Hog Bipe, storage space is limited(wife in the way) and I would like to keep it in the 60 size(budget).

I'm been drooling for so many kits:P-47, U-Can-Do 3D, Phaeton II, DR1, etc, etc; finally I narrow it to this 3:
- SIG Something Extra
- GP SuperSkybolt
- GP Ultimate

Any comments on this 3 kit would be greatly appreciated.

Given that choice, I would say that a lot depends on what engine(s) you have.

Since you have a preference towards bipes, that should eliminate the S.E. right off the bat. It also has completely different flight charectoristics from either of the other two. The Skybolt is a moderate build and the fuse has a reputation for being a bit on the heavy side but they fly very nicely if you fly it fast. The Ultimate is known as a good flier as well, but smaller than the Skybolt and a bit boxy looking.

That may not help much, but I guess I'm trying to say you need to decide what you want out of a model before trying to decide which of the above you want to build next.

Men I'm in a point that I star looking park fliers; I'm a little on the hotdoging side of flying, and yes I'm a bipe freak and I have never own a low or mid wing plane I jump right to the bipes.

The 2 wing thing causes storages problems and I heard a lot of good things about the SIG SE but I have never had the oportunity to fly one.

Why not look at the Sig Ultimate Fun Fly?

I have an SE and while it is a very good sport plane, it has not lived up, in my opinion, to the hype that surrounds it. Granted the CG is still a little forward on mine and moving it back will more than likely help smooth things out while making it slightly more responsive, but I've never seen a slight CG change make that much difference. I will also admit that I flew nothing but pattern planes for several years so I am spoiled. But, I just don't think it's as great as a lot of people have stated.

YMMV,
John

The Sig SE builds fast!! so it'll be off the kitchen or dining room table in a few weeks, as opposed to building two wings! Also, since it is two wings, storage and transport is pretty easy. also, it's a 40 sized plane....

I'll second the Sig Ultimate Fun Fly. Give it a look on Sig's website.

Minnflyer, I'm not into profiles, there is something that keeps me away from them, tell me something, what are you using in your Skybolt(engine and servos)?

I've built all of them except the Sig Fun Fly, but I have flown them all.

The Skybolt requires quite a bit of building and it always seems to come out tail heavy. No matter what I do. It will be marginally powered with any .60

The Goldberg Ultimate bipe requires less building, but still more than the last two. A good .60 will fly it fine.

The Something extra is easy to build, and fly. The .60 would be way too much for it. It has a VERY wide flight envelope.

The Fun Fly does not like to land and stay off it's nose, but it flys ok. But just ok.

Of them all, my choice would be between the Something Extra if your in a hurry, or the Ultimate if your patient. Both have strong high points. You could always look into the 40 size Ultimate ARF that Hobby People sells (hobbypeople.com). It's easy to assemble, inexpensive, and flys well. It's designed for a .46, but it works better with a .60 on the vertical performance. Goldberg also markets (through Great Pains) a 60 size Ultimate ARF. It's a little pricey, though.

I have a skybolt and am building an ultimate fun fly. (I too like 2 wings) I LOVE flying the skybolt. It's a sweet plane and will do most "normal" manuevers beautifully. It's not an all out aerobatic bipe, which is why I'm building the ultimate. It promises to be pretty exceptional. The ultimate fun fly has been A LOT easier to build than the Skybolt. Profile fuse and strip ailerons, etc. I guess it just depends on how much building you want to do and what kind of flying you want to do when you're finished. Heck, build them both like me!!!

Sorry, I missed this when you posted it.

I have a YS 91 in my Skybolt, Also, it was not tailheavy, in fact, I even had to move the battery pack in the back of the Fuse behind the wing.

I have the great planes ultimate and I love it. It flies very good on a 46 size engine and is a small plane. It is easy to take apart and transport. It is my favorite plane to fly. It is capable of just about anything. Very easy to build. The only thing that I don't like is it is hard to see when flying. You have to keep it close.
