i was wunderin, does an O.S. .46 have enough power for unlimited verticle on a Great Planes Extra 300 40? i won't be able to do that for a while but i just want to know if when i get good enough if i can torque roll this plane.

It will have a damn good vertical performance, but not enough to hover on.
Technically, depending on your altitude and weather condotions, you MAY be able to hover it, but for hovering, you want LOTS of EXTRA power to pull you out of a jam if need be.
There are lots of planes that WILL hover with that engine... and there's always NEXT Christmas!

Mudsurfer,
I concur with MinnFlyer. This is not the plane to hover and torque roll. Put a .46 in it, and fly the heck out of it! If you want to learn to hover/torque roll, buy a Funtana or UCanDo3D etc, etc...
If you put a really oversized engine in the Extra 300s 40 size to hover it, it will be too heavy to enjoy it's great flight characteristics.

right now i am looking at an .80 size four stroke
here is link: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXAN94&P=0
would this be any better? it says only .48 to .70 for four stroke but i want the BIG MEAN sound and performance
thanks

I had the ARF version and used a Saito .72 on mine, perfect combination. I have a friend that has one with an OS 50SX and it flies very well, and FAST with that engine. I liked the .72 much better though.
Keep this plane LIGHT and you will really love the way it flies. Get it heavy and you'll probably wind up with a snapping fool that won't last long.

In my opinion, setting up a plane for 3D while you are still learning the basics is a mistake. With their neutral stability, high power, and extreme throws, you will miss seeing what a real plane flies like. Not to mention, good 3D planes are usually fragile to keep weight down. Even a bad landing could break it in half.
The Extra will fly beautiful maneuvers with a "normal" engine. I would practice until you are 100% confident in every attitude. Then get a true 3D plane to learn hovering.

Well I completely missed on the 3D possibilities with this plane. This really is NOT a 3D design and it shows. The plane is a great flier and it's very smooth and precise, fun to fly and does what it can very well.
The tail has control surfaces that are to small to 3D with and would require major redesign that would result in probably very little success toward 3D.
I really liked mine and am considering getting another. I did a vertical snap too low and got the plane in an oscillating death snap(right snap, left snap, right.....) that I couldn't pull out of, learned a lesson there that I have not repeated since! The only change I would make to my next one is to make the rudder a bit larger, knife edge needed a lot of rudder to hold it and needed to be done at over half throttle to maintain altitude.
If you really want to build something that will 3D on a .46 consider an OMP Edge 540FF, I love mine, does anything I want it to do and while I have my .72 on mine I have seen them fly with a ball bearing .46 and it's more than enough.

nevermind
i just thought with a 80 size four strike it would be able to go up straighter, but i was gonna get a LONG LONG time after i can do the good aerobatics, in my mind the ones with names i can't pronounce HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
enough of that but i know i will LOVE this plane without all the not-needed extras
thanks guys

Mudsurfer,
The .80 is a nice engine but weights 22 oz. which is sort of heavy for this plane, a lot like putting a .61 on it. The Extra really flies well when it's kept light, .46's and .72's weight about 17 oz. which on a small plane like this can make a big difference.
The GP Extra is a GREAT flying plane and I think no matter what you do with it you will like the way it flies. We are just attempting to help out a bit with the experiences we have had flying them. The Saito is more expensive but worth every penny IMO. If you do go with the .80 you will probably have to relocate one of the servo's into the tail to get the plane to balance without adding lead. Like I said keep this plane as light as possible for maximum enjoyment and you can't go wrong with it.
