well I finally flew mine what a great flying plane, I was very impressed! I wish it had a bigger rudder then I think it may hold a knife edge. Anyne using a 4-stroke? What size? I can't stand this little TT GP 42 I have in it. It is so noisy it sounds like it is going to come apart I think this plane would be very cool with a 4 stroke.....

Saito .56 and it has plenty of power. Probably gets close to 20 minutes on 8 oz of Omega 15%.
I would forget the knife edge problems as this is an excellent plane for rudder turns. The rudder is effective enough to help the plane tumble easily. However, if you do go to a larger rudder be sure and me know how it flies.....

This is the Kav I built for A club member last Oct. but it took A while to post up. On maiden it took ZERO trim and flies like A rocket, should be A great racer for our club events. We have A Kaviler class so it won't fly against any other types of planes. Powered by A TT Pro 46 and it came in at 5.4 pounds and still has A lot of places to drop the weight. I'm very impressed with the kit and the wood was second to none. I did have to remove some weight from the wing to get it to CG correctly without adding any weight. The cowl did have to be repainted with A better matching paint too.

I have a 2 stroke SK 50 ABC that needs a home and I am thinking the Kavalier is the right plance for it... any opinions/comments

In this plane it tended to be nose heavy and they always seem to have A fuel draw problem do to tank placement. I just used everything that the owner gave me for gear and he was nervious about weight so he gave me everything that was light as he could get and still work. I installed an 8oz tank and made it fit as high as I could in the bay, almost got it level with the carb but not quite. It worked though and no draw problems.
I like to assemble the plane in the bones and set it on the GP CG Machine then place the gear on the plane to see where I will want to place it. I make my own servo mounts and just use rails. I took some hole saws and drilled A nice pattern of holes in the LE sheeting from the fuse to the tip both top and bottom between the bays. I used A carbon fiber shaft for the push/pull control rod on the elevator plus it's short, the servo is in the aft section of the fuse and hatched. The 600 mAh battery is also back there. I made up my own pull/pull rudder system with 30 pound wire fish leader. It's very light and works great, I even use the system in 28% stunt planes, it's very strong.
There is more room to get it light too. Foam wheels and drill out the landing gear. You can also drill out A lot of wood in the fuse because this little plane is really over built and tough.
There is no lead weight in this plane at all. I also used A servo for each aileron.
Keep in mind it was built to race but I think there is A problem making them too light so I didn't do A lot except watch how I was building and didn't lean on the glue bottle too much.
If you want A great little stunt plane this is A good choice but I really like the Extras and Sukhois better, that's just me though, what the heck, I'm A Bipe lover anyway so what do I know??

I just noticed that the Kavalier looks an awful lot like the discontinued Sig Komandar... I'm still flying my Komandar, but it's 25 years old and getting pretty tired... With the exception of the main gear which on the Komandar were mounted on the wings, and the fact that the Komandar had a balsa over foam wing, they sure look very much alike... I may just have to order one for my winter project... Anybody else noticed this??? I know for a fact that there has been quite a bit of call for bringing back the Komandar, and I'm thinking that the Kavalier is an updated version...

It's an updated version from twenty five years ago too.

I had the Kommander. The kavalier has a shorter wingspan and lower aspect ratio. Generally speaking it is a sportier sport plane. The Kommander was a good secondary trainer but the higher aspect ratio lowered the roll rate a bit.

I just stumbled across this thread too while searching for Kavalier taildragger conversion info.
Like many of you, I too had a Kavalier as my 2nd plane way back when and have decided to build one again. I've been out of the hobby for maybe 12 years, but looking at a few winter build projects to get back in the saddle next Spring.
At any rate, I just started so I'm only half way through the Kavalier wing.

This really is an old post, I'm surprised there isn't somethng just a bit newer?? I built this one in 0-5 for A friend to fly in our club races. Outstanding build and A super plane to fly, bult like A balsa tank!!! Great first kit without any surprises. My friend wanted it to be covered so it matched the box, it was close. Sorry, I always give the blue prints/plans to the owner of the plane. You can get them from SIG if you can't find someone with A set.

Ah, well I think I'll be able to pull off what I'm tryin' to do without them.. I've got a set of plans, they are just missing a few parts..
Thinkin' about "reworking" the Kavalier down to 48" specifically for electric 25 power..

I just started a Kavalier that was given to me by the family of a club member that has passed. it is missing a few pieces including plans & instructions. I think I can get it built from the pictures all of you have submitted on here. I've built a fair amount of planes in the last 35 years so I think I can get this one done but the one thing I need is the measurements of the horizontal stabilizer. If one of you folks could get that for me I'd be grateful.

My Kav is all framed up ready to glass the fuse. It came out pretty darn good (no plans, no instructions). I'm confused about the balance point. I've seen from 3 1/4 back on the fuse to on the spar, BIG DIFFERENCE. Where is the correct point?

Got this link to calculate the balance point so I'm good to go. http://www.geistware.com/rcmodeling/cg_super_calc.htm
