Sig Somthin Extra - Finished and Flown !!
#1
I finished the SE a couple of weeks ago and I have flown it about 10 times...
Specs:
Engine - Ervine .53
Prop - 11.5 x 4
Weight - 5 pounds 4 Ounces
Mods:
Pull Pull Rudder
Pull Pull Elevator
Replace flying rods with wire
Sullivan tail wheel
Setup:
Low rate per manual
High rate per manual
Flaperons with elevator mixed in
CG - per manual
Results:
AWESOME
I love this plane.....
First flight was no problem for me with the low rates per the manual,
after a little trimming I flipped on high rates and this thing came to life!
I was able to go vertical as fast and as far as I wanted with authority!
Roll rate is really fast and it would do everything I know how to do
so far. I could flip tumble and throw this thing across the sky and always
feel in control.
I will post pics as soon as I get a chance.

Glad to hear that! I'm working on mine, and will put a Saito .72 up front. Am I going to get into trouble on the ground with a 12" or 13" prop?
Post pics when you can!

i had a somethin extra with a 70 magnum fourstroke the prop i had to swing was 12x8 that is the smallest prop magnum said i could use the pitch was way to much but kept the engine in its range with over revving sorry to say it didnt make it through the first flight with this engine the speed it got at 3/8 trottle off the pitch of the prop was more thasn it could handle it got a flutter and went in i had flown it several times with a 45 magnum pro on it it was a great flyer but if i was going to put a four stroke i would get a taller gear so i couyld run the biger less pitch prop that is just my opinion with the past experience, their a great plane that fly great i am know building another one out of coroplast hopefully it will fly just as good .

Advent,
I'd really love to see how you did the pull-pull on the rudder and elevator.
Did you have to move the servos?

I just switched the throttle and elevator servos and raised the elevator servo
up about 3/8" to clear the other servo's. I glued short 3" or 4" exit tubes
into the fus during constuction and ran all the wires prior to covering. Once
everything was in place I labeled the wires and removed them.
The rudder and elevator are rock solid with no slop at all. This is the first time
using pull pull, and I really like it. I used 60 pound test .021 dia. steel leader
purchased at BassPro shop, 100 feet was under $10.00 and sullivan 2/56 through
hole threaded rods with Dubro clevis's/clevie [:@] ??

Advent,
Man, that's really a clean setup. I just might have to try that on mine.
What did you use for the exit tubes? I can't really tell from the picture, but are there any problems with the wires cutting into the edges of the exit holes on the elevator?
*Very* nice job on the flag too.

I use a 13x6 on both my SE's with Saito 72s and there isn't much clearance, but not a lot is needed, even on landing as it lands so smoothly.

Well, I flew mine today for the first time and I must say - it flew as expected - very well. Very capable airplane - good slow speed characteristics and good aerobatic abilities but I have the CG in the recommended location and it just didn't want to snap very well. So...I think I need to move it back. We'll see - I'm not used to flying an airplane that is so neutral - I need to get used to that first.
The Magnum .61 with a 14x4W or a 13x6 APC prop gave me unlimited vertical.

I used small sections of the supplied pushrod tube... The wire going to
the top of the elevator looks like it has a sharp angle exiting the fus
in the picture, but it really is pretty straight. I dont think the wires
will cut anything, that nylon tubing is pretty strong, but time will tell.
Yea, the flag makes the rest of the covering look like #@$%.
It is the last time I do straight lines on a covering job, the flag was
a lot easier then it looks.
BTW...
The pilot is a kids meal figure from Wendy's - for the movie ELF I think

Yes, I used the stock landing gear and wheels per plan, however
I am running a 2 stroke.
With a Sullivan tail wheel the plane sits a little to low in the front.
I think a taller landing gear would look great.
