RCM plan # PL620 for 25.00 should work. I have an old pilot kit that I'm chicken to do anything but taxi with. Its the most beautiful model anyone could have.

Good luck:I know there was one hopefully that is it I thought was MAN but maybe RCM.I believe it was July 1975 issue.DOn't have the info here.Nice plane approx 60" foam wings built up fueslage.Weight was about 12 Lbs they had some problem as at that time were using a Merc 60? size engine in a 12 Lb Bipe. IF it is that one think you would be happy with it,but maybe try to check old MAN plan list too as I said it was back in 1975.

Hi;Would look into that Beech.I have it and think it is a real nice looking set-up.Mine is only half finished don't know when I will ever finish it!Plane was a little heavy for the engines in that era I believe they were using Merco 60?and if I remember it weighed in at about 12 Lbs.I still have the magazine too.Was 12/73 I think tells on the RCM site the year.Love those Stagger Wings just crashed a little 30" one with a 15 engine real fun plane.Couldn't believe how nice it flew.Snaky on the ground.Need to make new foam wings for it to many years of crashes they finally can't be repaired any more.Had lot more fun with that than my big planes!!There may be anothere post from me to you sorry if that happens posted earlier but no sign of it now so just did it again!

Marutaka makes a kit... I don't know anything about it, but I think it used to be known as Royal... It also appears to no longer be available, but maybe you can find a kit via a wanted posting here on RCU...

The only plans I've seen so far are from RCM. I too would be interested in building this beautiful bird. I've thought of ordering the plans from RCM ($25) but I've already got two projects on my bench. The beech may have to wait until next winter...
If anyone finds a kit or another set of plans besides the ones at RCM--I'd be very interested.

PrecisionCutKits.com has a kit. Seems kind of pricey at about $350-375, though, especially since I don't have any information on the quality of the kit or the performance of the finished bird. Leaning toward the RCM plans, but I've never done anything with foam wings before.

Hi;Don't know to much about the foam thing but thought it was kind of neat system.Has the front sheeted like a buiilt up wing then cap strips run back to the rear sheeting.Wing looks like a regular built up wing.

When the RCM plan was first published a .60 was the big engine. Now there are all kinds of choices so don't worry about the weight. Larger engines can even be used for balance purposes. SO when you get that far then you can decide what you need for an engine. Foam cutting is not rocket science. Just get a 12 volt battery, about 3 feet of ni-chrome wire make a bow of some kind to keep it tight, do a little research and practice a little. It won't be too hard. Good luck

Well, I am going to try the PCK staggerwing. I will let you know how it turns out. I was looking for a 1/4 scale but this will do for a start. It is a little expensive but hopefully "you get what you pay for".

I'd love to hear from you when you get the kit. I'd like to believe it's worth the price, but I guess I'm too big a coward to drop that much money without having feedback from other sources. I bought the RCM plans for $25, but I'd be willing to chalk it up to experience if there was a good kit out there. The Staggerwing is such a classic, you'd think you could find a good kit relatively easily.

Tex,
Good luck. The stagger is so neat it is almost worth any frustration to have one. Just take your time and you'll learn alot and have a beautiful plane after you're done.

I have a set of Robert Sweizter plans for the D17S 64" wingspan 1/6 scale. Very nice detailed plans. I haven't started it yet but I plan on a 1.20 4c in mine.
You can still get them by contacting Fred Kovack.
http://www.vintagercplans.com/order.htm
He has taken over Robert Sweizter and Sid Morgan Vintage plans.
A guy here named Vic has the same plans and had his kit cut at Kitcutters. Check the pics.
http://www.kitcutters.com/Mor/MorStaggerwing.htm
They have the kit for $270 and comes with the plans.
These look like the same ones from PrecisionCutKits.
I also have a set of 1/4 scale D17S plans by Owen Morris.
What ever happened to Nick Ziroli's D17S he was doing?

There's also http://www.ironbaymodelcompany.com/
They make the old Byron Original kits and there is a D17 on their web pages. No information. Probably pricy ($900 maybe?) looking at the other kits, but probably a "complete" kit as well. If it's anything like the one I saw in Perry over the weekend it's very nice with composite fuse and scale retracts.

Steve,
As far as I know the one at Ironbay is not available. I haven't heard anything on it in a long time since they took over Byrons. It would be 1/5 scale with a 77" wingspan.

I have been collecting information on Staggerwing kits for quite some time. I am also building the 64 inch model from Robert Sweitzer Plans sold by Vintage RC Plans. I am pretty sure that the PCK kit is cut from the same plans. My kit was cut by Kitcutters. Although they did an excellent job without the use of laser tools, there is no comparison to the accuracy of laser cut kits. This kit and all other Staggerwing kits in this size are EXPERT level kits and require a lot of building experience and imagination.
I have also purchased a Marutaka Staggerwing Kit. It is a 56 inch wing span model. Marutaka bought the rights to build and sell the old Royal kits. Both companies no longer manufacture this kit. Hobby barn use to sell the kits here in the US, but they are all sold out. You may find one that someone has stashed away but they are no longer in production. These kits sold for about $170.00 but now sell for $200.00 plus. If you check ebay, you will find one occasionally (currently one for sale at $225.00).
I have a number of photos of Staggerwing models in the photo gallery on my web site at http://iflyrc.hypermart.net . You can also go to the forum a follow the progress of my Sweitzer Staggerwing project. If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to leave a message on my forum.
I also have extracted the text from the RCM article on their model built from RCM plan 620. The article describes the construction and flying of the 64 inch span model. The article was posted in the December 1975 issue of the RCM magazine (not availble from RCM). Drop by my web site and leave me a message and I will give you a link to the file.

Vic I hope you don't mind I used pics of your build above. No one else has these great shots.
You got a good deal on your cutting at Kitcutters. They want $270.oo now and the plans are extra at $45.oo. That makes that kit abit expensive now.
BTW thanks for the article.

I don't mind you using my photos - just don't sell them (smiles). I hope others find them useful in building their staggerwings as I have had no photos or diagrams of the construction to help me.
I was certain that I got a great deal at the price I paid for getting the kit cut by Kitcutters (they are a different outfit - not Precission Kit Cutters).

Don't worry I don't sell any pics. They are for my own reference.
Yes I know Presicion does laser cutting and Kitcutters is hand cut.
When I was checking Kitcutters site when you were having your kit cut, the price you got was the same as the results from the calulator on their webage. Maybe I should have got one cut then too.
The price of balsa is not cheap so it didn't seem like they would have made any money on cutting your kit and they may have realized that when they added the Staggerwing to the line up they offer.
One of these days I have to get back to mine and get the templates done. One thing on plans is that the parts drawn are never accurate so you end up redoing parts before they are right. Once it's good then templates can be made so you can make as many parts as you want and they are just as good a laser cut because they are all hand cut or router cut. A router CNC would be nice. One day I plane to get one.
