Welcome Back VJ,
The Cub will be fine. We have to remember these are toys. Working in the shop will help keep you mind off of things.
Later!!

Okay, I've got to ask, what size prop did you have?  What kind of RPM's were you getting?  Uh... what else...  Darn it!  I didn't want to have to change my engine out!  Any idea what you're going to, maybe a DLE30?

Ah, that'll do for now.

Take care,
David

sorry to hear about the maiden VJ... not sure what happened in other events for you. take care.
i'm surprised that 20 wouldn't work. i've seen a 20 fly on another plane we have at our field and i swear that thing has plenty of power and would fly a cub easily.

glad you are back making balsa dust again. i'm thinking of doing the same this winter just because i can and really it is one cheap form of entertainment.

VJ, Eddie here in OKC, OK. I have the same Hanger 9 J-3 Cub. I run the DLE 20 in mine. It has plenty of power and using a Zoar 16/8 prop. I know some of us are using a 17/6 Zoar also. Mine balances latteraly pretty well also.
I fly mine about 1/2 throttle most of the time unless for a loop or etc. Mine weighs about 16 1/2 #'s without fuel.
I wish you the best and get on here with us and visit. It is soothing.

Thanks,
Eddie

David, I was using a 17x8 Vess prop. I didn't check the RPM with a tach, but by ear it was running well and didn't detect anything abnormal. Since I had to add a full pound of lead to the nose, my choice of engines will take into consideration weight so I can reduce the amount of lead in the front. If I were starting from scratch my engine of choice would have been the DLE30.

Well, I'm glad to here that the 20 is working in those Cubs!  Whew, I didn't and still don't have the money now to buy a 26 or 30!  I'm sticking with my DLE20 until I see what it does.

VJ, I'm convinced there has to be something amiss with your DLE20.  I wonder what could cause low power output from that engine.  By the way, this is my first gasser, I'm a novice at this.

Take care,
David

A Friend of mine put a DLE30 in his Cub and it was way over powered..It tore the firewall out after 3 flights It was a ARF Cub and he was really ripping it around...I think the DLE 20 would be fine..I have one in a Seagull spacewalker 120 and it has lots of power...I have aOS max FS 125 in my Sig 1/4 Cub and it has pretty good perfermance...I am building a BUSA 1/4 Cub and I am going to try a OS Gemini 160 Twin...I think It will probably have about the same power as my Os fs125 I am hoping for a tiny bit more for float use...I think the 125 would be enough anyway but I havent tried it on floats yet...Has anybody else tried their Cub with the OS 125 FS on floats?</p>

guys I know we are talking about a 1/4 Cub, but not all Cub's are built nor fly alike. I have a 1/4 scale Sig cub that weighs in around 19 pounds with a G38 on it. Yes I built it back many years ago and built it like a rock plus a lot of scale details. I also have a hanger 9 cub straight from the box with a G26 on the front and it is around 15 pounds. Yes both are almost the same outline as in shape, but the extra weight makes a big difference. Lets say you take two Balsa USA cubs, one scale out to the T and it is 19 pounds, next take the same plane with no details and it is 15 pounds. I would bet you a 20 would fly the 15 pound cub but would be a handful on the 19 pound cub.

Would you say that the 19 pound Cub would fly very scale like on a 20? Just curious.

Yes it would fly slower according to the prop you are running, but if you were to need some power to get out of something, i dont think you would have it. I would say that setup would need full power to take off and climb out just to get it in the air. Now take taht plane at 15 pounds and it would be a different story

My 1/4 Cub came out at just under 15lbs even with all the details I put in it. Just try to keep it light and look for ways to remove weight before covering. I did not have to add any weight to my plane for balance either.
Later!!

Well, I didn't want to change it out, but your the second person to tell me that and I trust both of your judgements.  Robert was the other.  There goes another chunck of money!  [:@]  Thanks Charles!

CubMan...

I've finished my 1/4 SIG Cub and was looking for some bungee covers. You have those listed on your site so I was wondering if they are still available. I sent an e-mail request a couple of weeks ago but didn't hear back. Is the e-mail listed on your site still a good one?

Rick...

Sorry Rick, I did not see your email. I do have 4 sets ready to go. I did have them on RCU in an add but they shut me down for not running them as a business although they are others doing the same thing. Shoot me a email and I will get you a set. $10 shipped. Cub flyer, the tubing I used for the rings around the instruments I can no longer find. So I will still be able to make but just not with the rings.

Oooo, sounds like a discount! NOT REALLY! Hey, let me shoot you an email with what I have just to make sure I'm getting a better fit. Mine just looks too wide to me, plus when I trim it down to size the outside instruments will be right on the edge of the panel. I'll get that to you this morning hopefully. Thanks Charles!

Take care,
David

That sounds good.  I'm having trouble locating the photos I took.  You've got my email address right?
