You don't have two left wings do ya?
Every kit gets some type of screw up.. Mine was smashing it into the desert causing a rebuild!

If I heard it once I heard it a thousand time's, "Measure twice cut once". Of course with my teacher if you did it backwards and messed up, pretty good chance there was a knot a growing on the back of the head. So I learned to measure three time's.
HA! I was thinking the same thing. Only I measure three or four times and STILL cut more than once!

Yes, I have had a few "oh ****s" along the way, like misplacing the top aileron leading edge and having to redo it.  Oh yeah, I finally got my flooring done, now I have to go to Arizona for 3 weeks and no room to take a plane, but I will take my Blade Heli and practice some more.  In January, I can get back on it.

I did measure several times before making the cut. I think my fault was that I measured and cut with the TE/aileron pointing toward me but on the board the plan I looked at was the opposite orientation with the TE/aileron pointing away from me. Oh well. I've cut the riblets and they're now clamped and the glue is drying. I'll add the strip of sheeting back in the am and I'll be back to square one. This time I'll measure thrice and make sure I have correct orientation from the plan vs. the wing in front of me.

And I did check and I do have one left and one right wing. You had me thinking for a second about that one.

I got the wing/aileron fixed. Last night I was able to get the aileron cut out ( correctly this time ) and completed minus hinging. On to the other wing.

Pic 1: subrib glued across the improper cut
Pic 2: new strip of sheeting in place on top
Pic 3: wing done with aileron cut out and completed.

Well, I was really hoping to get started covering mine.  Things are coming together finally, but work has gone into overtime!  11 hour days, 6 days a week doesn't leave much time for the Cub but I'm not complaining one bit!  I need it!

When I do get around to covering, I figure I'll be starting on the wings before doing the fuse and then the smaller parts.  Would those that have done this before agree (which I assume would be all of you)?  I'm using Solartex but it sounds like some Stix It may be in order around the tail, particularly the fin to keep the covering stuck down.  I'll need to pick up a can of that before I get there.  Anything else I may need?

The project we are working on is suppose to be complete by the end of next week so I may be able to start the week following Christmas if all goes well.

Take care!

Hello gents,
Sorry to read of your troubles Neddy but glad to see it's patched up. That's a timely notice too, I'll have to watch that cut myself.

I have been working on the cub in snippets, minutes or even an hour or two whenever I can. I have been taking pics as I go but haven't taken the time to download them and do the write up. We're on OT status as well and while the money is good, time is at a premium.

Not sure where my last report left you... The fuse is done up to the point of making the firewall and the rest of the nose. The horizontal and vertical stab's are done, sanded and the hinge slots cut. I work on an old drafter's table so I built both wings in-line at the same time which worked out well. I'm adding the strut mounts to the wings tonight and hope to have the tips done this weekend. So far it has all been done stock per plans. The only deviation is the wing tube and joining of the wings. Recall my kit was supposed to be the 105" span split wing.

Thanks to some hints from Robert I made a wing tube by rolling resin soaked paper around an AL tube that had a single layer of wax paper on it. Robert used Partall when making his but I didn't have that. My son and I stacked and drilled the W1, W2 and most of the W3 ribs on the drill press. Later I ended up only needing one W3 on each side after reducing the span. I changed the wing joiner bolt to 10-32 nylon instead of 6-32 and added another finger hole and 10-32 nylon bolt at the rear. When it was time to join the wings I set everything flat and square with zero dihedral and glued the wing tube into place.

We're busting tail now to get a package of drawings out next week then I have the week off between xmas and New years so I hope to get a ton of work done then. Maybe I'll even post a picture.

I got the 2nd wing aileron cut out and completed. Everything went smoothly with this one . Now the part that I've been dreading more than cutting them out - hinging them. Ugg. Now, to the basement to find some scrap to try to make a jig out of.

Nice work Neddy, don't sweat the hinges, think it through then exectue. You'll be fine...we've all been there.

Just spent 2 hours making a wooden jig ( 2 actually) to make the hole for the wing side of the Robart hinge pin. Making the wooden part was easy - I just couldn't for the life of me get a hole drilled in the right place.

Here are the photos of my drill guides.

To get the hole perfectly where I wanted it I clamped the guide to the fence on my drill press and used the line on the side of the guide to align the bit.

The goal of the guides is to drill the hinge hole for the ailerons perfectly centered on the edge of the wing and the aileron, making the hinge pivot point centered on the edge when the hinge is installed.

Here are a few more photos of the aileron guides, wing side and aileron side, and a photo of how the were drilled on my drill press.

Neddy, hope this helps.

Nice wood work on the Jigs SDP!  Having the right kind of equipment to build those sure would help!

WOW! I have the exact same block's. But I put a piece of brass tubing inside just to keep from wallering out the balsa.

Ah yes!  The ol' brass tube through the hole trick!  Very good Ace!  I was wondering about that.

Do you use the guides from the supplied Robart drill jigs?

David,
I have those Robart hinge guides and, yes, if the holes are in a position such as the Cubs rudder an elevator I will use them.

I got my jigs made tonight. This time everything looks good this time. My first hole drilling trial with some scrap looked good. I'm going to make another mockup of the wing/ailerons tomorrow to drill holes again just to double check that everything fits well, is in good position and allows free/full movement of the aileron.

I had the same problem with the "spider cracks", especially around the screw holes. I talked to the guys at SIG and they suggested a technique that should prevent the cracks. Find a piece of ducting of some sort with a diameter of about the width of the fuselage at that point. Wrap a new piece of windshield plastic around the form (before it's cut) and gently heat it with a heat gun. The process needs to be slow and uniform with the heat to make the material take the form. I've tried warping this stuff before without a form and it didn't come out too well. I recently received a new piece for the windshield and will give this technique a try. I suppose it's pretty presumptive of me to offer this advice before I've actually tried it myself. <G>

Well, the ailerons were "fun". They took more thought and longer than I'd anticipated but I got them finished up today. I will say that I learned quite a bit that will make future builds much easier. Now I just have to install the servos on the hatches and cut slots for the servo arms and the wings will be complete.

Looking good Neddy!  Congrats!

How are you hooking up your ailerons?  I did mine per the plans.  It was a little work and thought but it worked!

I'll post some more picks of my cabin later today or tonight.  Got just a little more done.  Getting closer and closer!

Take care,
David

I made an aluminum control horn from K&S 0.64 alum sheet. I just looked at the side view of the wing and traced the control horn + the aileron rib then transferred it to the alum sheet and cut it out. I sandwiched it in between 2 lite ply riblets with epoxy.

I see some are playing with the idea of moving control stick. This is cool I did it on my L-4 it is great to see the stick moving around in the plane. But one small word of caution. Keep an eye on it. I was using a small Hitec servo to move the sticks left and right. all was good, came in from a flight and open the door and window and could smell something hot, something electronic hot. After taking the plane apart and checking all the electronics I cam across the following take a look
