RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
The spray booth is complete. I even managed to make it OSHA compliant with regard to air flow velocity... over 100 ft/min cross-flow. Here are a few pics.

Fantasric effort on the paint booth. I wish I had the time, money and space to embark on such a project! Kudos...
Mine is a much more humble endeavor but I like what''s developing just the same.
I''ve yet to paint the cowling or pants but that''s next up.
Here''s where she is to date:

PM,
Your Super Stinker is looking really good. It won''t be long now!
Thanks for your comments on my paint booth. I''m investing time on the paint booth now for future projects such as F8F, Mystery Ship, P26...

RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
I've not been investing much time on the Pitts but I have managed a few odd and ends...
I was really impressed with several of the static models at Toledo this year. One of the things that really left a favorable impression were the polished landing gear legs on several of the bipes...
Naturally, I had to try my hand at this as well. While not the mirror or show-quality of what I saw, my very 1st attempt didn't turn out too badly.
Take a look:

PM,
Those legs look hot ....err... I mean your landing gear legs. Can you share your technique? I've been busy fishing and haven't made any progress on the Pitts in a while.

RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
LOL...Sure I can tell you what I've done.
I started out with 320 grit wet/dry, soaked in water and took as much surface detail off as possible. The aluminum on these two were scored pretty deeply. I kept the paper very wet as I sanded in circular fashion. I actually had to drop down to 220 grit to get some pitting as smooth as I could. Trouble is, 220 leaves as many scratches as the original finish, lol. These had to be worked out with more 320, followed up with 400, 600 and finally 1500 grit. I wiped each leg dry between differing grits, checking for scoring or anything I might have missed on the last pass.
Once I was satisfied, (actually, when my shoulder hurt to the point I couldn't stand it any more), I applied my 1st coat of Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish. I worked this in with my finger until the paste turned black. I then used a clean terry cloth towel and buffed. The buffing is where the shine comes from, not the application of the polish. It took 8 applications and subsequent buffings to get just under a mirror-like reflection. I applied 2 more coats, and used my auto buffer with a sheepskin bonnet to get the final finish. I then used a good carnuba paste wax to protect the shine.
That's all it took. Total time invested for both legs: 1 hour.
Thanks for askin'!

RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
Nice Job! I've been using Nevr-Dull for years for my landing gear - and alot of other things around the house. I even use it to polish up my glass filled nylon props after balancing. After I scrap off the "heavy" material, I go through the sandpaper process and finish them off with nevr-dull. Not sure if they cut through the air any better, but they look good!

RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
Happy Memorial Day...
Well, our field is pretty much swampland so it'll be awhile before I maiden the
Pitts.
I've yet to install the smoke system so it's probably just as well, lol.
Here she is prior to installing the aileron servos. I'm using a JR Matchbox to synch the 4 digitals together.

RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
PM,
How is the SS doing? Did the maiden flight go well? How does she fly with the G23?
I have not made any progress on my SS this summer. Most of my free time has been spent fishing. However, I'm starting to work on the SS again as the fishng is starting to slow down.

RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
Believe it or not, tomorrow MAY be the maiden! I had issues with the engine(starting) but once I understood how to set it up,(thanks to the guys here on RCU), it kicked right over.
Today, I'm going over all nuts and bolts with Loc-Tite and charging the batteries. Hopefully the winds from Hanna will have abated and I can get her in the air.
In truth, I've been messing with my Global Wacky Waco. She finally maidened(for real) and it flies superbly on an SK 80 2-stroke using 10% Cool Power. For a profile bipe, it sure looks good in the air!
Hope you get back to yours...after all the effort you've invested so far, the fish can wait, lol...

PM,
Yea you are right about the fish waiting... it seem they have been waiting alot lately. The WW looks like a fun little plane. By the way, good luck with the SS maiden flight.
Well, time to put away the fishing lures and get the covering material and iron out!

RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
Ok, here we go...
The SS maiden flight was today. She was tail heavy a tad and underpowered. The Zenoah G23 was just enough to break ground, struggle for altitude and land.
If I hadn't had a decent prop, she would have stuck to the earth like an Emu.
Anyway, the Zenoah is off her nose and a US Engines 41cc is being bolted back on. Several mods need to be completed as the carby is on the opposite side and my fuel line will need reworking.
However, none of these are too problematic and hopefully, next week will be "take-2".
Here's the proof:

Wow,
I've been there before... not fun. However, it sounds like you are in good shape for another day. The US41 should cure both problems in one shot.

RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
I made a little more progress this weekend. Since I'm using the Stits fabric and paint process, it takes more time to finish. However, I did finish covering all the flying surfaces and both wings. Hopefully I finish covering the fuse this week and start the finishing process next weekend. I'll take pictures when I'm finished with the primer step.

RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
Sunday saw the SS in the air once more. This time with the US Engines 41cc hauling it along.
Brand new engine not broken in but with anough torque to get it off the ground in short order. Ran it a tad rich, gas mixed with 100:1 AMSOIL Sabre 2-stroke oil.
The spring starter wouldn't so we used a monster starter a buddy uses on his G-62's...
Once the engine has a coupla gallons run thru it, I'm confident that flip starting will not be an issue.
The 41 is a pound heavier so balance worked out perfectly! I used a wooden 20x8 Master Airscrew prop but have 2-APC's ordered, a 18x10 and another 20x8. We'll see a marked improvement using these props versus the wooden one.
Sorry, no camera at the field Sunday so you'll just have to take my word on it, LOL...
Post some pix of your covering job!

PointMagu, It sounds like you found the right engine for your SS. Please let me know how she handles.
Not much to look at now. Here she is in the "nude"

I was wondering if any one could tell me the control throws for the super stinker. My dad was given the plane and we don't have any of that info.

RE: Midwest Super Stinker revisited.
Awesome job so far. Can't wait to see her all done.
I solo'd mine yesterday. The maiden was done by our club pres but he wasn't there yesterday so I decided it was time, lol.
The 1st flight was great...the 2nd flight was even better until it came time to land, (in a crosswind). Gee, these gassers fly a lot different than 60-sized glow jobs!
