I already warned everyone that you would be hearing from me as I endeavor to put together my first kit and so I will jump into today's dilemna of my soon to be built 4* 60.
I knew that the engine mounting (getting settings straight before placing fuel tank, throttle wire and setting firewall) would be critical and so I enlisted help from an experienced plane builder to help me out with this. I should point out I have the OS 65LA.
He did a great job and made it look easy. Of course, with this done I could continue building and permenantly place the firewall and other permenant items which I did. The only problem is the engine settings were done so that they are placed to low on the plane and the muffler can't connect with the engine.
The schematics shown a different engine and I believe this caused the confusion.
I figure I have three options:
1. Consider it a loss and go by the ARF version.
2. Modify the engine wall (cut part of it out to allow the connection to work).
3. Use spacers / washers to raise the engine. Even though the maximum I could use would not give enough height and so other ways would still need to be found.
Other than the first option I think any fix I attempt will comprise stability and engine/plane performance and I am sure, being a newcomber to rc and this my first kit, there are other issues out there that I am not aware of that will surface from this.
Not sure if anyone has ran into this kind of problem.
Thanks

I don't think that the engine is too low, just cut the fuse side so that the muffler fitts.
I Had a 4*forty and had to do this.
The plane will fly fine.

Alot of times the fuselage sides, in this case the cheeks forward of the firewall need to be trimmed/adjusted on the side of the muffler for clearance. The easiest way is take a dremel and just grind it accodingly for good clearance. Just make sure the thrustlines are within what the plan calls for, then trim the rest for good fit.
Most of the time you won't ever notice after the engine/muffler is installed. Good luck.
