Default Can this be corrected??

I noticed after "remeasuring again" a difference of 5/8" distance ( longer ) from the right elevator to the main wing. Since the elevators ( independant ) and the vertical stab are epoxyed in place I dont know how, if at all , to correct. I see only 3 options .

Please advise.

SeaGull Super Decathlon 40 w/.91Saito

1. try to remove the glued in tail section and reinstall

2. off set the main wing slightly to make both wing tips equal in distance from each other.

3. leave it as is and hope it tracks ok ( the control surfaces of the elevators , typical Decath, lots of surface area )

Anyone corrected a mistake like this before? Please give me a builders recommendation.

Thanks!! Bill

Murphy at work... :-). Had it been a pattern aircraft I would have suggested that you try alternative 1. For a Decathlon alternative 3 seems to be the simplest solution as I don't think the misalignment will have a significant impact on the flying qualities of your aircraft.

For sport/fun flying it won't matter...

Choose Door #3 - Also, I'll bet that glitch won't occur again!

Cheers!

The epoxied section can be removed by using a heat gun to melt the glue. apply the heat directly to the glue joint on both side of the fuse, be patient and work slowly. if you work the heat slowly you'll be able to tell when the glue is softening, and the part can be removed with no damage. clean all of the epoxy from both parts.

While the Decathlon is not a Pattern Plane, it is nonetheless a very touchy aerobatic plane.

I say fly it first, if you find that it creates problems (Like cork-screwing through loops) then try to remove and replace it

Do it correct by removing it and reglueing in proper location. REASON- someone will notice it at the field and then the YA-Ya's start in about lousy building methods. sure it will fly OK as is BUT??? dick

i don't think that it would make much of a difference in the flying qualities, and that door 3 would be the best choice in this situation.....at least for now...

well, whatever you choose!!

Hate to admit it but. I did this once also. Heat the glue with a heat gun and remove it. Then reglue it properly. Then you know it will fly right,Look right, and everyone at the field will like it. AND YOU will feel much better knowing it is right. That will beat the heck out of trying to explane what happend and some of the other flyers laughing at it.
