I just went to the store to buy a Christmas present for my father in law and they did not have the kit I wanted, they only had a Kadet LT40 and I was wondering if anybody knows much about this kit ? If my plan works I have just addicted another poor unsuspecting sucker in our hobby. *snicker*

I like the OS 46 FX,GMS 47,TT46,Tiger Shark 46,in that order, thats not to say there aren't as good or better engines or sizes, just my .02's.Also the LT 40 is a very good plane to build and fly.

You're lucky they didn't have what you wanted. The lt-40 is an excellent trainer, and is VERY forgiving, provided you have enough height. I have a Magnum .46 in mine, and I rarely run it full throttle. In fact, I rarely empty half a tank before I'm ready to come down.
I built most of mine in about 2 weeks, and that was slow, meticulous work. Make sure he covers the wing in bold colors, and the top color is very different than the bottom. This will aid in his spatial recognition.

I have finished my Sig LT 40. Was my first kit of that size, a lot of fun. The only problem I encountered was a warped trailing edge. I didn't notice it until I had built that side. I tried to straighten it with water and ammonia which worked for a while but returned to its original shape. When it went to cover it. Tell him to check the wood before he puts it together.
I have a OS .46fx on mine.

OS 46 FX is too much power for a trainer. A OS 46 LA is perfect. Remember, this does not need to be an aerobatic ship. just a smooth easy flier.
PS: EXCELLENT choice on the Kadet LT-40. What model were you thinking of getting?

Hi Ron,the LT40 is eaiser to build, but I think the PT has more recovery in flight to keep the pilot out of trouble,as I have built, flown and trained students on both I find it hard to pick one over the other, let us know your preference when you and your Dad are both flying.

The OS 46FX is the perfect engine for this plane. I put the LT40 I trained on together in just a few weekends and I'd never built anything like this.
And the 46fx will help if you ever have to fly in wind and it'll also move nicely to other planes. If it's too much power, then use the throttle....

I've flown my LT40 with both an LA46 and an FX46. The FX made a world of difference... our field is surrounded by trees (or perhaps more correctly TREEEEES!). After take off, you have to make an immediate climbing turn to get away from them. The take-offs with the LA were a little more "exciting" than they needed to be. If your father-in-law is going to be flying at a field that allows for more leisurely climb outs, then the LA will probably do. Just a hint though, even the FX won't save your airplane if you wait too long to go around on a poor approach and try to go vertical in front of the trees! Oh yeah, the LT40 rebuilds quite nicely!
If you look at the attached picture, you can just make out the runway under the shadows of the trees in the centre of the picture.

I went ahead and got the .46 LA for cost considerations since my father in law's airport will be unencumbered by nearby hazards. I spent the evening installing the radio on my PT60 and now have to leave my home area for Christmas so the 1st flight will have to wait but I will follow up with a progress report John, and once my father in law is ready report the differences in the two planes.

Sorry guys, I don't know. I pulled it off our club website. The only info about them is that they were taken by a small camera mounted in an rc plane.... That was long before I joined... I suppose I could ask some of the older, pardon me, more experienced members and see if they know....
