Default 4*40 95% completed...

Gentlemen,

Here we go, after countless enjoyable hours, here is some of the finished product of my 4*40... my daughter and son in the pics and the bald dude is me

This is my 2nd build.

I added a few mods. duel airelon servo, and a sullivan tail wheel.

I hope for a maiden voyage this week. I plan on breaking in the engine (.46 AX) tomorrow and finishing up the obvious trimming. I am too much of a newb to try to fly it myself, I will let a pro check it out and put it in the air

I will let you know how it goes.

Matt.

Really looks good. I made those same mods to mine when i built her. One thing you might want to try later is cutting one bay off of each wing. That really brings the model to life. Right now I have the covering torn off mine and I'm working on extending all the surfaces 1/2", adding a cowl I think and will recover in a duke of hazzard scheme.

It is one of the best planes around. It will soon be your favorite plane. Good Luck, Dave

Nice Job. I will one day finish my 4*60, Your canopy is cut the same as mine. I personally did not like the high large canopy. Enjoy your toy...

Thanks guys,

I broke in the engine today (.46 AX), things went smoothly. I feel I need to adjust the flexible metal push rod for the throttle, I feel I am not getting consistent carburetor openings after moving the throttle around. I purchased a 9CAPS and the radio has been amazingly nifty. I set the Throttle Idle and Throttle Kill and still need to set the dual ailerons.

Other than that, I see a maiden voyage in the next 7 days. Maybe tomorrow, weather permitting. I will take pics of the event.

Good show Matt. I really like the checkerboard control surfaces. The small tinted canopy is a nice touch also. If your set-up is as good as your build job, the maiden will be smooth as silk.

congrats and great job........i built the 4*60 kit as a first kit and second plane.....another flyer took her up and trimmed her, handed the control to me and i've had a blast since then.....stable in the air, tracks like it's on rails, just a fun relaxing plane to fly. with the throws turned up it'll do it's fair share of maneuvers but i've heard the 4* series doesn't like to come out of a flat spin so i haven't tried that one yet.

the only issue (could be good or bad depending on your field) is the plane has such low wing loadings that they love to float, they float forever. almost, if not as much as a trainer. make sure you have plenty of room to bleed of airspeed.

Really looks good. I made those same mods to mine when i built her. One thing you might want to try later is cutting one bay off of each wing. That really brings the model to life
i've read some on this in the past and everyone thinks the same. i don't know since i've not had to do any covering to the wing. i've read that people do this for increased roll rates and to cut down on the "float" the plane has.

whatever you decide to do you'll love this plane. i still take mine for those times i don't feel like being on my toes with a warbird or 300E.

Update....

Well, it has been awhile since I completed the 4*40. Work, family, new job, other events in life stopped me from getting out to the field.

I FINALLY got to maiden voyage her today in Ohio's December yet early spring like weather

My heart was pounding, I had to bend my knees, take deep-breaths, my hands/fingers felt like they were shaking. I taxi'd it around to feel out the rear wheel control. After a long straight taxi I gave her some up elevator and whamo, she was airborne. I thought my heart was pounding aggressively when I was taxing!!! She was very smooth . All I could say was.. WOW, I barely had to add any trim anywhere. I will say, she is definitely a floater. I had to come in low and as slow as possible to get her down. I will have to work to reduce the RPM idle speed so my approaches can be a bit shorter. Thanks to the guys who were there to keep my psychological confidence in gear! Doug.. Bill..

Now, to my next project. Not sure what to start with next, 4*60? Venture60? Chipmunk? any suggestions for a third plane. My medium goal thus far is to enter an IMAC.

Thanks for any input,

Matt

Matt: For a guy with "no hair" you did a terrific job. I'm glad to hear you ac'ed the maiden.

I really like you trim scheme. Are the stars and related stipes on the wing a design of your
own, or is that decals that come with the kit?

It really looks nice! I am currently finished a 4*40 twin. Picture of basic airframe included.

I am going to paint it yellow and I like your trim. The plane will be powered with 2 Evolution
46"s running 10 x 6. The wingspan will be roughly 86". I am going to order two cowlings from
fiberglass Specialities. They have quoted me a price. I think the cowlings will dress it up
quite a bit.

Again, great job, nice plane.

Jim

Haha,

Yes, no hair!

They were the decals with the kit, I think that scheme is fairly common with most 4*'s.

Your project looks nifty, pls post more pics as you progress.

I like the twin idea. I've been thinking about modifying a 4* into a bipe or a twin.
