I am using Rit for my 4*40 canopy. How long should it take? I am using 2 black and 1 navy blue, in 3 gallons of +- 75 deg. water. I want it pretty dark.
Thanks!

Elwood,
you need the water a little hotter up to 170 degrees (max) and stable temp. you can probably get away a little less temp 120 - 150. it doesn't take long ...keep pulling it out and check by rinsing with clear water.2 to 3 min between checks.
good luck.

Actually, you need to 'turn it up a notch'. Here's what I've done.
Water temp should be around 110 - 130 degree's. Dip the canopy in the slurry about 1 minute, rinse with cold tap water, and check for darkness. Repeat until it's to your liking.
Anyone do something different?

Elwood Ive used the Ritt method a couple times.Last one was a4* 120 canopy.
This is a large canopy, so what I did was use an old army alum. kettle to boil the water, well not quite boil, that will melt the plastic . I didnt want to stain the inside of this pot, so, I got an old Igloo cooler I didnt worry about mine, but, you can use a large garbage bag inside to keep it from staining. I used black and blue also, anyhow I just poured the hot water into the cooler wwith the dye then set the canopy inside, closed the top to hold heat and checked it 3 hrs later, ended up leaving it all night and 1/2 the next day and its still not real dark.
I also tinted a Something extra canopy a couple years ago and it didnt turn out nearly as dark as Id like.
Some types of plastic take the dye better than others Im told, however, I personaly am done with Ritt.
Im thinking of using a spray product next time.

I do it the same way Kevlar does. Except I just use hot tap water, as hot as it comes out of the faucet. I check it every few minutes until it's as dark as I want it. I once forgot and left a US 60 canopy in all night. You couldn't see through it unless you held it up to the light. I think I was using black dye....

About 5 days ago I attempted this for the first time on my GP extra 300S 60 size. Here's what I did.
Purchased 1 Black Rit Dye and 1 Navy Blue
Filled a 5 Gallon bucket with about 3 1/2 to 4 gallons of tap water as hot as it would come out of the tap.
Put both bags in
Added a couple cups of salt
Mixed 30 secons to 1 minute
Submerged My canopy
I frequently checked it, just pulled it out and looked at it if it was to light I put it back in. After about 15 to 20 minutes I achieved these results.
Good Luck.

I basically use the same method as Kevar, only I test the temperature of the water then dye a piece of scrap from the canopy, some plastic will curl and get brittle with to much heat.

Well, it has been a day and a half, and it is barely dark after I rinse off the dye. I am going to let it dry and try another dip to see if that works.

, like MinnFlyer said, some can-of-pees just won't take to changing their color
