B-18 Bolo from a Top Flite DC-3 kit?
#1
I've always liked the Douglas B-18 "Bolo" bomber but nobody seems to offer a kit, or even plans, for one. Since the real B-18 was based on the Douglas DC-3 airframe, I'm wondering if the Top Flite DC-3 kit would be a good starting point? The wings and tailfeathers are similar between the two planes but the fat-bellied fuselage of the Bolo would be almost a complete new build with little of the Top Flight fuselage being usable. Anybody know if an article has been published doing this?

Boy, you picked a tough one. My quick search shows that you are correct, no plans or kits. I really don't think a DC-3 kit would be much help. The tail looks DC-3 but it was actually from the DC-2 which is a little different. There is a guy here in the forums that will design plans from 3 views for so much an inch of span. He delivers CAD plans that can be cut buy the lazer cutters. You might enquire here to see if someone can set you up with his contact info.
And no, I can't remember ever seeing anything on the Bolo in any of the RC periodicals. I don't thnik the bolo is "Sexy" enough for most of them to bother with. It sounds like an interesting project, let us know how it turns out.

DC3 to a B-18....looks possible, the tail in the DC3 is similar, but defiantly not the same, the tail in the B-18 looks to be higher, and the nose is very different. If you could pull it off, that would be amazing!

I do know that the DC-2 (I said DC-3 earlier) was Douglas's starting point when designing the Bolo. The wings were lengthened a few feet each and, like you said, the tail surfaces appear to be a bit larger. And the fuselage looks to be completely different. I dunno, maybe it isn't worth trying to modify a TF kit. It was just a thought.
