Well, 26" of snowfall in 5 days lent for some great basement time. I am a pretty fast builder, but when I got the time to just get it done, a new plane arose quickly. I have for a long time heard how great the something extra's are, but finally bought one. this Plane FLEW together. WOW do I love laser cut parts.
I love the way this thing will go together at the field, i wish all planes were that way.
the only big modification i did to it was i added about an 1 1/4" to the rudder. other than that, she is stock. i think it is going to be my new favorite plane.
The biggest problem I have, is that I dont have any covering that i wanna use for this plane, so thats why im on the computer, Tower here i come. Might just sneek another SSE on the order. LOL
Any suggestions for the color scheme? Chime in! Im thinking im gonna go with a couple of pearls. (teal and white?) Im a monokote fan.
By the way, Tori is my setter that helps me build. That is until the sanding bar comes out, then she goes and hangs out with mom. She hates balsa dust.

That's a lot of snowfall. If i'm not mistaken, doesn't South Dakota drain into the red river basin in the spring. If it's does, my Big Sky Flyers Field is going to be under water. Not to mention ...... maybe my house. Remember 10 years ago, the flood of the century.
Oh yeah, nice build.

You'll like the SSE. Here's my most recent bash.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5239448/tm.htm
From experience I can tell you that hacking off the top half of the tail fin and fixing it the the rudder as a counter balance adds a BUNCH of rudder authority. I've compared side by side this mod to one like yours and the counter balance was considerably more effective (if you're looking for knife edge authority). I did both counter balance and trailing edge mods on my new SSE. Also added removable side force generators and bashed the elevators too. Pull pull cables on the rudder and aft mounted the elevator servo (I did this on my last SSE and it worked awesome).
Color scheme... hmmm..... well how 'bout a BudLight or MillerLight scheme? lol [8D]
Regardless what you do with your SSE.... I'm sure you'll like the plane. It's a good all around sport plane... and if you over power it... it'll be a sport plane with a bad attitude.... [>:]

Jim, Yes we do get to pass all of our water on down the line. I do remember '97. but in our case, it was coupled with a saturated ground (and full lakes) going into winter and then a LOT of snow, then a lot of spring rain. I remember putting out sand bags at friends house at the lake. We should be fine this year though, most of our lakes are low by Many FEET. Maybe its just what we need to kill that drought status. Thats my story anyway, i dont wanna use my flood insurance policy. They did update the report, they say we have over 30" on the ground now. but the sun is out!
Anyway, i stuck with pearls and the covering is ordered. I wish i would have done that ahead of time. im gonna start a Uproar .60 today though, so i have something to do....or should i build that Sig Fazer?
If this keeps up, ill have to crash some planes! ive been building like crazy! what else am I suppose to do? ive never had so many planes without electronics in them. Gonna have to make some tough choices.
i think i have 5 "flight packs", what would you choose?
GP extra 3002 .40
GP Dazzler
SSE
GP Ultimate (im gonna wait till i can buy a four stroker for this one"
1/4 Aeronca champ
GP Elite glider (this stays, mini servos all around. plus, i gotta get to the next LSF level this summer.)
UCD .46
midwest 27% giles 202 (no engine for this yet)
I think thats all?!

what size engine you guys have or are putting on your sse's? Is a os 70 4 stroke adequate? Or should I use a 56 Saito? I don't have to be able to really wring it out. But do want it kind of lively.

I am at the same place as you are, waiting to cover my SSE.
But then I've been there since a year ago.
Maybe you'll inspire me to get going on mine again.

Dixieland, How long did it take you to frame up your SSE? I may start on mine. Just finished an Astro Hog and from what I understand I could build 10 sse's for the one AH. Just wondering how long it took you.
Thanks,
Jim Tice
in hope to be warm soon NC!

cubfloater, i would say that it took me about 12-18" of snow to get "it framed up". LOL.
It goes together FAST. im trying to do the math here, but i would say 10hrs and this thing look like an airplane. i have been screwing with it for the last couple of nights as i am waiting for the covering to show up. I think i build fast and i probly only have 30 hrs into it total. A lot of its just messing with the small stuff. To me shaping takes the longest and there is a little but now as much as the hog. It wil be a lot faster, but im not sure you could build them 10 to 1.
FYI-my next one, im gonna sheet the turtle deck, i think it will look better.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking. It will be a joy to get back to a laser cut model after building an Astro Hog and Hog Bipe. Not that I wouldn't do them again, just not right now. After all my service guy said that my chainsaw needs a rest. Hope you get your covering on soon and the snow goes away or if not get some skiis and take off.
