RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Butch, Murphy is right, the Saito 82 is pretty small for this plane - that's why you needed so much lead. It flys great with an OS 91. I have an old YS 91AC in mine now and it's vertical is amazing - not unlimited, but pretty close.
A Saito 125, YS 110, or OS 120 would be sweet! They would also give you the extra power to haul a smoker around

Update:
My rebuild stalled out for a while... But, it's picking up steam again and I'm about 1/2 finished covering it.
Here's where it's at:

I think you hit the nail on the head. Plus, it keeps me home in the nest!
It's gonna be fun this winter! I will have 4 kits to build. I am looking forward to putting pics of my Skybolt here.

BTW, since I knew there was zero chance of getting a 4 stroke for the Skybolt, do you folks think the .90 is a decent choice? (The Elf would have gone ballistic on the price of a 120 4 stroke!)

Buy used. I put a nearly brand new Saito 1.20 in my Skybolt...think I paid $225 for it. Runs like a top. Maybe your "elf" will give you a gift certificate

Making some good progress.... The basics are done, I just need to glue the hinges, install the electronics, etc... and clean it up.
Please ignore the mess in the background. These pics are taken in "man-land" aka "the basement" and it's always a mess when I get into the covering phase...

Thanks!
Just an FYI, it's not yellow/blue, it's yellow/metallic plumb (and aluminum for the checkers and some of the 'boltz)...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Hello everyone,
I'm glad to see this thread back on the first page of the forum again except all the great looking planes in this thread are really making me miss mine.[&o] There is a bright side to at though which leads me to this question. I have both the Great Planes kit and I just picked up a Sig kit at a good price. So my question is, which one should I build first? Power for either will be a Saito 125. Don't be shy fellas, tell me what you think.
micagreenmachin, AWESOME looking Skybolt!!. Did you hand cut the squares on the bottom of your plane (or am I the only one brain dead enough to do it)?
Happy Holidays

I hand cut them... It isn't that bad if you get a good technique down.
I taped 2 metal rulers down on my cutting mat exactly 2 1/8" apart, slipped the monokote underneath the first one closest to me far enough to touch the second one and cut a strip. Then turn the strip perpendicular to the straight edges and slip it underneath the first one again touching the second and cut your perfect square. Rinse-wash-repeat and you've got 121 perfect squares in no time flat (well, maybe about 45 minutes or so flat). I used the windex-method to apply them....
If they were much smaller than the 2-1/8" I used I would have used a different technique. But for larger squares, I like to hand lay them...

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
got my self started yesterday after a long procrastionation period. what ya all think about stuffing a zenoah 20 gasser in there. that is my plan. looks like i can get it to fit into the cowl with a little bit of trimming lol. i am going to try to use this post to keep adding info and pics so please be paitent if it does not work as planed!
2/4/08 xxxxx $ircra$halot xxxxx take a look at the last picture. you can see the fit on my top piece you were asking about. it was real important to use packing tape to make a round clamp to get that section tight. a little water in a spray bottle to wet it out made the slight bend easier .also so as not to stress the part.i used white glue in alot of the exterior parts to make sanding easier. this is my first build so i did not want to sand ruts into the soft balsa trying to sand any glue marks out . also i am a landing gear distroyer. i felt it was important to beef up this area as it looked weak. i added some hard wood splints under the tray and pinned it in with some bambo sticks from the top and thru the front to key it in . also being i am going to put the gasser in i felt the firewall was weak at best so i added some tri stock and a square block at the bottom. planking tonight so not much happening as white glue is slow set up. more to follow.
2/8/08 got some planking done on the bottom and some sheeting on the top. waiting on the wood to dry with the packing tape wraped to help with the curve before i glue and trim.more tomorrow.
2/09/08 tail finished. having fun now!

ITS A KIT SO IT WILL BE A FEW WEEKS AWAY. MORE LIKE A FEW MONTHS LOL. ALSO THE MOTOR IS HEADING OUT TO MIAMI FOR ONE OF MY NEW FOUND FRIENDS. HE IS A ZENOAH GURU AS THEY RACE BOATS. HE IS GOING TO LIGHTEN THE MASS AND GET HER TO A SWEET SPOT OF 13000 RPM. IF IT FITS SHE SHOULD BE A REAL SCREAMER. I ALSO THOUGHT OF DOING A BUILD LOG FOR ALL TO SEE AS WELL.

RE: Skybolt hangar and clubhouse
Greetings mrfixit
I too am trying to shoehorn the Zenoah 20 into a skybolt. I find the real challenge is that the Motor mount that comes on the Zenoah interferes with the mounting slots for the inside cabane holders. I have tried turning the mount 1/4 turn and it would work except, I foresee a problem getting at the lower right mounting bolt. Plus from what I can tell, stand offs have to be used to get the motor out of the cowl, but again the slots for the cabane holders run interference. Don't quote me, but I think they need to be approx. 3/4 to 1" long. I've tried on 3 occasions to fashion a new aluminum mount with out success. I think I might be able to laminate something to the front of the firewall to get away with it. Also, the muffler that comes with the Zenoah looks like it will not clear the side of the cowl, I found one at B&B specialties for $34.95 it is just a header, not a pitts, but, it will fit inside the cowl. your club may frown on the noise, I don't know I've not heard one but plan to get one, I Don't have an issue with noise because there is no one around for miles where I fly,
Right now I am having a problem with the cockpit bottom not fitting right. I'm not sure since I've not read it in the instructions, but I think maybe the top of the fuse sides have to be wet and bent around the former F-2 and the firewall like the instructions describe to do to the bottom of the fuse sides.
