I just put on the final touches so I took some shots. This is the little built up Kobra, not the big one with foam wings.
As A completely finished plane with all the gear installed except the engine, muffler, spinner and prop it came in right at 3 pounds. Then it took on some weight, I was shooting for 4 pounds but it came in at 4.5 pounds.
The engine is A hot rod Webra with A tuned muffler and the muffler is big. Problem is all the extra RPMs it produces the new owner/pilot likes so the muffler has to stay. There is A set of racing wheels for it but I didn't want to take it's first photos with ugly shoes on.
If it can go around the pylons and maintain the speed it should be A winner.

Beautiful job!! I built and flew that plane for a little while. It was WAY ahead of my skills at the time, maybe still now. I turned it back into a builders kit. Doc

Doc, I built this one for A friend I used to pit for and do his mods and repairs for, I'm not going to maiden this one for him. This engine and muffler were out of his last unlimited racer, this is club racing by the way. It's A beefed up Webra .55 and I can't remember how many RPMs it was putting out but it was way more then any of my small engines ever pulled.
I didn't bother flying the last plane he had for the class either, it's all I can do to count the laps for him. This new plane is much lighter and more streamlined plus very RED, it's going to be A hard one to see but it is the color and design the pilot wanted. I added the white to the bottom because I have seen them get away and no one know if they were right side up or not.
This guy can handle it and loves the sport.

Grey Beard-Nice to see it all come together. Please give us a report on how it fly's. I see you cut the Elev. down also? GOOD Job. The one I built, I already changed engines and put a OS 46 AX instead of the Magnum 46XLS. The Mag leaked oil to much and would not transition in the mid range-Fast though!
The OS is just better-also makes it ready for the 55AX-You were right, I'm getting closer to the 60.
Sure would like to see some new builds on this plane.

Frenchie, I mainly posted these for you to see how it came out. There is A set of racing wheels for it, they weigh the same as these I have in the photo but are more stream lined. I don't really know how much bigger engine could fit in this little plane, that 55 took up most of the fire wall and I had to build the cowl around it. The owner said he may have A smaller spinner for it too.
I will be going tomorrow to UPS and see about shipping it to him due to his location and the fields he has close by it may not get maidened for A little while. I will post up when I get the word.
Good catch on the cut down ailerons, did it to the elevator too, should have no flutter problems with it at any speed the way they are set in. Covering is all in one piece too so no hinge gaps at all top or bottom. I put the wing halves together upside down and flat on my bench so it is almost straight.
Now to find out if it will go around A corner or not.

Very interesting on the wing! How did you cover all in one piece and still get control throw? Did you move the controls to max deflection then iron down in the gap and back up to the control surface (both sides). Great idea-you can glue in the hinges first.
PS-started a 4*60 project that i documented, may post another 4* build if someone wants to see it?

Yep, pretty much that way. I cover the bottom first and iron around the ailerons then cut at each corner so I can pull it down. I start with my ailerons with A lot of deflection because you can loose some due to the thickness of the covering. I use the flat blade in my trim iron and work the covering down into the gap then back over the aileron. I have even used one big sheet of covering and covered the top and bottom with it that way. I just iron down the LE first then cover the bottom then the top.
I always hinge before covering so it hides the wood pin I put through the hinges. There is A photo of that in this months AMA mag. I use cut off tooth picks for that. Never had A hinge pull out.

Thanks, I just may try this on my 4*60 build. Used robart hinges for the first time and will definatly seal the gaps. I may post this build, i have alot of little tricks that many first time builders can pick up on. Learned all my building from a 30 year veteran. He builds planes to last a lifetime.
