Hope you don't mind one more chipmunk fan chiming in. I built a CG kit last year and was able to fly it four times before winter set in. This was my first kit build after flying only arfs for about 5 years. I love the plane. One thing I did is to build servo bays in each side of the wing instead of using the single servo setup with all the flimsy linkage. I put a magnum .91 4 stroke in it and bought the fiberglass specialties cowl and wheel pants. The radio is JR with 821 digital servos. The only thing that scared me on my maiden flight was how sensitive the ailerons are. I put expo in the ailerons, rudder, and elevator to tame it down a bit...

Here are a couple more pics of mine. I couldn't get them to load earlier. By the way eagleope, that is a nice scheme you have on your plane with the stars and stripes. Does anyone out there have a chippy covered in the Pepsi scheme? If so, post some pics...

Thanks for the compliments! I used Monokote metallic red, metallic blue and white. I also did some painting with metallic red, metallic blue and white Lustrekote paint. The metallic paint was awful and I think it's been wisely discontinued now.
I put aileron servos in the wings as well. I have a Magnum .91 4s in mine and it is just right with a 14x6 prop.
I used the stock cowl and pants but lusted over fiberglass parts.
My maiden went pretty smoothly but on the second flight or so the covering ripped off of the top of one wing while in flight (check all those seams twice). I couldn't tell what happened at first, I just heard a loud pop and saw something big fluttering down. I landed the plane with no handling problems and realized then that the top of one wing was completely open!

Hey Mike, or anybody else. I've checked all the threads & your's said you've had 3 Super Chips. OK, when I started this thread I was Not going to do any mods. Well, my ideas always get ahead of my brain,(it don't take very long). I've put servos in each wing-no problem. I did reinforce the LG blocks on the wing. Using a Fiberglass Specailties cowl. Now, that's the end of the easy stuff.. I thought it would be smart (here I go getting into trouble) to compensate for the uh, sometimes ruff landings that I have. My thumbs never twitch till I'm landing!! Anyhow, back to my problem, I want to put an Ohio Super sportster pull-pull tailwheel assembly on it. I've been out in the shop for 2@#$%## hours & STILL can't even begin to get any ideas how to do it!!! Can anybody out there give me any thoughts on this? Pictures will definitly help !!

Outdoorhunter,
I have built two Chipmunks in the past and loved them both, great flying planes. The mods I made were to the second one. I did the wing servos with full length ailerons (I never used the flaps on the first one). I also mounted both servos in the tail to simplify the linkage. I flew OS .61FXs in mine and was able to balance the plane with just the battery over the fuel tank. The first version used push rods from the center and I had to add tail weight.
Just my two cents...

Skyduece,, What kind of rear tailwheel did you use ? I'm wanting to do a pull-pull, but I can't seem to get my brain in gear to figure it out !! The way the rudder linkage is routed the tailwheel to rudder linkage (springs).would have to go through the elevator There has to be a way !!

Hunter,
I never used a pull-pull on mine because of the rudder arrangement. As I recall, the tailwheel that came with the kit has an extra long rod to it so it can be bent into the rudder, run through the fuse, and then out to the tailwheel. With the tail on that bird, it is impossible to use either the springs from a pull-pull set up, or one of the sullican ones that connects to a slider on the bottom of the rudder. I never got fancy with mine (just ran the long rod and it was fine), but I see three ways you could do it:
1) run two sets of pull-pull cables that exit at the different spots on the fuse to control both the rudder and tailwheel from the same servo
2) use the existing long rod that connects the two, but solder a control arm to the rod (or by an off the shelf version of a small nose gear arm that would use a collar and grub screw) and keep the controls internal to the fuse (you could do this with the elevators too) Just make sure you keep provisions for a bottom hatch plate so you can inspect it periodically
3) The overkill option, use a micro servo inverted and mounted to the fuse bottom to direct control the tailwheel with springs, and then run separate cables to the rudder.
On the Chipmunks I had (until #1 water landed, long story; and #2 suffered a battery failure) I went with the stock option with no problems. The large surface are of the rudder gives you tail authority pretty fast on the take-off runs. I built these years ago when my skills were not so good and didn't dabble into over-engineering stuff too often, like I do now. I have found that simple solutions often work, and can be sexy as well.
Good luck,

The tailwheel wire was missing in my kit. ( Ebay) I was trying to figure out a way to use this pull-pull system I've had laying around here for a while. I think I'll just go ahead & rig it the stock way. Thanks. I would still like to see some pics of everybodies Chipmonk to get ideas on color !! I'm def going Red white & blue, but don't know exactly what pattern.

Hay man
Looks like people are playing games with me again. On the pull ,pull use a all thread like on duel controls and run your wires through a tube in fuse where they exit the top for guides. As long as there is no drag and free movement you have it made.
Looks like my PIC are blocked also

Thanks Larry; I don't have very many tools here,as we come to Florida for the winters. I can bring only so much stuff in Nov. My "shop" down here consists of a 10 by 10 utility shed. Up in Indiana, my shop is 24 by 24 with all kinds of tools. It sometimes makes it kinda challenging to build down here. I fish 5- 6 days a week & when the weather is not good, I'll build a plane. Don't get me wrong, I'm whinning, the coldest weather we've seen has been 46 degrees. Oh well, somebody has to live like this !! I'm glad it's me !!! Thanks for the help Ed to Home Depot I go to get a drill bit !!

Ya, when you go to the mall & see some of them,-- that's a scary thought !!! Although, look what we're leaving them ! I know all the new stuff( computer radios, mix this & mix that) I just can't keep up. I like flying w/ just a simple set up. It's getting so I like to build almost better than fly.--- Almost Ha! There is a lot less pucker factor sometimes !!!!!! Later Ed

I've got the Chipper about finished. We are leaving Florida Friday heading back to Indiana for the summer. I'll finish it up there,(ailiron servos & I'm ready for it's maiden.) When I get back, I'll take pics,(before the maiden flight just in case) & if I can figure it all out I'll post them. I might have to get my 12 yr old grandson to do it, but that's OK. I went kinda crazy w/ mine Stars & Stripes everywhere. I think I'll be able to see it in the air . Later Ed
