Well unfortunatly i demolished the crap out of my Sig 1/6 Cub yesterdaybeyond all repair [
] So i dont think il be happy until I build another cub so thats what im going to do.
My dilema is this, i have little experience in the different Cub kits and i need a few questions answered if possible
I either want 1/5 or possible 1/4 scale if it makes a much better model.
Which is best to convert to L4?
Which has the best Scale realism?
Best flying characteristics?
Is 1 piece or 2 piece wing the better route, or does it make much difference?
I dont mind a stick build as the 1/6 Cub i built was just that.
I did see a few posts on Cubs but most were comparisons between 2 specific models
Is Sig and BUSA the 2 best models? I will be scaling it out to the best of my abilities
If anyone can offer any assistance i appreciate it.

I have both the sig cub and the balsa US 1/4 scale. The balsa cub flys so much better than my sig.My balsa is in military colors, not L4. My good friend is converting his balsa cub to the L4 I fly mine with a G23 gas more than enough power but lots of fun The balsa has a two peice wing. If I can help you in any way let ne know

I'm building the 1/5 sig. It goes together quite easy. I am covering it with koveral. If you search you should find a build thread on here where someone converted his to a full blown L4. It is a great looking model.

My father was one of the guys whos started the Polar Bears club here at Palos field. Was Palos RC around then or are you refering to the Polar Bears. I know now its 107th aerosquad and Palos RC at the field.
He has been flying at that field for probably 35 years but no longer part of any of the clubs.

I have the busa 1/4 scale J3 kit, and bought the L4 plans (from busa). I traced all the parts in the kit and have a fully framed up J3 and L4 greenhouse version. The L4 upper cockpit frame where the wings mount are not as strong as the J3 varient but is ok as long as you dont get crazy with the menuvers. I was originally going to power them with OS 1.20 4-strokes but have since change my mind and will be going with 20cc gas 2-strokes. I prefer the sound of the 4-strokes but glow fuel costs convinced me to convert to gas on future builds. Its not a hard build, very straight forward. HOWEVER, the ailerons are not scale. Not a big problem if you are a builder. Its easy to modify the ailerons to the scale bottom hinge location. The kit is top hinged for the ailerons. Mine will be using a pull-pull setup for the ailerons. The elevator is not in the scale location either but that too it not a big deal to modify. Just look at some accurate 3-views. I would highly recommend you install the rear float mounting plate in the fuse when you build. You never know if you want to put floats on.
Nothing looks finer than a cub side slippin down to the runway center line.

I am refering to the palos rc club. At that time there was only the one club at the forest preserve. I went back there in 1997 and there was a sailing club and some others there. it got pretty busy

Trax,
Get the SIG 1/5 Cub. You won't be sorry. It's probably the best engineered kit presently in production. It's also one of the most scale looking of all the Cub kits and looks like it would be pretty easy to convert to an L4. It's an easy and pleasureable build. Good luck and have fun!

Go with the Sig kit. Build a jig to fabricate the wing 'carry thru' for wing spars, i.e., two piece wing with functional struts. The carry thru tubes have all neccessary music wire to resemble fullscale 'greenhouse'. The carry thru will be brass tubes that fit the music wire stubs inlet into wing spars. A grub screw will fit into a hardwood block near wing root underside and the grub screw will snug into a groove in wing wire stub... or you can have a nylon screw thread into wing root from inside fuse. The loads on this are minimal but this will keep wings from slipping

I have built both the Sig 1/6 and 1/4 scale cubs (full span and clipped wing versions). Out of the (2) of these I would choose the 1/4 scale, as it flies more realistic then the 1/6 scale. I have no experience with the other kits or scales that are mentioned, so I can't comment on them.
