Default GP ultimate Bi-plane, finally finished.

Dang, took me forever to finish this plane, but now its done. Hope to maiden it this week if the weather is good.
Next plane will be a world models midget mustang. Here are some pictures of the final product. This is a Great planes Ultimate Bipe with a saito .65 up front.
I moved a sevo to each wing half instead of the one servo in the middle of the wing. The checkerboard on the bottom of the wings was done by hand using the windex method. Then each square was sealed with trim solvent. Hope ya like.

Dragonov3,

I have a GP Ultimate 40 size on the building board now. I have completed the stabs, rudder, and elevator halves. Like you, I plan to use two servos in the lower wing. I have the lower wing almost done except I need to flip it and sheet the lower part. I have not started the upper wing or fuse. I appreciate any hints you would like to share as I build the rest of the components. I plan to install a Saito FA82 that came off of my Funtanna 40... R.I.P. I will probably mount it inverted but havn't decided for sure. I know that is overkill but, the motor will keep me from buying one and I'm pretty good at throttle management.

I bet the checkers took awhile. Looks really nice . I did a Slowpoke with checkers and it took me forever ,
My Ultimate does,nt really have any bad flying traits and is one of the easiest of my planes to land. The only problem I have is it gets small fast , just to give you a heads up .

How do the plug-in outer wing struts hold up? I've got one in the box and I'm wondering if the struts should be modified.

Good question , as a matter of fact , after I set the wing incadence , I installed a small cable on both wing tips, with a screw run into the end of the main spar. It had a slight hum when doing high speed pass, and it went away after I tied the wing tips together. But my kit thedie cutting and wood were the worst I,ve run into , most the parts were crushed instead of stamped. And a lot of the balsa was harder than Maple so I ended up hand cutting a lot of the parts. If your kit is a good one , you probably wont run into this problem.

I thought that might be a problem. A reviewer here said something about the plane oscillating up and down at high speeds. If the incidences are not perfect I don't see why the wingtips couldn't "fly away" from each other.

They both look great. Good job fella's. I have been looking for a home for a Saito .65, this could be it. How is the quality of the cowl and wheel pants? Are there after market fiberglass ones available?

Ummm. Lots of beautiful examples of my favorite full scale airplane, the Ultimate Biplane. Thanks for the pics and conversation, Amigos.

Oldscaleguy ,I had the stock cowl on mine for some time now . I glued it together with thin CA and then used a good grade of lite body filler, not Bondo brand .Here,sa few pics of the cowl. I do custom airbrushing on motorcycles and just usre the automotive primers and thinners, So far it has held up really well.

I don't think the abs plastic cowl and wheel pants will hold up. i will probably order the fiber glass ones . I also had to re cut the parts for the front turtle deck because the wood for that was so warped i couldn't use it. Other then that, the kit was an easy but long build. Mostly long because I didn't get out to the shop as much as I wanted too.

Evercoat Lite weight part# 100157 . It,s over a 1 1/2 yrs on the plane and still looks good. But , this is the first ABS cowl that has,nt gone to pieces with in a few days of flying. I did insulate the cowl mounts and srews , and this seemed to knock down the vibration alot.

Another thing you can do is to layer thin fiberglass cloth inside the cowl and wheel pants, that adds a lot of strength and durability to otherwise thin vacuum formed plastic.

Well, I maidened her last week, little bit of right trim and she was good to go. My 1st few landings sucked, haven't flown a plane like this in a while, must keep airspeed up because she slows down real fast. Flew her again today, got six flights on her, have the landings down, lands like a dream. Will probably take her out tomorrow for six more flights. I love this plane. Saito .65 is the perfect engine for this plane. Plane is not overpowered or underpowered.

I have one of these with TT.60 2 stroke for power. I love it. I have the CG set behind the manual limits so it has neutral stability. It does the most insane negative snaps I have seen. My build is standard but be careful with the rudder linkage. I had rudder flutter on my first few flights till I changed the linkage to a ball joint. Apart from that I give mine a real thrashing and it comes back for more.
