Hey guys,
I already ordered the Midwest Extra 300XS, but then i saw the Hostetler Extra 300XS kit from kitcutters.com. Does anyone have experience with these models? Is one better than the other? I'm starting to second guess buying the Midwest. Thoughts??

Zip,
I bought the plans for the Hostetler Extra 300 27%, haven't built it though.
Hostetler designed this model thinking on electric power but it works with gas too, he told me. One thing to consider is he designed it with one piece wing. This is not a two piece wing with tube assembly as you would think.
I sent you a PM too.

Since they are located in my home state I had to pay sales tax...but magically the price of the item was lowered and the sales tax made up the difference to bring it to the same price.
I can't shake the feeling I'm going to get an email saying they don't have any.

Hi All,
Good to know others out there building the same plane.
I'm building the Midwest Extra 300XS, the kit is about 5 years old. Fuse is 80% and 1 wing 50%
Im thinking of DLE 55 for power plant
Let me know how it goes

I called them last year and specifically asked about their 80" Extra and Cap and they said they didn't have any so we'll see.

Nice kit, just gotta get back to building it.
Points to note. In the wings and Elevator I have used lots of additional Shear Webs, careful on the balsa grain. Must run vertically. I also used A LOT of balsa triangles throughout the fuzz. After intial gluingI done everything againwith Ultra wood glue (Must be water proof)
Also I did not like the blocks for the horns in controlsurfaces. See my pics

I have a friend who has one. He did it up as a miss budweiser. Powered with a moki 2.1. Very nice plane, very capable. I was considering one. He suggested that during construction keep an eye on the weight. His came out to 17 lbs. This friend also has another fiend with one powered by a dl50. He says flies great. The one with a dl50 was done up as a kokanee. I never got to see it but apparently it was a very nice job.
Here are a few pics of it... Sorry they are the best I got.

If I get a tracking number on the Extra I ordered next week I'll go ahead and order the CAP. I hope it works out.
I have a pair of Moki 2.10's that will fit right in.

If Midwest hasn't changed (updated) the design over the years, it too has a one-piece wing. Nice model though.....

I have a MW Extra 300S kit I bought few years ago. I kept looking for a tail conversion kit to 300XS that was available once with no avail.
Now, I hope I can start building the 300S this winter using the 300XS tail as a template to get a full 300XS out of the 300S kit and keep this 300XS kit for future.
I will purchase a CAP too it they are still available before Christmas.

EF,
Aren't you adding too much weight to your model?
Everyone recommends to keep these models light because they end up heavier than spec.
Just a thought.

More strength than weight. Using basla and very little epoxy. Mostly Cyno and Ultra wood glue (Water proof) Using Carbon undercarriage, Chief aircraft also sells them. Horn blocks and shear webs definately need strengthening, most elev but also wings.

That link posted above to the planes on their website is no longer valid. Same thing comes up when you click on the menu under airplanes.
