Don't you love it when people bid up a old used kit to $97.99 with shipping. When they could buy a new one for $72.99 retail.

i sold an extra King Kobra kit for $110 plus shipping. more than they cost at Sig. lack of research imo. that or ebay makes things easy with paypal. some people don't have credit cards.

Some time ago I saw some body selling on ebay the cut die’s of the ultra sport 60 for something like $100, didn’t know what to do with it then, Thought i need some machinery like presses, now I’m sorry I didn’t buy the whole US60 factory.
Oh well no point of crying over spilled milk.

Hi guy's. My Son wants to try his hand in building from a kit. Any suggestions on what would be some good starter kits? Thanks.

Ever since Kaz's Taurus sold for a bazillion dollars, the market has gone through the roof...
I watched a NIB Taurus kit sell for $600+ soon after that too. Just shook my head in amazement. Makes you wonder who is really buying these kits. My theory is mostly resellers and not builders. Most builders know what the value is, and unless it's got sentimental ties, just won't go that high.
I missed out on a sale yesterday on a fantastic NIB Royal (just Royal, not R/M) P-26 Peashooter. I had my limit set at $350, which was looking good at $265 with 5 minutes left. I wasn't going higher, and walked away. When I checked back after the auction ended, it had bid 9 additional times and sold at $405.
Man, I wanted to build that one. Just not enough to spend that much on it though.
Hooray for the builders who do.
Anyone have a P-26 for sale?

My conclusion is I have to get the skills and the tools to scratch build canopies, cowls, landing gear, etc. That's the main reason kits help, and I'm not sure it's really that bad once you get into it. The balsa certainly isn't to deal with, and you get better control of the wood and the fit.
I found an old Tower catalogue when I was cleaning out my shop, from only about 15 years ago, and we're never going to see that range of choices again. So people are getting a kind of desperate feeling about the old kits and the prices sometimes go berserk. Yet what was actually in those kits was often not that great. Look at the prices of old Sterling kits. You can buy some nice tools for those prices. And build a MUCH better airplane. Also, there are lots of cottage industries to assist you.

ispirit99,
A good source for electric kits (ranging from 1st planes to 3D planes) is Stevens Aero Models:
http://www.stevensaero.com/
Their kits are well designed and laser cut and most important, they fly well. I have built and flown many kits (~30) over the years and I believe Stevens Aero kits are some of the best available...and they are made in the USA!

I saw a Sterling Skylark (famous CL stunter) go for close to $300. That's a long out-of-production kit that is sought after. I think there is some sentimental ties with some of these kits. Like the Skylark....maybe some guy had one as a kid, saw it, and didn't care what he had to spend to get it.
Now on the other hand I've seen people try and sell Carl Goldberg Piper Cubs on Ebay for starting at $100, or an Electra starting at $150. Now you'd have to be a sucker to buy that....
Same goes for the guys paying more than $100 for Great Planes Ultrasports. While it's a great airplane, it's selling for $100 even in some of the the "buy it now" gigs from hobby shops.
I love looking on Ebay for old kits and hobby stuff in general.

I keep harping on this subject but builders better be making up templates of any and all kits they buy so when they are no longer made we can keep them alive. It's not hard and going to be well worth the trouble in the future!!

Call SIG and see if you can actually get one. I called them a few weeks ago and even their POPULAR kits are looking at the end of May 2010 before they can start shipping them. That's the "popular" kits.

How hard is it to cut you own kit from plans?? Builders don't need kits, kits make it easier but if you do a search you can find the builders plans. I opened up one of my MAN plans catalog and right there in front of me is a 84 inch P-26A It's a Dan Santich design and {this is an old catalog} cost $35.00. Anyone needing smaller planes, they are out there too.

That being said, the point wasn't about being able to cut and build from plans. A man with time, a saw, and dust mask can do that. It was a question of if builders or re-sellers were buying the old collector kits. You mashed the meaning of builder into the ability to slice balsa.
Seriously though, I would like to see those plans.

A couple of years ago I saw a Guillow's Pfalz DIII kit go for over $100 bucks! Maybe it's worth it to a kit collector wanting to relive his childhood, but really a Guillow's kit!!!??? [X(]
