I am in the process of building this plane and have a question. I really like the looks of the Pitts S1 rounded wing tips better than the Super Stinkers. Do you think if I change the tips (which will shorten the ailerons) it will kill the preformance of the plane? I am just a sport flier not into 3D but I dont want to destroy the preformance either. Thanks Erik

Why would it shorten the ailerons if you added a round tip? Does it have balance tabs on the outboard end of the ailerons? I'm with you on the more classic look is better thing.

It is kinda hard to explain but it would shorten them. On the super stinker the ailerons extend all the way out to the tip of the wing and on the S1 rounded wing the aileron stops just before the round tip starts. Thanks Erik

I don't know if it will change anything or not. I have gotten to fly both planes, I have never been able to get a good answer of the why of it all but the Stinker just fly's better?? I have never measured the two planes to check for differences and have gotten a lot of different answers? If I was lucky enough to get a Stinker kit I wouldn't do any mods at all. Both planes are very responsive {under statement} but the Stinker was just ???? Smoother???

The super stinker does fly better, it has a combination between the ultimate and pitts wing, it's a classic by now, that is the plane your building. So I would personally build it as drawn, no if's, and's or but's......at least you could show up and say it's a stinker!

Hello Texan,
I will be starting a Midwest Super Stinker build soon, just curious what did you put in for power. BTW, nice job, hope mine comes out decent.

Up to us to keep these old kits alive.

Hi John,
Thanks for the kind words. I am using an OS 200 four stroke. It is a light engine and the power should be just fine. It's not the most powerful engine but it will fly all the scale moves plus some. I have not flown her yet... still like her too much.

By the way, there is a mistake on the kit. The plane will come out 1/2 inch too short. For scale, add 1/2 inch balsa spacer on the firewall and blend in to the cowl.

Scott,
I have never seen it in print, but I have a Top Flight Cessna 182 and a Morrisey Bravo that have yet to see the air for the same reason, I still like em. For the Super Stinker I was thinking of either the YS 170 or going gas 40cc. I would guess either should fly it ok.
