Default My Kit Collection: Comments wanted

NOTHING IS FOR SALE!!!!!

I am developing a library of airplane kits. Not to hoard but to build and reproduce later if needed. I am very worried about the future availability of kits; almost to a point of hysteria! Some are currently produced but many are discontinued ones.

Here's what I have so far:

Goldberg:
Bucker
Ultimate
Chipmunk
-I need an Extra, Sukhoi, Cub, and Gentle lady

Great Planes:
Aeromaster
Super Skybolt
Giant Aeromaster
Ultrasport 60
Super Sportster 60
60 size Cap 21...believe it or not, these things actually fly great light. Don't deserve the Snap 21 rep.
-Can't think of any more I need

Sig
Hummer
King Kobra
Kougar
4 Star 60
4 Star 40
I would like a Kobra, 4 star 120, 1/4 scale cub, and the new 1/5 scale laser cub

Midwest
big Cap 232
big Extra 300XS

Others wanted:
Pilot models 1/3.5 Bucker...yeh right I'll ever find one
Balsa USA 1/3 scale Cub with floats
all the Top-Flite warbirds; big and small. I'm really not a scale guy but I like their warbirds (never built or flown one though)
BTE Venture 60 kit
Cloud Dancer 60
Seamaster 120
Direct Connection Ultimate Kaos 60
UltraSport 1000

Anyone have any comments. I think you can read the above list and tell what type of planes I like. Did I miss any classics?

NOTHING IS FOR SALE!!!!!

Unless you're twenty it looks like you've got enough already.

Great collection!
I've had a GP Super Skybolt for decade or more and no longer have the storage space, so it's on the building board now.

You shouldn't have any problem whatsoever getting a Goldberg Cub. Those are in abundance. The Gentle Lady should be easy too....the Extras are out there, but there getting more scarce and more expensive.

I, too, suffer from the same paranoia. But I'll go ahead and admit that I "hoard" them. I am perfectly secure in my paranoia with regards to kits disappearing.

Very nicecollection. I just picked up a CG Cub this week to rekit my old one. Tower has them in stock. And have the Sukhoi stashed. I also picked up a Venture a few weeks ago on RCU market place and a Sig LT40 . Good place to buy out of stock or production kits.

some kits were developed from plans ie, some of the sterling kits and goldberg as well as stafford and bridi, with the prices of some kits it is easier and cheaper to build from plans.plus the take up less space.

I have about 100 kits. Any you buy are good. I have not lost money on any I have sold. I sold a friends estate of kits and made money on every one of them.

As whatiwork4 mentioned, don't forget all the plans out there. The great thing about building from them is you get to select wood and change anything to your preferred method. I always come in lighter than the originals ( that is my goal).

I sometimes get upset with myself as I change so many things in a kit why did I buy it in the first place? After doing this for so long, I even design some of my own stuff now. I have learned so much from studying the great designs from the past.

I still grab all the kits I can, but I will probably scratch a kit from it and not disturb the original.

Make Templates of every kit you build, not far down the road there aren't going to be many kits left. When I say templates I mean every part. Just trace them on bond paper. Right now I'm looking for templates from the Goldburg Extra, not the one cut by Lanier. I built the last kit I had and never bothered to make templates, now I want another one and if I find a kit it is way too much money, I will have to cut my own but really need the templates to do it. If I get a set I will make up a set from seetemp so anyone needing them can have them. You have some pretty good kits there already!!

I wonder at what point you become a local hobby shop?

Dumb question now that I think of it I'm already a small hobby shop.

I have about 26 kits NIB. I am 49, so I have plenty for retirement days and for teaching and giving away to my grand kids.

Now, since it seems you like 60 size and above...may be you still need from GP an Extra 330L (e-bay when you see one). If you like 40 size kits, GP still making a few more that you don't have.

Midwest is selling their last kits on stock, including a stearman biplane. And yes, a few Hostettler plans.

My Kit Collection: Comments wanted

I think you have a lifetime supply! I would never collect this many kits, as my interests change from one minute to the next! So, I would rather have the money, then the kits. With a stockpile like you have, I would be concerned that when I die my wife will sell this stuff for pennies on the dollar!

I used to have several kits on hand but I was buying them at auction for next to nothing. I have built all of them other then a couple of the little ones. If I was to pass tomorrow I hope my wife would go out whare I fly and offer the guys the keys to my shop so they can pick what they want. Any money she would make from my RC stuff isn't worth all the trouble. My shotgun collection is another mater though, she should do pretty good there!!!

You need to get a Sig Smith Miniplane and you will finally be complete. As it is now, you are only partial. [sm=shades_smile.gif]

I PM'd you once.  Sorry about that.  I really did'nt take the time to think about how many of those you might get.  My Pm was about your Aeromaster.  Do you or anybody else here know where I could get my hands on the plans?  The entire kit would be great, but you gotta start somewhere with plan building.  And I did build the Areomaster back in the late 80's.    Seems like it was a Great Planes Super Aeromaster.  I may not remember that correctly.  I loved that bird.  It was a beauty.  It was just way beyond my flying skills and I was moving across the country so I sold it before I ever flew it.  Anyway, not that I am much better of a pilot, I would just like to build that one again.

I did learn something from my home insurance guy you may not like. If something happens to the house and you don't claim your collection ahead of time, it more than likely won't be covered, and if you do, it will be charged for as a collection. I have pictures of all of them for insurance, even the multiples all sitting together so they know I have more than one. He said if something happens, it may be a tough fight because i wouldn't declare it a collection. (I think in montana a collection is also taxed)

I don't remember the number of kits they said makes it that, but its all gov't crap if you ask me. Taxing me on my hobby would really suck!

(Yea, me too!)

Yep, same here...
Some are currently produced but many are discontinued ones.

Here's what I have so far:

Goldberg:
Bucker
Ultimate
Chipmunk
-I need an Extra, Sukhoi, Cub, and Gentle lady
OK, I'm envious that you have a Bucker Jungmann but man, do you really NEED a Gentle Lady?
Great Planes:
Aeromaster
Super Skybolt
Giant Aeromaster
Ultrasport 60
Super Sportster 60
60 size Cap 21...believe it or not, these things actually fly great light. Don't deserve the Snap 21 rep.
-Can't think of any more I need

Sig
Hummer
King Kobra
Kougar
4 Star 60
4 Star 40
I would like a Kobra, 4 star 120, 1/4 scale cub, and the new 1/5 scale laser cub
Wait a second, that's THREE Piper Cubs you've mentioned...What Ultimate flyer needs (or really wants) ONE cub?!
Midwest
big Cap 232
big Extra 300XS

Others wanted:
Pilot models 1/3.5 Bucker...yeh right I'll ever find one
Balsa USA 1/3 scale Cub with floats
Thats a GREAT scale Cub but you gotta LOVE Big Cubs AND Scale for this one!
all the Top-Flite warbirds; big and small. I'm really not a scale guy but I like their warbirds (never built or flown one though)
BTE Venture 60 kit
Cloud Dancer 60
Seamaster 120
Direct Connection Ultimate Kaos 60
UltraSport 1000

Anyone have any comments. I think you can read the above list and tell what type of planes I like. Mike
Well, you already have a big collection so rather than adding iffy stuff which waters it down, I would recommend thinning it a bit by selling some of the kits you're not crazy about. Take the money you make and buy something really rare and special. This is the way most high-end collectors do it. Over time the collection stays the same size but keeps getting better and better. Don't worry about Kaos kits and such. Those are so popular someone will probably always kit it. Try to focus on really rare BUT popular kits that would be difficult to reproduce. An example might be '70s pattern planes with fiberglass fuselages. They need a mold not just a laser pattern. Happy collecting.

You will definitely never be able to finish them, from what I see in the photo. You could cash in on some of that investment if you ever need some emergency funds.
