Default US 1000 build

Hello everyone.I must say I love rcu. Am 57 years old and just last april flew my first rc plane. It has been a passion of mine since childhood but when you own your own business it was not in the stars until now. My first flight was with a alpha trainer and then i bought some OLD planes that i had to install engines and electronics and have flown most of them. Having a blast.

Recently I bought a US 1000 kit on ebay for $123, and will try my first build.
Thought I would post some pics as I go.

OOps Last pic I got ahead of myself

If it's not too late, make some new ply doublers for the rib fronts and move the retracts out by one rib bay. (Between ribs 4 & 5 instead of 3 & 4)

This is a great airplane. I've never built the 1000, but I have built 5 or 6 of the 40 and 60-size

You might want to consider Flaps too!

Do a search for Ultra Sport and you'll find lots of great tip about this plane!

This is gluing the web in and the sheeting on the TE and LE . More Pics to come .
By the way, I won"t be using retract. I wish I could but too pricy for my wife. It will be a tail dragger though.

So far pics are of left wing. I screwed up and didn't get the bottom spar pinned dow tight and it came loose (ANd I didn't know) and rack the wing by about 1/8 inch. So I repinned it all down before the sheeting and it came out fine. Wing is straight now. Right wing pic to come.

You can buy the plans for it on RCM store. They also list the US60 plans. Now, if they sell the plans, does GP not own the rights to the plane?

I asked this very question of Art Pesch from Hobbico a few years back. Individuals can purchase the plans to cut and build a plane for themselves. Hobbico owns the rights to reproduce and SELLthe kits/planes. So if you were to cut a kit from those plans and then try to sell it you will be violating the copyright on it. But you can cut all the planes you want for your own personal use.

Hey Split S Close, Custom Cabinet Shop

Has anyone used a gas engine in a US 1000 yet? I have New ST3000 that I could use but I would like to try my first gas engine on this plane.
Seems the front is so narrow that a gas engine may not fit.

Great progress on a great airplane, I built and fly the US 60, you should consider flaps as it likes to land fast.

How would go about adding flaps? Sounds like a good idea if I could see it done. Any pics or build threads on how to do this?

yes sorry about that, check this thread its very good as reference: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_68..._4/key_/tm.htm
in theory you do the flaps on what should have been the central aileron servo and the ailerons from separate servos in the wings.

I have already cut the aileron and glued the end pieces to the wing TE. Is it too late to add flaps?

I have been trying to do a little research on flaperons and was wondering if that would be a better option but I can not figure how tp hook it up. I use a JR 7202 computer radio. I have not tried to figure how to set that part up yet. I don't understand how the servo hookup goes with flaperons. Any help??

Do NOT use flapperons. Long story short, they do not work well and have caused many crashes (Including one of mine)

Sounds like good advise. Will I need to use two servos on regular flaps, or can I use just one? If one, what is best way to link flaps together on this plane?

Just use one. Install the torque rods like you would for the ailerons, then link them together so they can flex a little (due to the fact that they don't pivot on the same angle)

I have a pic of it somewhere that I'll try to dig up

One servo will run both flaps..

Then two additional servos, 1 per wing, will run the ailerons.

This is my flap setup on my US60..

Mike,
The US 1000 isn't designed to use a torque rod setup for the ailerons. It's designed for dual aileron setup. But in this case it would be really easy to cut the flaps and set an aileron for each flap in the wing.

I assume you mean a servo for each flap.

Good point, but you can also buy torque rods from DuBro if you wanted to go that route
