HEY THERE IM BUILDING A TOP FLITE GOLD EDITION P-47 THUNDERBOLT BEING POWERED WITH AN ASP 1.20 4 STROKE. MY QUESTION IS I CAN NOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME FIGURE OUT HOW THE 2 COWEL HALVES ARE SUPPOSED OT BE CUT AND PUT TOGETHER THE MANUAL DOSNT EXPLAIN THIS ALL TO WELL FOR ME. AND IM WONDERING IF MAYBE I HAVE A BOTCHED FORMED COWEL BECASUE AS U CAN SEE IN THE PICTURE BELOW THERE APPEARS TO BE A SUNKEN IN EDGE WITH A VERY PRONOUNCED EDGE FOR THE LITTLE COOLING VENTS BUT ON THE OTHER HAF IT IS ALMOST ENTIRLY SMOOTH. I CANT FIGURE OUT HOW WHEN I JOIN THESE TO PIECES AT THE CENTER HOW IT IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE A FULLY RAISED COOLING VENT FROM WHAT I CAN PUT TOGETHER IN MY MIND IT WILL APPEAR AS THOGH I HAVE A BUNCH OF EVEN SIZED VENTS AND THEN AT THE TOP OF THE COWEL I WILL HAVE ONE LARGER ONE AND FROM PICS I HAVE BEEN LOOKING UP IT SHOULD BE AN EVEN AMMOUNT OF EQUALLY RAISED COOLING VENTS..ALSO THAT PRONOUNCED INDENT ON THE ON HALF ON THE RIGHT HAND OF THE PIC IF U WERE TO LOOK AT A SHOT OF THE BACK THAT SAME PRONOUNCED INBDENT ID ON THE OTHER COWEL HALF BUT THEN THE OTHER ONE IS SMOOTH AGAIN. SO IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME AS TO HOW U ARE SUPPOSED TO JOIN ALL THESE PIECES PLEASE SPEAK UP BEFORE I START CUTTING AND END UP RUINING WHAT COULD BE A PERFECTLEY GOOD COWL. I ONLY HAVE ONE SHOT AT THIS AND DONT WANT TO CUT ANY WRONG STUFF!

ON THE COWEL HALVES IT ALMOST LOOKS AS IF THERE SHOULD BE AN EQUAL INDENTING ON THE OTHER HALF BUT IT IS REALLY CONFUSING ME IS THIS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK?</p>

Simple way, is to order a new cowl from Fiberglass Specialties or from Fibertech. These are much better than the plastic cowl that comes with the kit.

ALSO HERE IS ANOTHER SHOT OF THE BACK HALF OF THE SAME PIECES OF COWEL ONLY ROTATED ..THEY LOOK THE SAME AS THE OTHER PIC EXCEPT BECAUSE THE ARE ROTATED THE INDENT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PIC WOULD BE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE PIC. IN OTHER WORDS EACH HALF HAS A SMOOTH SIDE AND AN INDENTED SIDE. BUT AS I HOPE U ARE ABLE TO SEE I STILL CANT FIGURE OUT HOW IF I JOIN THOSE 2 HALVES THERE WILL BEA NICE PRONOUNCED RAISED COOLING VENT RIGHT IN THE TOP OF THE COWEL. DUE TO THE SMOOTHNESS OF THE LEFT SIDE IN THE FIRST PIC

On the first picture, the half on the right, on the side facing us, this is like a tongue and groove joint that goes on the inside of the other half when glued. The other half should look just the same and they will fit together like a puzzle after you cut them out. When you cut them, look for a VERY faint line and that is where you cut. You will roughen the plastic with sand paper in the lower area on the right part and the inside of the other half.

After getting the cowl halves fitting together like they should. I always hold them together with masking tape on the outside, (all the way around). Then, take a few drops of medium CA to the seams on the inside to make sure it stays in place. Then, I'll take a 1/2" wide piece of fiberglass cloth & resin it completely around the inside on the seam ( make sure you rough up where the glass goes.) This will make it super strong & won't add weight to speak of. Good luck

thanks everyone for helping to clear up how that cowel is suppposed to go together, il give it a shot and see how it looks, i would consider getting an aftermarket fiberglass one but since i live in canada i dont know of anywhere on the canadian side to get such things and to order one out of the us im gonna be looking at like 65 bucks by the time it gets to my door. seems a bit expensive right now for me, especially since im still leanring to fly id hate to nose over or something and break a cowel that expensive. ha ha not that i plan to fly it anytime soon, maybe next year. for now i think il fly the alpha 40 more and hopefully my dazzler that i have alll sitting waiting to get in the air, thank god for realflight simulator.lol my first plane was a .25 great planes p-40 warhawk it didnt las tto long in the air, lol. was flying it fine but caught a glare of the sun off the monokote and lost it in the air for a second. next thing ya no it planted into the ground. i was almost able to pulll out of it but it caught the landing gear and flippped it bad. so from that i learned to go to a larger slower flying trainer for a while which i dont have any problems flying but wanna get use to not being so nervous flying if at al possible, lol. but at least the dazzler should be fun and it floats in for landings nicely!
