Ok, so I had hoped to get a lot more done on day 2, but life happens! The picture is terrible (phonecam) and makes it look like the wing is horribly twisted, but I assure you it is nice and flat! :D I'm going to do some filling and smoothing, and I still have to glass the center, but it's pretty much done.

What are people's thoughts on CA hinges? I've never used them before but they came with the kit.

Up next, fuselage!
Jester369

You are doing very nice work ___
Not my kind of work. We all have our own mehods.

Your phone-camera takes very nice pictures.
My vision is not good enough to see any distortion (out of flatness) else than it appears to me there is some dihedral.

I would not say the wing is flat if there is some desired dihedral or if there is some built-in washin or washout..

concerning CA hinges, they are much cheaper than pinned hinges to supply in a kit.
I have dozens here because I never used them. My standard is that control surfaces have to drop to their full mechanical stop by their own weight and thus have nearly no friction or bending elasticity at all.
Your work looks darn good. Keep up the good work.

CA Hinges are great for most appliacations! Cut your slot then drill a 1/16 hole in the middle of each slot to let thin ca wick into the hinge... when ready.. drip 4 drops of thin ca on each side of the hinge.. Have a paper towel ready incase you need to wipe covering.. Make sure and bevel the surface enough to prevent binding during travel up or down>>>Goooood job on what you built so far...you're gonna love this plane
DOES ANYONE HAVE Good plans for this plane?? I would like a copy?? The kits are out of production I think????
Terry

Regarding CA hinges:<div>
</div><div>I put together a .40-size ARF for a club member last fall. The elevator, ailerons and rudder used CA hinges (already installed). The movement of the control surfaces weren't as smooth as pin-type hinges, but they did move freely. He's been flying the plane all winter long - no problems.</div><div>
</div><div>Can't argue with what works, but it is a matter of the builder's preference. You may want to try out installing a few on scrap material so up your own mind as to what you like.</div>

Jester, great work so far! Don't worry about not getting much done, it's better to take things slowly and do them right than to get in a rush and take shortcuts. So far you're doing a superb job, and that will show in the way the finished airplane looks and performs.

Terry, Goldberg kits are now marketed through Great Planes. You can still get the Eagle 2, or you can get the original Eagle 63 plans through RCM Plans (plan #858).

CA hinges are great IF they are installed properly!

Read this article on installing them:

Another opinion question - OS 46AX or OS 56FSa?

I usually recommend a 2-stroke engine for beginners. In the event of a crashm a 2-stroke has less moving parts to break and/or is less expensive to repair or replace

That is very true. I guess I am a re-beginner, not having held a transmitter for years!

I do have an inexpensive electric RTF that I am going to bash around for a while before I fly the Eagle, and the field where I will be flying has a great club with a club trainer and instruction available, so I'm not TOO worried about auguring it in. Going to have to ponder this one for a while...

RE: Golberg Eagle 2 Build Questions

Ok, no pics tonight, but day 3 of building has resulted in the control surfaces being hinged (temporarily of course) and sanded, and the fuselage doublers and engine bearers installed. The formers are ready to go as well. I have to wait now for the engine for final location of fuel line holes and control rod holes in the firewall, and then the fuselage can go together pretty quickly.

I also built MinnFlyer's sanding table today, and it works very well!

Can you post the link for the sanding table. I like tools that help fit and finish...

Your going to love the Eagle 2, I learned on one back in 90-91, I ran a supertigre gs 40 ring, could hand start it by just snapping your finger on the spinner. I would fly about a gallon a day on that bird, doing touch and go's. Got so good at it that I could tap the high grass at the threshold of the runway everytime. My habbit of flying all day finally killed the bird, I flew till the RX battery died while in flight, it went full bore into the gravel driveway, it was my cue to upgrade to a sport plane.

I couldn't wait, so I found that I can wait on the firewall installation and do a bit more on the fuse. Here is Day 4!

You are making good progess for only a few days. The Eagle sometimes seems to build itself. As far as the hinges, I originally built mine with the CA hinges that came in the kit. When I recovered the plane a couple years ago, I used pin hinges, on a plane like this, as long as things move freely, you probably won't see a lot of difference, though I expect the pin hinges to hold up longer. I would also agree with the 2 stroke engine, just to keep things simple and economical.

Take a look at this thread, http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_76..._1/key_/tm.htm

There are a lot of ideas there for mods on the Eagle.

Enjoy the Eagle, it is a great flyer.

Erick, you will love your Eagle II once you fly it, is one of the best trainers I've flown. And when you are ready for that US Plus you have NIB you will fly one of the very best aerobatic sport planes out there.

I'll send you a picture of a satio .56 throttle install. A little tight but a ball link and small cable.

Day 5 update
Is there a sheeting coming up from the leading edge to the spar on he airfoil top ?

A light weight balsa sheeting would increase weight a bit but the airfoil shape improvements would more than offset the added weight. and provide more strenght to the wings.

There isn't, and I considered adding it for some extra rigidity. In the end, however, I decided to stick to the plans. I'll add some pictures later, but it's covered now, just waiting on adding some trim colors. Thanks for the input!

Once covered, the wing is plenty rigid. IMOP, any extra sheeting would be unnecessary weight.
I think you'll like the Eagle. I built mine as a taildragger, with a .46AX. The engine has plenty of power, and the airplane is great fun to fly.

Nice work so far :D

I really like that covering job! I'm also a big fan of the taildragger look - at some point I am going to convert mine, but to start I want the trike.

I did the tail dragger thing for awhile as well to practice for a Clipped Cub I'm building.. but it was so very stable on takeoff.. didnt even need rudder to couteract the propwash so it was sort of a waste.. just advance throttle and down the middle it went. so I made it a trike again. It is nice to come down on two wheels and it also does three point landings with ease but you have to bleed off quite a bit of speed before it wall stall and touchdown on all 3... to early and it will want to climb up..

Adjust your approach speed and / or start the flare out sooner.

I hope your instructor teached you how to judge the final approach speed.

Most fliers have a much too fast approach speed being afraid of stalling at low levels.

You can also make wheel landings and touch down where you wish.

With a tri-gear there is no risk of the model lifting again as the angle of attack is too low.
