RE: Sig Ryan STA
No Tom, I have been using the pressure that was recommended in the manual. Is there a benefit to going lower?
|
RE: Sig Ryan STA
A friend suggested 20 psi. I tried it, and my paint laid down better, and the over spray was greatly reduced.
Before you begin to paint, while you are adjusting your gun, spray a test piece using lower pressures. See if you like the results. If not, you can easily return to your original setting. |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
I have very little experience painting. I have a cheap LVHP gun I bought from Harbor Freight to paint the cowl and wheel pants on my Ultimate. The pressure was set a 30psi at the gun. I practiced and practiced before the real deal. I got it done and it looked ok but I wasn't completely satisfied with the results. I got an orange peel result from the base coat but after applying the top coat it looked a lot better. I'm thinking I should have used a lower pressure like 20psi. Latex was the base and Glasskote the top. Then again we were talking about buying cheap tools.

The fuse is now complete and awaiting paint! Finished the rudder cone this evening as well as attatching the remaining rivets. Oh boy....http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ular_smile.gif
The tail of this plane is dripping with a lot of detail that took quite some time to complete. |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
Yea! And it shows. Look's really good.
|
RE: Sig Ryan STA
That thing is really going to pop once the paint goes down.
Later!! Anthony |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
Looks wonderful Vincent. Can I ask what you did to surface-prep the ABS stuff for paint? Just a light sanding with 400 grit maybe? Just wondering I know you need to take the shine off that stuff before you paint it so everything adheres properly, just wondering if you have any secret method to that prior to assembling the pieces on the fuse.
Thanks, Dave |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
Thanks Dave, To prepare the ABS pieces for paintIgently sanded with some 600 grit sandpaper, just to break the shineto promote good adhesion for the paint.Really nothing to it.

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Looks really good VJ! Since I'm doing my first build I'm learning how all the little flaws can start popping out once the primer goes down. YIKES! It gives me a lot more appreciation for what you've accomplished!<div>

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Thanks, Robert and Anthony.
David don't dispair! Every plane/project that you complete your skill set improves. Your Cubwasn't the easiest plane to build as your first project, so you have done extremely well.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../thumbs_up.gif |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
I just looked at the date you started this build. You've been working on this plane for six months and acomplished all this [:-] Wow! Do you sleep, work, eat :)
|
RE: Sig Ryan STA
LOL . Maekju, sleeping is over rated...http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ngue_smile.gif
|
RE: Sig Ryan STA
I'm with Vincent on the sleep. VJ, how about weighing everything prior to painting so we can see what that Klass Kote adds. I am doing the same with the Stits. Just curious.
|
RE: Sig Ryan STA
I can do that, just keep in mind I will only be painting the fuse for now. I'll weigh the wing later then add the two together.
Oh almost forgot, I had to go to the LHS after work today to pick up some supplies for my Ryan, and somehow a new kit followed me to my truck! (Sig Spacewalker 1/4 scale) I hate when they do that....http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...wink_smile.gif |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
Hey VJ,
What engine do you have in mind for the 1/4 SW? I have been looking at these long and hard for a while. Wanted the 1/3 but I am running out of room for planes that big. The 1/4 looks like a better size and I have a new DLE-30 engine looking for a home. I may have enough paint left over to paint it as well;). Later!! Anthony |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
Anthony,
I've been eyeing the new DLE-35 which has some real nice features like the angled spark plug and rear exhaust. I need to look over the plans and see if it will fit. |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
I will fondle the DA-35 on Friday!<div>

RE: Sig Ryan STA
Awesome work Vincent! I can't wait to get stuck into my Golden Age Models 1/4 scale Ryan STA kit.
|
RE: Sig Ryan STA
Have fun on Friday Gary and don't forget your credit card! Is the DA-35 available yet? Maybe you can be our roving reporter and snap a few shots of it and post here....
Thank you Jymster, here's wishing you success in your build....and above all have fun with it! Now that the fuse has been completed (awaiting paint) my attention has turned to the cowl. Had to do the normal prime and sand to fix a few irregularities. I will also have to add some panel lines to it before it gets painted. The cowl has quite a bit of detail on it as well. |
RE: Sig Ryan STA
Congrats on your purchase ! The 1/4 Sig SW II builds in to an excellent airframe.

RE: Sig Ryan STA
