It's suprising how long it takes to drill a few holes in ribs when you do it out of sequence....anyway it's done and I'll be sure to drill the second set of ribs for the right wingusinga drill press. Aileron leading edge has been clamped and ready to receive its ribs. You can also see in the last photo where I havephoto copiedthe wing tip from the plans and have glued it to a piece of MDF. I will cut the profile of the wing tip giving me a perfect jig to clamp the balsa laminations.

What amazes me is the quality of the wood and the well thought out engineering of this kit. Compared to whatI see in todays arfs this is light years ahead. Would this be like back to the future? http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...eeth_smile.gifI hope SIG would consider making this one again.

+1 raptureboy, I couldn't agree more. So far the wood has been super and the fuse is rock solid if built properly. Some nights you get lots accomplished, others...not so much. I guess that's to be expected in any build, but hey any progress is good right? Tonight's photo is of the jig that I made for the wing tips whichI completed this evening.Guess you can now tell what kind of night tonight was!

Couple of early pictures tonight. First photo shows the future locations of the Robart hinges. Their will be four on each aileron and two on each flap. I am in the process of gluing in the additional blocking necessary for this style hinge to have. The second photo shows the four 1/4" x 1/16" balsa strips which will make-up the wing tip. I soaked the strips in water for about 45 minutes and then put them on this jig to dry. Tomorrow I will glue each piece together making one solid piece. For tonights preliminary bending only two clamps were needed.

Funny what we in this hobby get excited about, I got up at 4:00 am just to glue the wing tip laminationsthat was drying all night in the jig. I released the clamps around 10:30 am and as you can see it held itsshape in the jig perfectly. When placed on the plans it should be a perfect fit. Should look like a million bucks with some minor sanding...

Side Notes:

1. I took a piece of scotch transparent tape and laid a strip of it down on the jig in the event glue dripped from the laminations. Thispreventsyou from bonding your wing tip to the jig.
2. After removing the clamps but <u>before</u> removing your wing tip from the jig, make an index mark on your wing tip, it will aide you in proper alignment when fitting to the wing.

That's pretty cool there VJ, but too much work for me. I too use water buta little differenet in the method, I use magnets over the plans.

Ah yes the advantages of the magnetic build board. One day I'll break down and buy one! But building the jig was very theraputic at least give me that http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ular_smile.gif....

Next on the agenda was to attatch a 3/32" balsa wing tip to the chord line of rib W-4. After measuring where the chord line was, I had to attach the wing tip perfectly squareto this line. I suppose thier are many ways to accomplish this, buthere is the wayI chose to do it. I hung the wing off the build table, using a square kept it in the position that I was looking for, it was easy to do. (Also visible in the 1st photo are the hinge blocks that I glued on.)

Only got in one flight before it started to rain http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ngry_smile.gif. So I went home and started to sheet the top of the leading edge with 2" x 3/32" sheeting. If anyone asks you what you want for your birthday or the holidays, you can't go wrong if you ask for clamps...

Gosh, I can't wait to get started on my Ryan.  Only problem is I need to buy one.  And that's not the only problem, I need to finish my Cub first!  RATS!

Beautiful lamination on the wing tips! Something magical about pulling the part off the form and it holding its curve.

Your really making progress there VJ. I almost bought a set of plans for a 1/4 scale this weekend at a meet. I went to the Golden Age air Museum here in Pa for a 3 day RC event for planes from 1941 and older.
http://www.goldenageair.org/index.htm It's a great place and they are a group of dedicated volunteers helping to preserve the early days of aviation. Here are my 2 entrys, I have smoke on the Sterman and I want to install some in my Ryan.

Raptureboy, that looks like a wonderful museum I bet you had a great time there. You mentioned that you almost bought a 1/4 scale plan, was it for a Ryan or some other type of aircraft? Stearman is really beautiful, can't quite read what the name ison the cowl. I would love to go on the WACO ride!

Well, i've tried to add a picture of my ryan stm 8 times now but the connection keeps dropping so maybe later. Thanks Vincent, it was a great day and only one mishap, one guy forgot to attach his wing struts on his Mr Mulligan and the wing folded on lift off.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../sad_smile.gifYou can't preflight enough. Yes the plans were for a Ryan Sta, I should have bought them for $10 but oh well. The nose art is of my mom from the 40's made for me by Callie Graphics. She was an airplane inspector at Brookly field in Mobile Ala, when she was 19 and was featured in Ken Burns movie THEWAR a few years ago. The good Lord willing we will celebrate her 90th birthday next March. Guess what arrived at my back door today. A brand new Jet 12"disc sander that I've been eyeing for quite awhile. This will be a welcome addition to my workshop. Compared to my 6" disc sander that had a cheap wobbly aluminum table with a not so accurate miter gage, I'll be in sanding heaven!

There is nothing wobbly on that one! I was surprised at how big it was when mine arrived. The wind out of the port is like a leaf blower. My Ryobi one always threw dust in my face as I sanded. This one leaves no trace of dust on the part / table. It all gets sucked up by the internal hampster wheel fan and shot out of the exhaust port. Your filter on the port will work perfect!
