RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
hey guys,
the engine i mentioned being donated to me a week or two back isn't a cox brand, but is a fox brand instead. it's the .19 size. is it good for much? elad |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
reDeal:
I don't like Fox engines, but a lot of people do. That 0.19 is probably fitted with a lapped piston, and as such it requires castor oil in the lube. I have to admit, with proper lubrication and no mistreatment you'll never wear it out. But I don't like Fox engines. A lot of people love them. Being honest about it, I thought Duke Fox was one big rectum, and even so I have run many Fox engines. But not happily, only when they were the best engines for the job. Use your 0.19 on a properly sized sport plane, you'll be happy with it. Bill. PS: I don't like Fox engines. Haw. wr. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
I love my Eagle 2. I've got a lot of planes, but I like the way the Eagle will fly at a very slow scale like speed.
Has a Thunder Tiger .36 2 stroke. Plenty of power. But my dream engine for this plane would be the new Saito 40 four stroke. It weighs 10 oz. (same as the TT 36) and has a great power to weight ratio. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Turn it into a 3D plane. :D

RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Sincraft, Listen to Bill. He gave you the correct information. Once you get it right, leave it alone! Don't let any "expert" tinker with it and mess it up. You don't need every lat "R" out of that engine. I always run mine a little on the rich side, but with good transition from low to high needle.
ORIGINAL: William Robison Sincraft: Get it running at full speed, peak the HS needle. Down to idle, pinch the fuel line. Adjust the LS needle until the pinch gives a slight rise in rpm before falling off with the pinch. Go back to full and set the HS where you normally have it for flight. Now back to idle for a moment, then go to full. If the transition is now clean, leave it alone. More probably it will sag a little, so open the LS a bit and recheck the high speed - the two needles will interact a bit - and recheck the transition. Can be a bother to get it right, but once it's there you might never have to touch it again, unless you make a large change in the fuel. Bill. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Elad, This is getting scary, but I agree with Bill, here, too. When I was a kid, flying control line stunt, a Fox 35 was was a good engine. That was 40 plus years ago. I don't think they have kept up with the times. I'd suggest putting it on a test stand and run it up. If it works well, find an airframe and install it. If not, just add it to your collection.

RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Bill dont like fox engines I got that part- dont call me slow
tom, just cause you look like his twin you dont have to agree with him so much, unless it makes your moms happy LOL LOL dale- Fox engines have NOT kept up with the times- back when a good day was when you got your ignition motor running before sunset and actualy flew Fox was one of the best. today you can take almost any OS engine out of the box put it on a plane run a tank of fuel through it and fly dependably. some brands take more time to break in ,it is all amatter of choice My preferance is Saito even with the breakin time they seem to ME to have more power in any given size. OS engines seem to run better right out of the box than others. my advice is to leave the FOX on the shelf until you get a real good understanding of why they are different. they are good motors if treated like they should be go fly some more so we can hear some more stories |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
I love gas powered. :) I like fueling. I like flipping. I like tweaking. I love it all. When I anticipate or yearn to fly, I think about getting my engine running..and then running it full blast on the ground for a few seconds, and then feeling the power it has at it's old idle setting after warming up. My engine is MY engine. That's what I used to like about many other sports I was involved in. Golf, Mountain biking etc. Your equipment was YOUR equipment. That's why when I finally choose my 4 stroke for this bipe and the plane leading up to the bipe...it will be a choice I will stick with and back 100% after I figure it all out. However I am allowed to pick on my engine when it acts up,...as it is MY engine. Kinda like cutting on your family memebers. Only YOU are allowed to do that, you wife/girl can't do that. :)
STEALING UM, ROBBIN' SOME, for the advice on the Glasses. I've been feeling like this sport is MISSING something. I think that is it. I want to be able to see my plane better, and ESPECIALLY when I can't tell if it is now banked to teh right or the left hehe. Important when it's just above the horizon and diving down. Confidence in my manuvers has saved my arse many times. I have to train my brain to disregard what I THINK I see and realize that I didn't really push that way it's going the right way. Doing the opposite could cause an airplane to Auger into the ground. And I've seen that too many times to want it to happen to me...at least not just yet. Those glasses should really help things out. I like my shades, but they are more for style and for blocking glare. Even in cloudy days there is glare, but when I wear my shades it darkens thing too much. I never thought about wearing those. :) Thanks again. I might even make my eagle a double engine plane and dedicate it to you bill HA. Of course, I won't use fox engines either. :) Tom, nobody touches my plane. Earlier this year when I was desperate to get flying and get things working..I let a couple guys fiddle. The one guy got things going, the other messed things up but helped me understand somethings and also took my plane up for me when I was too chicken to solo. I called him my instructor as I thought he was going to be there often like he was last year, but I finally got fed up with not being able to fly so I took off and taught myself the hard way. HAR. Last year my bro solod for the first time, and about 4 - 5 flights later he was taking off and landing for me until I got the guts to do it myself. There was no aborting takeoffs and landings. Usually I just got nervous in flight and shoved the controller into his stomache. THat allowed me to regain my composure and take the controller back. Usually I would just say LAND cause I was afraid I would lose it all. He does and always has been very good at landing. Even his takeoffs look easy and straight compared to many others out there. His flying needs work, although he's good. He is too dangerous. I anticipate a serious crash within his next few times out. He is not happy unless he is pushing the envelope and more. I'm all for that, but at minor steps. :) Correction: after that someone did touch my plane. I was polite the first time but the next time I warned him he would be drawing back a bloody stump as I take my personal space serious. Like I explained to his friend, I don't grab his wife's breasts...don't walk over and pick up my plane and start molesting it either. HA. hehehe S |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
OK,
I got it that the fox needs castor oil for the lube instead of synthetic. My .46, in the eagle, likes synthetic better. And it's even finickey about the brand it likes. Other than needing castor oil (you said, I need a good understanding about "Why it's different") why is it different? The .19 won't fly a plane the size of the eagle, so it'll have to go in some small sport plane. I'll need more flying experience to handle that. Will the fox need a long break-in time? There's no paperwork with the engine. AND no muffler. I won't like that. freeDeal |

RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Bill,
Thank you for the information and the pics. Your Eaglet is a nice looking little plane and has a cool color scheme. Well, I better get going. I told my plant manager I was going to try to phase myself out of the factory. I've been looking for land on which to build a business for myself. There's lots of options, a limited supply of land in good locations and the owners are pricing it as if they don't really want to sell it. $250k for 2.75 acres. ha I'll find something I can use for much less. I'll have to, to get any. c u later, elad |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Good Luck in your venture, Dale.

RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Elad,
Give me 1/2 that money and I'll get you 4x the space in a good area for trucking etc. What is it you are looking to do? Are you hiring? I would be able to do a cost/benefit analysis for you that would prove my worthyness 10 fold. I always have been able to do that at all the 'real' jobs I have had. :) (shameless plug above. This is not the opinions or beliefs of RCU or its affiliates) :D S |

RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Barron, you're up early this morning. Did you get any of the good flying weather that we've enjoyed the past few days?
|
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Stink Wrap,
Thanks for the shameless plug. Cost analysis is always a good idea. Basically, I analyse the cost of the land and then add the cost of constructing the office building myself during my days off from the factory. If I have 6 months earnings left over in my savings account I'll go for it. I figure that if I accomplish nothing else, I have property that's been improved enough to doule my investment if anyone wants to buy it after I'm done there. At that price, I think I might even be selling my efforts short. I have a couple of things in mind. Primarily, I'm giong to make and sell portable buildings. I'll get enough land to also house (in the future) a few other businesses that I can lease out. Secondarily, I want to retail small items (smaller than portable buildings anyway.) Hobby items are what I have in mind. Telescopes that I make, cb radios, auto stereos, rc items, Eagle II ARF and a 4 Stroke Engine (what a sloppy way to get on topic huh?) I have found other real estate at lower prices than the $250k. Whatever land I get will have only one number ahead of the comma, per acre. Truck stops down here need 5 1/2 acres minimum. One gave $40k per acre, then spent $2m getting all set up. Both of the recently opened truck stops have approched me about moving my cb shop onto their property. My shop is located just across the State line where State law allows me to operate without obtaining a TV technician license. The 2 truck stops who extendeed the invitation are both in my home State, which won't allow the same. Typical of my luck! #*^*@! Why not just get the license? Long frustrating story! Oh well. It rained here yesterday and turned cool. Today is sunny, cool enough to make condensation on the windows and to see your breath. No frost yet, but cool enough that I should bring in my Ivy plant and start making a small shelter for my Bonsai stuff. Happy Thanksgiving, See ya later dudes, freeDeal-Dale-elad-dud |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Elated:
If you're not stuck on staying where you are, land is a lot less expensive around I-10 here. Not sure of what it's really going for, but it is a lot less than $250K/acre. Made a fair piece of change back in '73-75 servicing CB (Children'a Band) radios, mostly in peaking and doing high power modifications, and replacing protector diodes when a numbskull reversed the power leads. Can't forget wiring up Turner mikes too. Didn't think there was any money in it anymore. All the best in your new affair, anyway. Bill. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Bill,
The "Children" say it stands for Continually Buying or Constantly Broke. ha The last I knew they also liked Super Modulation modifications and "Private" channels. I got some books that had a few lines about high power boosting, but I couldn't make heads or tails about it. A lot of CBers brought me their radios saying some tech had it up to 50 watts. My meter showed most of them doing 12 to 15 watts. I'm guessing their "tech" was using a meter that showed p-to-p wattage instead of average watts, or maybe he simply 'adjusted' his meter to show watt ;) he wanted it to. One of my customers told me his cb was walking all over a trucker who was running a 100 watt kicker. Evidently he told that storyon the air to a bunch of CBers in my community. That story brought me a lot of peak & tune jobs. I know a tech out in San Fransisco who keeps 8 to 10 techs working for him. It's not that way here. There's fewer than 6 shops within a 75 mile radius who do well to stay in bizz using one tech. You're right, there's not much in it now, especially in a small town like mine, but it can be just those few extra bucks you don't want to bypass if you can get 'em while you're there anyway. That's the way we have to think down here. About a year ago I took a trip that crossed I-30. There was a sign saying land for sale. The place was sort of remote to my way of thinking, but I asked about the price anyway and to the best of my memory I think they wanted $20k for an acre. shooooooooo And, I guess I'll just stay around here. I have no debts, except the usual utilities. If I didn't mind the "starting over" drag I could sell my house, buy a bit of bare land nearby to build and retire on when I get too sick or old to work, and use remainder of the dough that the homestead sold for to strike it rich in some boomtown. I guess I'd rather live out the rest of my life around the nit wits I know rather than living around nit wits I don't know. Maybe everyone doesn't see things like this old nit wit. ha See ya layer, Deflated ;) |

I wonder whats the deal......? A lot of the time I log onto this forum from my yahoo e-mail page where I get the notification of a new message. When I do a reply sometimes it goes through and sometimes I get a message saying the msg. won't go through because it's being sent through some domain that won't allow it to be sent. It wouldn't be so bad, but the msg. is lost and I have to re-type the whole thing. That's bad 'cause I'm so long winded. ha elad |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Elad:
I did manage to get 50 watts out the back of a Midland SSB rig, but that was right on the edge. When I put some modulation on it the final popped. Got it reliable about 40 watts input, a little over 100W PEP. Most of the SSB rigs would sustain 12-15 watts carrier, the AM rigs seldom went much over 7 or 8. Also built and sold a lot of small linear amps, most with rx preamps also. Most powerful transistor amp I ever made was a KW rig, circuit from the Radio Amateur's Handbook, the transistors alone ran right at $1K to buy. RCU, and lost posts. When you've finished typing, highlight the whole thing with your mouse, and press (Control)C. Then, if the post is lost in one domain or another, reopen the reply box and press (Control)V. There it all is again, copied from the "Clipboard." Saves a lot of typing. Bill. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Good Weather?????? Heck no!!!!! [sm=angry.gif] Man we got 5" of puff on Sunday with winds 15-30 Mph. I'm looking forward to my first ski fly on my Pizazz but those crazy and drunk weather men (are they really men??) don't know how to forcast CALM. Maby I should become a weather man at least the goal isn't to be correct.
Well since were kit building last Thursday I got a Cub from one guy who stopped at the field and gave this thing to me. Well it WAS a static display only model. I'm in the process of converting it to RC. the covering was alreaghting coming off the wing. I have to hinge all the surfaces and recover. Thinking about a OS .30 in the nose according to GP it is a 20 sized plane. She's real cute!! |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Well Barron, our weather turned to crap, too. I got up at 4:00 this morning and it was 43 Degrees. Now at 11:30 PM it's 21 with 20 mph winds. Forgot to mention that the ground turned white, today, too.
It's definately building season!!! |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Bill,
I'll try the highlight text, ctrl c, then crtl v on this post. I did look for the text in the temp file once upon a time, after the post was lost, but naturally there was nothing there. Thanks for the tip. Yep that should save me from re-typing and re-thinking. Re-thinking is the hard part. ha In my experience with SSB rigs I could get them up to about 25 w on SSB. Most of the AM radios (Uniden & Cobra) I could get up to 12 to 15 w. while modulating the carrier That is except for the really cheaply made ones. Most of the time I would cut the limiting diode or just max out the control pot for modulation. Usually that gave 125% or would actually go completely off the scale of the modulation meter. It always amazed me thet the distortion wasn't too bad to remove intelligibility from the voice. Heck that part of the meter may have been extremely innacurate though. I callibrated my watt meter with a Tectronics 100mHz oscilloscope. That might not have been accurate either. I sold a lot of store bought amps but never built any. The only building of amps I ever did was when I made VFOs down on 80m and 40m. I made one that put out a whopping 140mW on 40m and talked to people (CW) within a 5 state radius in the daytime, and to Canada during the early evening hours. It was juat a tiny little bit drifty, so I had to maintain an exact speed to keep it on frequency while monitoring the freq with my main rig. ha I wound the coils on plastic medicine bottles instead of using torroid cores. And I boiled them after getting them near enough to the dseired freq. I think the medicine bottle cores were more stable, and using the rat shack NPO caps helped a lot too. Those NPOs aren't available down here any more. I tried turning that xmitter into a xcvr by switching in an offset capacitor, but I never got that part of the circuit to work right. The freq. spread was always too great no matter what I tried. Maybe the switching transistor's internal capacitance was interracting. RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Dale:
You've not said anything about your training. Did you fly this weekend? We had good wx over here, really pleasant. I didn't go out, too many projects running late. You'd think I, being retired, would have all the time in the world. I'm sure you've heard that the time required expands to exceed the time available? Never had any interest in QRP, and never did much mobile except on 10 meters. I always tried to set the max modulation around 90%, when Joe Schnoe put his power mike on and overdrove the thing the splatter would wipe out six channels on each side, otherwise. Building linears was good money, cost about $30 and 45 minutes to make a tx only 100w unit, sold a lot for $150. Add a rx amp for $35 more. And the most expensive thing about the rx amp was the circuit board. When I said "Children's Band I was being polite. I'm sure you know it really stood for "Cheap B*****d." I haven't done any CB or ham operations for years - the CB descended to the gutter, and the hams all became appliance operators. "My Yaesu is better than your Icom." Got tired of it. RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Bill,
I had 3 - 12 hour appointments with CSP this past weekend, so I couldn't fly. This coming weekend I guess I can fly if the wx is cooperative and my instructor's sked is good for it. I never found a source for parts for linears that cheap. I ordered replacement finals from RF Parts and they cost around $50.00 for a matched pair. (Again, if memory serves right. It's been a couple of years since I looked at their catalog.) It seems like most of the stuff I ordered was priced so high for the parts that I'd spend more to get all the necessary pieces to build from scratch than to just buy new. BUMMER I listened around 80m a lot when I made direct conversion receivers. A few of those hams sounded like channel 19. That's why I threw my mikes away whenever I got a different rig. All I ever wanted to use was my MFJ memory keyer. I did use a mike on 2m with the home folks. I read after Doug DeMaw and Wes Hayward extensively. I tried building rigs, but the plans always seemed to use enough parts that weren't available to make the project an exercise in frustration. I didn't know how to make the right substutions except for the transistors. I was always amazed that the splatter wasn't that bad in the Cobra/Uniden radios I dealt with. (Although one night I heard an operator wipe out ALL 40 channels. I asked him to keep operating while I hooked up a 120 channel CB to see just how far he was splattering. He shut it down his JB 12 and other foot warmers and I could barely hear him transmit at all. I should have hooked up the radio before saying anything to him. ha) If the operator used a power mike I tuned the radio while using it. A lot of the guys used the RK-56 mikes which were FAR from a power mike. Wx is nice today. Sunny & cool. It rained Sat.& Sun. & turned cool enough to bring in my Ivy plant. I guess I can throw together a shelter for my Bonsai plants in just a little while to keep the soil in the pots from freezing. If they survive the winter I might just put them back into the ground and abandon the hobby except for the Juniper my #1 son gave me. Or maybe not. I'm spending my days off making a new 80mm x 400mm refractor and remodeling the mount and tripod into something more steady. I'll be doing more of a land search in just a little while. I have a mulching kit coming and will put it on the mower Thursday. My grandsons are visiting this week. TIME? What's that? I've heard a lot of retirees say that had more free time when they were employed full time than since retirement. I'll probably never know. ha I did the control C and the control V. The control V didn't bring up the clipboard contents, but I opened it manually and the message ws saved there. I'll tryagain or try something a bit different. I better run. Daylight doesn't last very long this time of year. Later, elaDed |

Barron, When it gets cold around here, I stay inside, only going out to get to work or for the daily snow blowing ritual. Being so close to Lake Michigan, it doesn't get as cold here as you, but the lake puts out moisture and boy do we get the snow. It hasn't started in earnest yet, but it won't be long.
Don flies in the winter. I stay home and try to get something done on my models. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Hmm, yes these forums are rather...odd. I receive notification in my regular email about a message being updated. But not for others. I see no difference in the messages as I started neither of them. I would prefer to never get any more notifications. I even shut something like that off once but still receive them. Sigh. Also, the cookies expire way to soon. I want to log in once and THAT'S IT. HA.
Elad, GO FLYING! Yes, that was a strange way to incorporate the EAGLE II - 4 STROKE into this message that has obviously taken on a life of its own, mutated twice, had three step children sue it for intellectual rights, and had kids of their own...do the same. :) Anyway, you get my point HA. Flew today. 10-12 mph wind as usual. After two tanks my hands were starting to cramp up. I was SUPPOSED to be 49 and partly sunny today, however the weather drunks screwed that one up and it was more like ALL clouds and about 43 at best. Chilly to say the least. I am still having a finiky time with my Enya 40ss. I have to land with trim and even then I am either too fast or too slow it seems to have a 'perfect' 3 point landing with no bouncies. I had two really nice ones today, and prefer to land at a higher speed as the bouncies don't seem to occur and if the wind drops off then I don't drop out of the sky. SO I have resorted to trimming my elevator a little downwards on my final leg or somewhat prior and landing with trim. Throttle all the way down and half trim puts me JUST a bit slow. Then I slowly adjust up and down from there to bring her in nicely. Still trying to figure out why one little throttle click seems to change it from a nice idle (with half trim) to wanting to rpm much faster down the runway and faster than joggin speed. Confusing. It works though, and gives me alot of power. I was flying with only a few notches of throttle today into the wind, using more elevator I was capable of continuing my flight and probably could have done so on the same tank for 20+ minutes if not more. But, I like to fly my Eagle like a sport plane. :) SCREAMING through the trees. Ooooo ALSO, OK GUYS I NEED ADVICE. Xmas is coming up and I want to prep my wishlist so that those that give a damn can buy me my toys. :) I really think I want a totebox with all the schtuff. I have only driven out to the airfield and forgotten things twice, of which I made the best of things and nothing critical (transmitter ie). But I am starting to realize the need for a all in one box with all my stuff in it. That said, I am also looking forward to my NEXT plane. I am currently building that (what I found out is a pattern) bipe. That is way beyond my level as I haven't even flown with Ailerons yet. :( SO, I don't want to get an OS 91 four stroke for this bipe if I am not going to be able to use it. UNLESS someone can tell me of a good low wing/taildragger trainer that would use the OS91 four stroke with my current skillset in mind. Keep in mind I am a good pilot, and probably won't have much trouble flying or taking off...however I don't seem to be the best at landing yet. The aircraft carrier top we land on is small but I seem to miss it more than I hit it. That said, should I forgo the purchase of a OS 91 4 stroke for my bipe until I am ready for that one...and move to something else??! Tom and Don had both mentioned the Tiger II. I was also looking at the Tiger 60. I REALLY want a 4 stroke, don't know why really, but I do. HA. AND that said, what are my options? My biggest hangup is that I see the 70 4 strokes are almost the same price as the 90. SO I will probably drop to an OS 60 LA. Any suggestions? MY wishlist: -keep it fourstroke and have enough power to have fun while still being able to use it in a future plane. -traildragger/low wing to step up to flying the bipe. -Less than 350 total! :) Tom - When it is cold outside, don't you break out the skis and go flyign? I don't udnerstand, I thought you were hardcore! :( I am already planning on making skis for the Eagle. They are going to have a bit of a shock absorbsion system AND I am looking to make a device that will allow to me 'clip' off my current wheels and 'clip' on my skis. :) I'm such the little mechanical engine. Money is tight so that will also be one of the things that limits me. At first they may be ugly, but I anticipate making something nifty soon. If the people at the hardware stores don't kick me out after I paroose their stuff too long. HA. S S |

SinfulWitchcraft:
Screaming through the trees is great. And requires the application of witchcraft, thus getting you your latest name change. Without witchcraft you go screaming to the trees,... And that's it. A thump ending the scream, and possibly a bit of disturbed brush noise as the engine alone continues its flight for a short distance. Or have you somehow trained the trees to whip themselves out of the way? Explanation, please. Haw. Maybe. Bill. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Sinful:
The Tiger 60 is a good plane, or the Venture 60. The Tiger will be marginally the easier flier for a low time pilot. Engine? Forget the OS, the FS 91 Surpass II is $300, the Saito FA-91 is just $240. A lot more engine for $60 less. And the Saito is 4 ounces lighter to boot. And while it wont be the world's best match, you could use it on the Tiger or the Venture. I'd be inclined to get a "40 size" Stick for it, or maybe a 60 size if I wanted to be a little more civilized. Bill. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
WillySon,
I am quite adapt at screaming THROUGH the trees. On our final approach, when the wind is JUST right.. we actually don't have a crosswind. We instead get a horribly strong wind that negates our ability to land where the nice approach is. Thus we must with 50 foot trees being approximately 100 feet from the edge of the runway which is only 60 feet from a WALKING trail! If the AMA saw our airfield, they would yank their sponsorship SO fast. BUT from what I hear, we already supposedly do not recognize the AMA for a number of reasons. Whatever. SO, on final there are two bigger trees that if I go between, I find I get a nicer landing and do not overshoot. Which would take me to the 'nice' area. However the nice area has huge grass and large ruts. The 'nice' area is nice on approach because you can keep it low as you come in..if you have the option with the wind...but you certainly do NOT want to land there hehe. You will at best rip your gears away and flip the plane violently. SO yes, I actually have to fly between two trees. Sometimes I am well above, but many times I actually would clip them if I were right or left of them just a bit. Then I have to land it on a 26' wide by 150' runway (paved). The 150 part isn't very hard, especially if you have the 'nice' approach. But the 26' gets a bit tricky. ESPECIALLY with our normal horribly crosswind. I've learned to run backwards very well as I dodge my airplane crabbing toward me HA. Also...there is a field that the US government owns (for what we do not know yet), and there are a few 30-50 foot trees sparsly placed throughout there. Totaling about 6-10 of em. I like to fly low, cut knife edges the best I can with just rudder and elevator, and pylon between them. :O I did a figure eight today around two of them today. :) EDIT: bill we should be pm'n HA. Ok, so get the 91 4 stroke and stick it on the Tiger II??!??! It says its range is UP TO a .75 4 stroke. AND, the OS Surpass 2 4 stroke is only 239 at tower hobbies. IS that a good price? And WHERE do I get the Saito for that price?!?! I REALLY like those saitos the more I read about them. :) I would surely like the black one with the gold tops. OOOOOOOOOO BABY! EDIT x2: Bill... 91S GOLDEN KNIGHT AAC W/MUFFLER:EE [SAIE091SGK] by SAITO ENGINES Category: EAB-Engines, 4 Cycle, Airplane Price: $264.95 FA-91S [SAIE091S] by SAITO ENGINES Category: EAB-Engines, 4 Cycle, Airplane Price: $239.95 O.S. SkinRash:
I don't know where you found that price for the OS, Tower Hobby's 2004 catalog lists several versions, but the cheapest one is their order number OSMG0896 FS-91 Surpass II, at $299.99 each. The FS-70 S-II is $249.99 - did you slip a line when you looked it up? The FA 91 Saito has a reguar price of $239.95 from Horizon, the black version is $25 more. Even if I've made an error I'd still spend the $10 more for the Saito. Or $35 if you want the GK version. My Saitos are mostly mix-and-match, however all but one have the black cylinder, whether the particular engine has a black case or not. Bill. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Actually the OS FS 91 Surpass II at tower's website shows it for 229.00 in stock. :)
I think I want the Saito anyway, especially the Golden Knight (black) Oooooooo! I was thinking of going with even the 100 but I know I am pushing the power mark and am seeing many posts about warranty service with this model in these forums. That said, I am still confused about the differences that I see at horizon hobbies website. Seems like Muffler is the only difference between the two prices. I need that right eheh? Also, is this going to be ok in a Tiger60? I think you said yes but I just want to make sure. I'm actually excited about this engine. Not to mention, the BLACK KNIGHT muahhahahahaha MUAHHAHA MMMMMMMMMUAHHA (COUGH) sorry.. S |

The Saito Fa 91 will fly the Tiger 60 without a problem, you might be well advised to put the R/E servos in the tail to decrease balance weight needed. A little harder build, but I really think you would be happier with the Venture 60. It's a little bigger. I'm partial to the "Stick" designs - have a big block Saito on an UltraStick 120, for the 91 I'd be highly tempted to get the US 60. It is an ARF, though, you might not like that. Horizon even mentions a Saito 100 on the US 60. Here's two pictures of my Saito/US. Bill. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
hmmm you've given me much food for thought. Thanks.
I am still trying to figure out the different model numbers on horizons website. They have things wtih muffler J and muffler E but don't explain what the differences are , especially the differences for the price. Very ambigious website. As for the OS 91 Surpass...like I said it is on tower for 229.00 and is available. But for the extra 50+ bux, is it worth the Saito black? That is my question. I think I want the Saito anyway because all the OS engines I see and hear seem to run underpowered to be honest. Or maybe they are just that silent. But they always have to me, a seemingly SLOW flight for the size they are. I've heard and seen different 4 strokes and they sound better and seem to fly more powerfully than the OS. Anyway...any more info you have would be helpful bill and thanks so far! Like I said, Horizon carries the Saito..I just don't udnerstand the differences that are on there. S |

I don't know what the EE and K are either, but my guess is they are the revision code for the current models they are selling. What that is, Saito will make a revision to the FA-80 series, for example. Suppose the pre-mod was a "J" series, then the revised engine would have a "K" stamped on the engine lug. So if that is the case, it would indicate the current 91 GK was an "EE" revision, and the plain metal engine is a "K" model. The current muffler is the same as shown in my picture of the US engine, no longer the sleek tube of the earlier engines. Whether the black is worth the extra $25 is up to you. As a matter of course I will enamel and bake the cylinder when I pull one off, if it's not already black. I said I had one still in plain metal, that one hasn't yet been apart. And I do have one genuine "Golden Knight." So think it over, it's your money, your time, your airplane, and intended for your plesure. Bill. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
If money is a consideration, you don't need the Golden Knight. As far as I know, the Saito motors are the same, with only the color being different. If having the black cyliner and gold valve covers is worth the money to you, go for it.
I have two OS 91 4/strokes. They are good motors. If I had it to do over, I'd buy Saito. To me, they are worth the extra money. With your current building dillemas, I still reccomend the Tiger 60. The Goldberg instructions are very good. It would be an easy build compared to your current project. If the plans don't shoow how to make it a tail dragger, I'll walk you through it when the time comes. I'm sure the Venture 60 is a good plane. Being up here in the now frozen sticks, I've never seen one. I know Bruce Tharp has quality products. |

Well, That wasn't supposed to post yet. I wanted to ask you, Bill. How does the Venture fly compared to the GP Sportster 60?
I've been thinking about getting the Sporster to put one of my OS 91's in, as I have the 40 size now and like the way it flies. If the Venture flies better, I might be interested. I like nice smooth maneuvers, not the 3D stuff. I don't need unlimited vertical. Here's a pic of my Saito. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Tom:
Hmmp. Looks more like a Monocoupe than a Saito. Though I do see a couple familiar rocker boxes. Familiar with the Four*40? The Venture is what the Four*60 was supposed to be. Bruce Tharpe designed the '40, the '60 was someone else trying to emulate his work. Didn't do as good a job as Bruce himself, with the Venture. So consider an enlarged and even more civilised Four*40, you have the Venture 60. Comparing the Sportster series to the Venture is something on the order of comparing a Decathlon and an Extra. Both aerobatic, and both capable of flying the Aresti pattern and doing a good job of it. But it's a lot easier with the Extra. The Sportster is the Ford Thunderbird, no, let's not be that harsh. The Sportster is the Corvette CR-5, the Venture is the Ferrari F-40. Any one of them is more than sufficient for making circles around the air patch, When you want to get fancy in the manner you make the circles around the air patch, the Venture is simply the better tool. Or a well trimmed Ugly Stick. Bill. |
