RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
I had a kickass time today! Although I was only on little sleep, (and still am), I took off from work at around 3, got to the airfield around 4 and flew for over an hour. I did all kinds of crazy (yet controlled) things and everything felt very natural. The sun was shinning on the wing and I could actually see the red stripes on that black wing. Everything looked great, I noticed I had a smile on my face while I was flying...which is odd for me. Usually that means something is funny or I'm up to something ehhe.
Everything flew nicely. I think I had a bit of flutter yesterday if that's the proper term. THere is a small 1" hole in the tail and came apart from the last repair I noticed today. So I patched it with tape and everything flew great. Surprised my tail didn't rip off or explode...or worse, balloon up and cause me to death spiral. Anyway...the jitters were gone via the sun hitting the plane properly and the wind being only about 8 mph. Good times. :) Don't know how long this weather will hold out. Early fall, it was hot..then COLD...then rainy and COLD...then one week of warmer but windy/rainy..then COLD COLD COLD..now, it's like early fall is back. I'm confused. [sm=spinnyeyes.gif] to be honest, I am not sure what to do with it. I'm not sweating, and I'm not freezing..hmmmmmmmm. S |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
hey guys,
sounds like you're all holding things together better than me. but you know it seems that i recall saying it was going to be hard to find the runway saturday. WRONG!!! i found it a lot quicker than i thought. you guys didn't get a repairman with your planes and instructors??? well, i guess i am really blessed huh? i don't know if i'll be nervous next flight or not. when mechanics or electronics fail there isn't a lot of time for nerves unless you're 4 mistakes high. afternoons here are still tee shirt temperatures. they say it's going to get cooler in a few days and maybe rain. s, too bad about the auction, maybe the next one will go better for you. elad |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
The Eagle will fly again! But not today. Car broke down :( Gonna cost me big. Was VERY nice today but with all that I couldn't even make it in to work. I would have felt guilty if I went flying in the last hour or two of light so when I finally got home I figured I would spend time building.
HOPEFULLY we will see more days of good weather. I don't mind it being 'chilly' but NOT cold or hot. Wind sucks also. I guess that is a tall order, but only time will tell. I am going to go check the weather now. Elad, I am not sure if your instructor told you this or not, which I am sure he did. MAKE SURE you do a good pre-flight before every two flights. Especially in a rattling old Eagle. Not sure what your engine mount looks like but mine is made of wood bolted onto wood. If I flew 5 times in a row without checking something, I would surely have SOMETHING fall off or worse. Yesterday I was doing a preflight and noticed one of my engine mount bolts almost completely off. My muffler has come off twice this year (only held on by the rubber return hose on return so didnt lose it at least) And several other things have vibrated almost off or completely off. I remember the on year I was riding my mountain bike back in the woods below the one air field on these trails. I just completed a major hill climb and was resting when I heard a plane fly overhead. Then I heard crashing through the trees. Not two feet from me fell someones wheel. The same size I needed to complete my Eagle. LOL. And now it sits on my model! LOL. Isn't that odd? But it made me realize, hey I betcha that guy is going to crash on landing. By the time I got up there, (cant go directly up) everyone was gone. I felt bad but hey what can ya do right? Still funny story to this day.. S |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
sin,
yep, my instructor even checks over the plane at the end of a day's flying sometimes. b4 we ever started lessons he told me he'd teach me about pre-flight checking, so that's covered for sure. it sounds like you could stand to go bike riding more often.. i'd suggest you wear a high quality hard hat. some pilot might drop a 4 stroke engine or something. ha sorry about the car breaking down, and the unexpected expense. real bummer. my daughter recently had a $2k repair bill. maybe yours won't be so much. i won't be able to check out the repairs to the eagle and go flying again for another week and a half. no tellling how the weather will be by then. we'll see. elad |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Elad, You have a TOP NOTCH instructor! I had one that took my brand new OS 40 and leaned it out to full power. The thing was never right from the very beginning. Worn out the very first day.
|
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Tom that's my fear with my current engine. Last year when my brother and I with very limited knowledge and experience finally got my engine started, we were able to lean it out then back it off.
This year I had someone else fiddle with it, worked fine then someone else fiddled with it making sure the story I told about stalling and 'hard landing' wouldn't happen again. It seemed a bit lean so I retuned it but after that day never seemed to tune correctly. I lean it out until it stops whinning louder like you are supposed to but the SLIGHTEST bit too much and it will shut down. Then I try to back it off waiting for the whinning to lessen a bit denoting a decrease in rpm and a slightly rich running as you are supposed to...but I turn and turn and turn and nothing seems to happen so I just kinda guestimate. The engine idles very nicely and starts decently now, but when I go to take off it sputters very bad then finally 'catches' and that's every flight for me! Takes me 1/3 the runway just for it to catch then go throttle up. If I lean it out it seems to be running too lean and if I go full power if will stop. It's almost like I am stuck with this running like this at least for the first flight until it gets warmed up and gets some of that previous flights goop out. Each time I fly is a bit different also. If I cut the throttle all the way I can do a nice landing one day, then the next I have to land with throttle trim to keep it from coming in too hot. Other days I have to keep one notch up on the throttle and trim throttle almost all the way down. It's actually kinda fun fine tuning my landings like this. But hey, you'll have that I guess. I still think that this engine isn't perfectly tuned however and like I said I worry it was run too lean for too long. Anyway to find out how my engines health is? My compression is awesome, and the plane screams through the sky. I just have to deal with some crazyiness when it's on or near the ground. As long as it doesn't stall though, it's not a federal case. :) Elad, 2k bill!? OUCH. What was it may I ask? Transmission? Those front wheels drives and some 4x4's are expensive to fix a transmission I have been told. They told me it would be $170 which is alot less than I thought it would be. But the guy didn't seem very sure that was the problem. It's kinda like , well this is definetely what you need first (plugs, throttle body, tune up, oil change, wires, etc) Which is correct. Only time will tell. I just hope that's all it is and I kill two birds with one stone. The past due checkup/tune up and fixing this issue. S |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Sincraft, Sounds like too many cooks in the fire with your engine. I have an idea of what's wrong with your motor, but let's see if Don chimes in. He's the brains of the outfit.
My engines are tuned for reliability, not for every last rev. I usually go all year without messing with them. This year being the exception, with my 70 Surpass going bad. Don's gonna rebuild it for me before Spring. I have the parts already. I'm sure I didn't touch the needle on my Saito 50. What a sweet runner that is! |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
hey where do you get the saito's from? They are not at tower. Any suggestions?
thanks! S |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Sink Raft:
Horizon Hobby is the Saito importer. You can get them from most of the mail order sites except Tower/Great Planes/Hobbico. But most of them have the same prices as listed at Horizon. I will add that Horizon's service department is the best I've dealt with, in the hobby field. They have cemented my 4c choice to the Saito brand. Bill. PS: How about the latest rework on your username? Haw. wr. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Bill, I had to LOL when I read it!!!! FUNNY. Maybe Sincrash---oops--Sinbuilder--oops-- Sincraft won't, but he'll get over it.
Hey, Are you still getting flying weather? It's 28 degrees here, winds at 20 mph and a wind chill of 15. Looks like I'll be working on my Focke Wulf this weekend. Too cold for any flying. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Tom Frump:
Visualize me, as a small child, making a face and pointing at you. I have the air conditioning turned on here. I consider air temperature below 60F as unflyable. We might have three weekends in any given year that are that cold. I have told many people my servos don't work below 60F, some give me funny looks, but others ask where they can get some. Haw. Yes, I am a confirmed "LollyTwat." That term is more commonly heard starting with "Candy" but this is supposed to be family oriented, And being a lollytwat I have no logical reason for moving from SE Virginia to Maryland when I retired, but that lasted less than a year, then I came here to Florida. And If we can play with Sinking Cash's name we can play with yours also, can't we? Visualize me, as a small child, making a face and pointing at you. I have the air conditioning turned on here. Just rubbiing it in. Haw again. Bill. |

Frill Robyourson. My furnace just kicked in. Does that count?
I swear, when I retire, I'm getting out of this frozen region. Summers up here are great, but they can have the rest. Burl has been laughing at my location too. He did say that he may come here for a visit. In the summer, of course. I have to look at it this way. More time to build. I like that part of the hobby/sport best, anyway. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Its a sin to be a crash builder HA HA
s - the saitos are really nice motors just remember to give them some break in time and they will last you a long time the 91 -150 -180 are some of the more powerful around the ys or the supercharged os have lots more power but costs lots more I have a saito a magnum and an os I like them all |

I have more hair than you. When I was in my initial growth spurt I grew so fast my head outran my hair and it all came out my chin. Hasn't caught up yet. Visualize me, as a small child, making a face and pointing at you. The tan airplane is fabric covered, it's about 20 years old. Still flies nicely. Bill. |

Skinflasher has Fridays off work, so he must be lost, or buried beneath his recently repaired car.
Edad mite be out flying as he live in the warm belt, too. Llib, I was just outside. My asphalt driveway is white! Looks like Nod and I will have to get our snowblowers ready for the coming season. Here's a pic of my old and lamented Faichild 24R. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
OMG. I miss 24 hours and BAM the thread takes on an completely different face. I alas, am not as witty as my elder fellow poster...however I must say..the humor in this thread was enough for me to literally LOL. Imagine if you will, coming in after 24 hours and seeing the play on words develop before my very eyes. :)
I'd post more and make a weak attempt at humor myself, but if you look at the time of this post you'd realize that the ability for me to post let alone stay awake is much like a miracle as I was up till 5am gluing and sanding. HA. Nope, no flying today tom. :( But tomorrow is going to be calm, and sunday even better. Or so those drunk *******s who call themselves weathermen say. :) Although I am kinda concerned about freezing something on my body. The temperature will only reach about 40 on sunday. But with the sun and a couple layers with one final thick layer of clothing, I bet I manage to stay out there attempting to start my most finiky engine for at least a couple hours. Anyway, talk with you guys tomorrow. Thanks for the humor. It's making the snot balls made up 99% of balsa less agonizing. HA S |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Skin Rash:
Waddaya mean late? It's evening, but still a couple hours before bed time! At least for we who are fixed well enough to quit working a "Nine to five." Or convinced someone to pay us not to. Anyway, hope you have an enjoyable time as your unmentionable body parts turn to ice and fall off. Haw. Bill (Or Yllib). |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Nothing of mine is going to fall off! I'm staying in the shop today! I sit in front of a heat duct, staying nice and warm.
Don, you have too much time on your hands!!! Can't you find something constructive to do, like working on your Mystery Ship? Sinbuilder, I thought you did your best work in the wee hours of the morning! |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Hey Sinkraft
you up yet ? go electric for winter flying get yourself a zagi you will love it no fuel no cold hands no fussy motors just hop out of the car fly jump back in while you charge it up go fly again |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
morning tom
im just leaving for home depot gotta replace a water heater today fit those retracts today have it ready for test flight tomorrow HA never Happen |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Cent Rack:
I think Ton O'Sun is calling you a "Lollytwat." And then talking about jumping out of his warm car and right back in. I admit I'm a Lollytwat, Don has just shown that he is one also. But you. You're the one going out putting the family jewels at risk. Seems to me you should be calling him the lollytwat, and he should call you an idiot for risking the possibility of never looking at a woman again with lust in your mind. Longing for former times, perhaps, but never again with lust. Haw. Why haven't we heard from Dilly-Daley? Bill. |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Don, you're up early. Retracts sound like more work than I'm up to. Thought more about building the ailerons and flaps.

I just met Don at Home Depot. We have a light dusting of snow at my house. Over at the Depot(distance of 5 miles) they have an inch of snow. ugh!!! ORIGINAL: William Robison Tum Dump: Think Donald's son is calling you a lollytwat also. Bill. |

RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Tom, I do my best work in the late evening hours. But it all depends on the days rest before or if I choose to fall asleep after dinner watching tv...only to wake up and work on my plane.
The wings are stressing me out so I've been spending MUCH more time in front of the TV, sitting behind my workbench, pondering my next move to form the leading edge properly as to not change my airfoil to the point of disaster, while attempting to retain symetry (sp?) between wing halves. SIGH. It's nice to see I haven't been forgotten on here though. :) The play on my name has inspired me to new handles possibly! :) S |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Sincraft, We wouldn't mess with your handle if we didn't love ya!
Anyway it seems to have slowed down now. No insults in the last 20 hours. I think maybe that Bill's medicine is wearing off. When I get mystified by something I'm workong on, I watch TV too. Sooner or later, the answer comes to me. I figured out mt aileron installation on the FW that way yesterday. I even got some of it done! I'm warming up the shop now, so I can go out and finish it after breakfast. Supposed to be 40 here today, but with 10-15 mph winds. That puts the wind chill low enough for me to stay inside! Don flew his GWS Corsair for the first time yesterday. When he breaks out the electric planes, I know winter is here. The little thing is kinda neat. He says it flies well. I made the paint for it. Maybe we can get him to post a picture of ot. (hint, Don, hint) |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Snoop,
Sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with the attitude of some of the member of the club. If I am a problem TELL me I will not be offended. I would like to know if I offended someone. The guy who flys every day, who told you to get another plane because the Eagle will not last long, has a history of crashing. So far he has gon through 8 Cubs. He gets nicer as you get to know him. But if you are not comfortable with him do not go when he is there. He flys every day from about 10am-2pm. If he said that is a sort of serious and somewhat mean way I applolgise. He is tired of training new pilots. Trainers can and do last a long time. The treasurer's trainer lasted him 2 years before the right wing fell off during flight. Mine is still going. And there is a guy who only flys his trainer. You will not necessarly crash it within a certain time frame just depends on your flying style. Many guys have different oppinions and attitudes about the cycle of R/C flying. Maby you would consider coming to the Christmas party and win equipment, supplies, (about one-thousand $$ in prizes) and eat cake and ice-cream. No business is conducted at the December meeting just a big party. There you could meet different members of the club, hear their conversations, expearance their personallities, and then make your stay in the club or join the farm group decision. I hope this helps some are intentionally mean, others sound mean, others do not understand you, others do not like answering newbie (dumb to them) questions, others do not like to give training, others are helpful, others lend you field tools, others are just there to look nice but not to do anything. It is all a matter of finding the right person. Once again my appologies for people who are shuning you from that first solo. Sincerly, BaronSchwab or BrennonS |

RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
hey gurus, guys, knearly knutered knaves, dom trumps, stink rafts, slick billys, snoop scoups, barron et all other new namers,
i've been out because of laptop power supply problems & various other [&:] crazy stuff. ha well, i'm about 2 pages behind the times. my daughters van had eng. and trans. troubles. there's times i think its time for her to get a new timex. or maybe just a new watchmaker. ron e-mailed me that the eagle is ready for another training session. although nights are cooler here, flying times are still near tee shirt temps, so there's no neutering weather down here yet. so i'll put the eagle up again this fri. & sat if the wx cooperates. it's been rainy or threatningly so for the last several days. one of my work chums was sort of kidding me about getting a helichopper, so i'll tell him that line (i liked that one) about them not really flying, but being so ugly that they're just repelled by the ground. :D oh yeah snoop that invitation from the barron sounds like a happening you don't want to miss. tell us all about it after the fact, ok? well, it's about time for me to dispose of a moon pie and a jersey highball. eesay oooyay aterlay,,,,, o k ? aleday |
RE: Eagle 2 ARF & 4 Stroke Engine?
Elad, Good to have you back with us!! Maybe you were lucky that you were'nt around. The words were flying hot and heavy for a while.
Bet you are glad to have your Eagle back. The only shirt sleve weather we have up here is indoors. Good luck this weekend. |
