Troublemaker 60
Here is a new project on the table that will be a short kit/scratch build. I’m not a big plan builder so let’s see if this works out ok. I love the old pattern planes and stumbled upon a Eureka short kit recently.
I just picked up my print and am now picking wood and hardware that I have laying around. This should be fun, have several fine engines and pipes to choose from……… https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...511380428.jpeg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...2b46f9ed7.jpeg |
Looking forward to seeing this one progress.
|
Thank you Sir.
I'll be doing this Troublemaker and an Allied hobbies Intrepid at the same time. Should take me thru the winter and I'll call it good for the year of building..................... |
I'm tuned in to watch the show....
for the Troublemaker, I see the "73 date on the plans and the '74 date on the magazine article..:) |
Troublemaker is 73 Toni Bonetti and Intrepid is 1975 Dick Russ.
Both fly excellent and they will make my flying abilities look good. I'm excited about both........... When the Intrepid comes I'll start another thread and have both going at the same time. Enjoy! |
Thinking VF .61 on this one……….
Still waiting on the short kit to arrive, plenty of things to get ready, wood and hardware is here, gotta round it all up…….. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...c2fbe3994.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...cab477783.jpeg |
When I first started flying RC in 1983 the club that I joined was big into pattern...
They hosted one or two well attended pattern meets per year. Just like with the control line stunt airplanes, Many pattern planes that I saw were some really beautiful airplanes. Crazy thing for me is, in all these years I never built a pattern plane. Got to fly one a couple times that belonged to a friend, and I was amazed at how smooth it was to fly... Anyway, these airplanes that you have been and will be building are obviously the style of that ERA and certainly remind me of those years... |
Rick,
I hope that is a good thing. My club members look at me and they have no idea what I'm flying or building, they don't get it at all.............. they go about flying their little electric foam thing with a big question mark over their heads.........lol Some of the club guys are really starting to pay attention to my stuff and notice my silly creations buzzing around. I don't compete, I just really appreciate a well balanced, correctly to slightly over powered pattern plane. I have owned many, built many, and always come back to these type planes when I'm looking at my fleet and deciding what I'm lacking. Hoping this one is a fun build...AND Flyer! It will be a bit different for me this time as it is more of a scratch build rather than a kit like I usually do.. |
PlumberD,
I hope you don't mind me putting this here.. After seeing this thread, and while doing some searches I stumbled across this thread started by Dick Russ in 2008 https://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/cla...say-hello.html Well, snap, I should have waited till you started the thread on the other airplane for this one |
Any and all comments are welcome!

Still adding to the pile and coming out ok so far, found some 3/8 sheeting and some big tri stock for fuse sides. Getting excited, this will be light, the wood is really old Sig stuff I got from a guy last year. This wood is amazing compared to what is on the hobby shop shelves…….The Sig 3/32'x 3" sheeting I have for the wing says 93 cents on it............:o I just looked and the same sheets cost $1.73 more each per sheet to buy today..............Wow!

Look what just arrived 😉

Well, let’s get right into it……….
Nice wood and cutting from Eureka, Very nice! I had some 1/4 piano wire so I may utilize the alignment holes provided, not a big fan of things like this but maybe this time it will benefit me as the ribs have tabs on every other rib….. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...48249df67.jpeg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...e0da1003b.jpeg |
Here is a path for servo leads………
And the first wing setting there ready to start glueing things up…….. So far so good, another tapered wing which for some reason messes with my brain……… https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...612b6cb14.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...4fbf217df.jpeg |
Here is a wing top skinned, I’ll flip this over and cut some sheer webs from scrap, amazing how much scrap wood you can find if you’re really looking…………🥺

Here is the bottom with gear blocks and servo rails installed. Tabs are gone so now the bottom sheeting can be prepared……..going ok so far, no sense in putting away the scraps just yet…….🤔

Here is the wing sheeted and ready for tips and ailerons. So far so good, more time is obviously needed to search for wood and get things ready vs. a kit that is supplied with everything.
Fully sheeted wing sure makes things rigid and strong feeling………….🤓 https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...157551ed2.jpeg |
Here is the other wing starting to frame up…………😗

No slowing down
As usual, you are moving (building) right along...
that design has fiberglass and paint written all over it.. But man, that is a lot more work to do! |
|
I'll just use regular covering, yes it is coming along fine and it will be hopefully ready to join tomorrow night.
Weight of the first came in at 9 oz. Here is a pic off the Eureka website that really looks cool to me..............:D The guy I bought this short kit was shocked I was building it and said he would pop in here to watch. I had the thread going before the plane arrived…………… https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...734020ee2.jpeg |
I sure like the look of those laser cut sheets....
The only kit in my stash that is laser cut is a BALSA USA PHAETON II bipe.. Are the ribs 1/16 or 3/32? |
All the ribs are 3/32, same with wing sheeting. I would love this plane to be under 7 pounds ready to fly. I have no way to know until I get a little deeper into it…………
|
Here is the other wing with gear blocks, bolt and dowel blocks installed. One of these days I’ll have my kid repaint that rabbit………Hopefully I can get the other side sheeted and join the wing half’s later today……..🥺
