Well guys I have put the 1/3 scale super cub on the back burner and pulled the L-4 out. I'm getting inventor 09 on my laptop fro work and look to pop the l-4 into it and make a 3d version I'm change a few items on it from what I did just to make it a little easier to build. I will say this it will not be a beginners build. When I get it finished I will do a little mods and make it into a J-3 also. I lost a couple files I used to print the panels but have just about got my file rebuilt.

acerc Love your door setup and handle on it. Just and FYI I have also done this. If you look at the full scale you will not see a handle on the outside, only the inside. You would go to the opposite side, slide the window down reach in and open the door. A lot of guys have modified them to have an handle on the outside. On my L-4 I used the head of a allen bolt on the outside. I insert my allen wrench in and turn to open and close my door. Talking to the owner of the full scale and he said that is what some of the full scale guys are doing also.
Cub Man,

Are you going to be making panels for different size cubs? i.e 1/5???

Thanks
Grant

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build

Ok guys on the panels. I'm looking into 1/3 and 1/5 scale. The big questions is this? On the scale side the top of the panel rounds over a little. Most all the cubs I have seen are flat. So do I make the panel flat on top so they will fit the existing cub, or do I round them at the top so they look scale and you have to do some work to make them fit

Horsemanure. I'm doing 1/4 so I have no input. But if I did I'd say,"Make it scale and I'll make fit".

For my application, GP 1/5, I don't have to much room to work in.. I'd go with the flat..

Well after 4 month's she's or it's ready for paint. As soon as the weather calm's down a little. Funny, If anyone remembers I started this build because of weather. Anyway's. Of the list of want to doo's I cut short on a few, No folding struts(don't need them), No Robart gear(will probably add later), only partial cabin and no remote lock for the wing mount. And still haven't decided on how to do the dash. Thinking of going to the municipal and take some photo's.  But all-in-all I am very happy with this Sig kit and the way it has turned out.
I would still like to do an L-4. When cubman finishes his plans, I will probably do one then.

Later!

Can't speak for the others.

If I were interested in a GP Cub, I'd be looking in a GP Cub forum for it, not one for a Sig Cub. So you're not likely to get as much interest or as many viewers here.

Hello all, I hope ther's room for one more 1/4 CW cub builder. My honey got me a Sig 1/4 CW cub kit for a Christmas present, and I know where she hid it-(under the bed).  Anyway, I've been following this thread for quite some time and I am very impressed with the talent and expertise that all of you bring to the table.   Thankyou Anthony for starting this thread!

great to see some other builders getting started on some CW Cubs! it really is a great model to build. it frames up quickly but really is a time consuming model to 'finish'. the 90% complete seems to drag on for a while.

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build

Well Anthony if you build another cub it will have to be better than the last and that will be hard to do!  I have a question as I am gathering all of my components for the Christmas build.  I want this Cub to be a gasser (my first) and I am leaning towards a DLE20 but don't know if it will be underpowered.  I believe a 20 to be comparable to a glow 120 and that seems to be the size alot of modelers choose.  Any thoughts?

WacoNut 11-30-2011 03:59 PM

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build

I would think the DLE-20 would pull the Cub just fine. I just checked the specs and it will turn a 16x6 prop and this is what I was using on my Magnum 120 and it pulled my Cub without any problems.

My clipped wing Cub was a good flying plane and I miss it but I have several other planes I want to build before I build another C/W Cub. When I do build another one it will be gas powered. It is looking like my next build will be a Balsa USA 1/4 DR1. I have a new DLE-30 in the box waiting for it.:D

Thnaks for the info on the DLE Anthony.  I have been flipfloping back and forth between the 20 or the 30 for some time now.  I originally wanted the OS 160 twin- then I found out what they cost [:o].  Rather put the money in more scale details for the plane!  BTW great choice on your next build....

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build

VJ,

If I may put in my two cents, I'm using a DLE20. Haven't completed the build yet but all my research says it's a good choice. HOWEVER, if you are going to put her on floats go with the 30! Just my two cents.

The Cub went in due to a radio failure, the only thing I salvaged was a few servo's and the engine. I now have a 33% Cub to take it's place. I have since upgraded to a Hitec Aurora 9 radio.

Thanks Cub Flyer Fresno.  Still think I'm going to go with the DLE20.  Excited to try a gas engine and not have to clean up the mess glow engines leave behind.  Did you have to move your firewall back on your build or did it stay in the stock location with the 20?

OMG I would have asked you for that beautiful gem in a heartbeat. I would have repaired it. even if the repairs we not done perfectly that plane was too good to let go of. that breaks my heart.

Anthony I am starting a Sig 1/4 clipped this new years. I challenge you to do the same. You know that you would enjoy the heck out of another one. This time you can put a DLE 30 on it and go wild, or perhaps a 160 twin?

RE: Sig 1/4scale C/W Cub build

Hello guy's. Sitting in a campground enjoying my wife's company. She's napping right now. Hello and welcome to the newbies. Glad to have ya aboard. My opinion on a few things. A DLE 20 would be more than enough for this cub. As for the firewall measure your engine and mount and work it out with the plans. I had to modify mine. And was no big deal. I did have one issue with the build. That was with the ply wing joiner. By the book the area it slides into was covered before installation of the joiner. I would put the joiner in before covering that area.
And no I'm not useing that pipe and/ or cowl. Have both, JTec pipe and glass cowl on order.
Anthony,
I'm with everyone else, you need a cub.

Robert,
I do have a Cub. My 33% AMR J-3 Cub fullfils my need for Cubs for now. I think I will always have a Cub in the hangar one size or another.
