Cut after you build the wing.( before you glue the wing tip and root ribs on)

I just answered the PM, but to recap. I did as Woops said. I glued the spars and trailing edges on first and then cut them to the correct length flushed with W1 before sheeting and adding the final rib. For the trailing edge, I "built" some support blocks using scrap balsa from the kit that I stacked on top of each other until I had the correct height. I think I made about 3 or four of these blocks. I then pinned the trailing edge to these blocks while the glue was drying or use CA and accelerator to go fast.

Good luck.

I found a picture that shows it. As you can see I only used two blocks on either end. One in the middle wouldn't hurt either...

I think I read in your thread about your SSE is that you changed the wing sheet b/c it was too thin. If so, what did you change to.

RE: Sig Something Extra Kit

The same thickness, but a little denser wood. The sheet that was supplied with the kit was really too soft.

You don't want it too dense either, since then it will be hard to bend and make a good fit with the profile of the wing.

Tychoc...thanks man. When we moved from TX to VT we bought a house that's over 100 years old. With the very long "building seasons" up here I couldn't rest until I had a suitable place to build so I did the best I could with what I had.

Manny... Did you your SSE come in last night? Oh wait, I know, you've been too busy building to update us. Come on man! Give us some pics! I started mine last night but didn't bother taking pics because all I did was cut new parts from the kit to make the second fuse.
Here you go DamonTX... The next pic. I am hoping it will be a small pic

I forgot the W-2 wing rib. I kept looking at the instructions and I thought something looked wrong. I got it on before it was too late. Thank goodness. I think once I get the left wing off the plans I am going to start the right wing. I do not have enough room (like somebody we know - DamonTX :) ) and then I will finish both wings at the same time. I might forget what I did with the left and I want to start the right while it is still fresh in my mind.

We are waiting on your pics? You have to give us your new modifications for this new SSE. I cannot wait to hear your new ideas. Twin engines? What type of engines?? You are keeping me in suspense!!

Tychoc: The weights I am using are from my scuba diving equipment. I was going to make your patent $.20 weight bags, but I remember these weights. LOL

Manny5150: Looks good. Once you get going it's hard to stop. You'll be done with the wing and fuse before you know it:D Of course, then starts the sanding[:o]

You did a great job converting the cellar to a great shop! As you know, no basements in Texas, but we can fly most of the year! With all the dust and fumes and my general mess in my "shop corner" upstairs, my wife has already mentioned that building a shed in the back for building and storing planes might be a good idea:D
I'm hoping to one day have somthing similar to your setup.

Hi Manny... It looks like you are making a really good effort to keep those wings straight, nice job with the straight edge & weights on the top spar, that'll do it.

I worked on the twin from 6:00pm-2:00am Friday night, from 9:00am-1:00am Saturday and from 9am to 9pm Sunday. By the time I got back upstairs and got onto RCU last night I figured my wife would divorce me if I went back downstairs again. So I'll get some pics tonight.

Both's fuselages are done. Most of the time was spent cutting all the parts I needed for the second fuse. Tonight will be the hatches then onto the rudder and designing an elevator.

Tychoc...oh yeah, I remember my days in Dallas when we could fly almost year round....and we had a paved runway [:o] Oh, those were the days. Hopefully our friendly federal gov't will send me to a warmer climate next time.

DamonTX:

Looks like you will be flying your Twin SSE next week the way you are progressing on the kit. :)

Last night, I was able to take off the left wing off the plans and I stopped working on it. I figured I better start the right wing and then when I am able to take off the right wing I will complete both wings at the same time. I did not want to forget what I just did on the left wing.

To get off the subject of the SSE, I order my VF Edge 540 last Tuesday and they shipped it out the same week (Thursday). I will probably receive it by end of this week. Can you believe that?

Manny5150: I'm envious. The VF Edge or Extra is on my wish list, but I don't have the money for it right now. Also, you must be one of the few whom got the plane shipped in a timely manner. Seems like the average wait is on the order of weeks from VF.

DamonTX: Being born and raised in Norway, I'm very familiar with long, snowy and cold winters[:o] In some respects, I still miss the opportunity to go skiing, but by now I rather live somewhere warmer. Austin is a little too warm right now though[:'(], but I remind myself that the hot season here is still shorter than the cold/rainy season back home. In the end, it's hard to get it all...

I just wanted to show you guys my SSE- it was my first kit and my first Monokote job. I have a Saito 82 in her, and am using the Dubro gear for ground clearance. I'm pretty proud of this one! She's a real monster on high rates, and soooo easy on low rates. I liked this kit so much that I'm gonna go with another SIG- the Smith Miniplane.[8D]

RE: Sig Something Extra Kit

Tychoc:

I have two questions for you - 1)what type of landing gear did you go with? The dubro?

2)also, what engine did you use?

I am wondering if there will be enough clearance of the prop if I use the dubro landing gear. I want to put a 4-stroke in it.

I have one more question, do the instructions say sheet the turtle deck. If not, what type of wood sheet did you use and did you have to do mods to the fuselage?

I have been using med CA, do you think that will weight down the wings. I have been mainly using wood glue, but sometimes I have used Med CA to speed up the building time.

RE: Sig Something Extra Kit

Manny5150:

I'm far from an expert (just a few months ahaed of you), so take my advice for what it is;)

1. I went with the Dubro landind gear
2. I'm using the Irvine .53 2-stroke engine with a 12.25x3.75 prop.

I think you will have enough clearing with the dubro gear using a four stroke, but others that actually are using one might be able to confirm this. I remember the dubro gear gave me much better clearance than the stock one. (I ended up putting the stock gear on my Sky Raider II)

No, sheeting the turtle deck is a modification of the kit, and yes I did have to modify the fuselage a little to do this. I felt this was an interesting modification to try because I felt it would enhance the looks of the SE. The stock stringer appearance looks a little "cheap" to me, but others don't so that's up to you. For this modification I had to sand off the stringers to leave room for the sheeting so that it would end up flush wiht the fuse. I also glued in some support blocks so that the sheeting could be glued better at the bottom. I used the same dimensions for the turtle deck sheeting as for the wing. It was pretty easy and looks good. It makes the SE a little more tail heavy, so that's a tradeoff.

No, I don't think the medium CA will weight it down considerable as long as you don't drown the wing in it...

How about some pics?

Manny,

I'm using the Dubro on mine and should have plenty of clearance - I'm planning on a Saito .72/.82. (The .72 got transplanted on my T2 and I haven't yet decided on a replacement) The dubro gear should allow a 13" prop. There is also other carbon-fibre gear available from tntlandingear and fiber-lite with plenty of clearance, but they're a lot pricier than the dubro. There are no instructions to sheet the turtledeck, but I did mine with 1/16" balsa. I took 1/16" off of the edge of all of the formers and notched the stringers 1/16" deeper. I matched the edge of the sheeting up with the edge of the fuse side and sanded flush. I've still got some more shaping around the cowl to do, but so far, I'm generally pleased with the construction.

RE: Sig Something Extra Kit

Hi Manny
Sounds like you are doing great so far, take your time and keep everything straight and you won't have any problems. I just finished the wings on mine. This is the first full day that I've had to work on it. After laying every thing out I decided to beef up the wings a bit. I substituted hard wood in place of the balsa spars, added blind nuts for the J-hooks, replaced the 1/4"x1/4" trailing edge with 1/4"x1/2" balsa ( I will be using Dubro pinned hinges instead of the CA hinges and needed the extra meat.) Reinforced the aileron servos horizontally and vertically. All this sounds like overkill but I like to really push an airplane hard. Looks good so far, I should have the ailerons and the tail group finished tonight and will start the fuse tomorrow. I also plan on sheeting the turtle deck, and using Great Planes 60 size main gear to give it a wider stance, Sullivan tailwheel bracket, and reinforcing the floorboards so the landing gear won't tear out. I will check back on your progress as you go along.

Hey Damon
Are you going to try to do a boomed tail on the double fuse, I think it would look great if you can make it work.

Dale...I thought about doing a boomed fuse like on my P-38 but a few things stopped me. The turtledeck would have to be rounded or made boxy, I couldn't think of a good way to transition the turtledeck into the front of the fuse without it looking ugly. Second, I'm trying like crazy to get it finished this month for a fun fly after I get back from a week long work trip the first week of Sept.

Pictures are coming tonight, I promise. On top of what I said above, I'm also drywalling the kitchen for cabinets to be installed Sat.

___Edit- I just came back to add some pics. If anyone does a twin like this I'd highly suggest just buying two kits. By the time I cut out all the parts for the second fuse & rudder I could have easily had both fuses built.

The first pic is the modified rudder. This worked well on the first twin. Also there is the tail wheel gear I'm using. It's different than whats supplied with the kit in that it has a nylon hinge that will go into the rudder trailing edge...much better than the one supplied which relied only on the rudder for support.

RE: Sig Something Extra Kit

Hi Manny

Forgot to mention it last night, but on page 11 of your instruction book step 37 DO NOT drill the holes in the engine mount for your engine yet !!! You may need to move the engine forward or backward a little to help you achieve the proper balance ( CG ) of the airplane. Wait until you finish the plane and get to the balancing steps (page 26) to drill the 9/64th holes in the engine mount. This may enable you to use the engine position to balance the plane instead of adding lead weight to the nose or tail.

Very good point. In fact, I ended up changing out the engine mount so that I could drill new holes and move the engine furher out and balance the plane.

Thanks guys for the heads up. I did not get a chance to work on the plane last night. I was out fly my Tiger II and getting my other plane ready for sell. I sold my trainer (Hobbico Avistar). I will be back to work on the SSE tonight. Hey Tychoc, that is how I have funds to purchase the SSE and VF Edge otherwise I would need a purchase order to give to my wife:D . She would love to see this line, but we will keep it to ourself. I do not know want to give her any hints.

LOL, yes, you'd better be careful otherwise you might end up with the same problem I had a few months back.

Hi Damon

Did you have to add any right or down thrust to the engine on your SSEs ?? I did not see anything in the manual or Sigs website. Firewall is already in but I could add washers to the mount if needed.

Thanks
Dale

Spad_man 08-11-2005 08:35 AM

RE: Sig Something Extra Kit

No reason for any downward thrust or any other thrust. build it like the plan and it will be a great plane.

Connery 08-11-2005 10:25 AM

RE: Sig Something Extra Kit

It's a pretty durable plane too. I was learning to hover with mine and got too low and ended up smacking the ground. Broke the fuse in half right were the turtle deck starts. It will be repaired easily and will fly again.

Connery:

Sorry to hear about your plane. I read about your SSE from the thread that tychoc started. Hopefully, you can get it repaired soon to start flying again.

I am still working on the wings. SSE Kit is great kit, but some of the wood is left to be undesirable. I guess you get that sometimes with these kits. This is my first one. I have to go to the LHS to replace some of the wood because it is not dense enough. I have ran into the same problem that Tychoc had. I guess that is part of the game. Hopefully, I can get back to work on it this weekend.

LOOKING GOOD DAMONTX!!!:D

RE: Sig Something Extra Kit

Thanks Manny, I'm juggling the build with a ton of other things right now but am still moving along pretty quickly. Last night I got started on the wing center section. After that it will move along very quickly since the wings have no modifications other than being sheeted.

Dale, the last twin I did had no out-thrust and the incidence was at 0 for each engine. It flew great but the lack of out thrust let to it's "retirement" after an engine out. With Ed Moorman's help, the new one should be set up to fly fine on one engine. As far as singles go, Spad man is right, you really don't need it unless maybe you're using a really big engine.

Good thread, I can't wait to see all the new SSE's being built here, more pics the better!

Damon
