Let's bash another Somethin' Extra!

If you look in my profile you'll see a SE that I had for 3 or 4 years... note the word "had"... It had an unfortunate encounter with gravity this past summer that we won't talk about right now.:D

Some of the mods I did to that one consist of: Counterbalancing the rudder, pull pull cables on the rudder, aft mounting the elevator servo, Dubro main gear, Sullivan tail gear and adding a fuel tank hatch.

I've done all of the above to this one plus: Counterbalanced the elevators, added removable side force generators (an idea i got from loganjoel) & slightly larger main gear mounting plate... also cut a few extra lightening holes here and there.

I'll post additional pics after it's covered and the pilot is installed.

Bashing is so much FUN! Tell me what you think.

Here you can see the elevator servo mount.

Oh yea... I also added an extra inch to the trailing edge of the rudder... my last SE only had the counter balanced (exactly like this one) and it knife edged pretty good... hopefully this one will do even better. :)

Also cut-away the elevators for more rudder throw... [8D]

Thats one seriously hot-rodded SSE- sweet!

Can we talk about that gravity issue now? Looks good OTE. I'll post picts of mine soon. SFG's look nice.

P.S.- The good thing about a south-bound knife edge is you don't have to worry about greasing your landing.:D

Did your last SE have the side force generators like this one? I can't wait for your flight report. Especially on how it holds a knife edge. This really looks like a winner. Nice work.[sm=thumbs_up.gif]

RE: Let's bash another Somethin' Extra!

Nope... no side force generators on the first one. It only had the counter balanced rudder with no other mods to the flying surfaces and it knife edged pretty darn good... so i've got high hopes for this one. loganjoel is doing similar mods to his too... we're planning on maidening both these birds on the same day... should be interesting.

Good, the way the weather has been, at least here, that should be soon! ;)

I had one SE a couple of years ago. It was a lot of fun to fly. I always wondered how it would fly with modifications as yours.
(I didn't think of the side force generators though.)

Nice Bash:D

I also increased the Rudder throw and added 1 in to the Rudder but didn't do the counterbalance. Knife edge is OK but not great. Nice mod to the elevators.

Good luck with the maiden.

Pete

i will post picts of mine later today. I am going with a superman theme on this one (my 5 year old sons idea.) My 2 year old daughter wanted it to be Barbi, maybe the next plane. My mods are pretty much the same as OTE. I added 1 inch to the rudder and made 1 inch taller with a counter balance. I stick built my rudder though (my son borrowed some of my rudder parts for his homemade balsa boats that float real well.) Oh well, at least he is interested in this part of the hobby. My elevators are the same as OTE's. I also shortened my cockpit opening by 2" and cut the canopy 4" shorter. It makes it look fast. I should have my side force generators done today. They are a little different than OTE's.[8D]

If you want a fun SE you have to have more power like the power a Tower 75 can give. It opens so many more posibilities for you than just putting around with a weak 46 or 50. I like your counter balances and when I build another I will give that a shot. I have just finished an Ultra Sport Plus 40 that I mounted a Super Tiger 90 on the nose and modified the fuse a little which included lengthing it by 3 inches. The Ultra Sport has the counter balanced surfaces and a longer wing. It is remarkable what these little 40 size planes can indure. I must say the Something Extra is my favorite plane of the two.

I'll be putting the same power plant that I had on the last one... OS 50SX. The OS had plenty of power.

Ill be going with an OS 70II surpass four stroke. It should pull my plank around just fine.

OTE - how about a close-up of the side force generators? I'd like to study those a bit more. Any aero to them?

Here are the picts of my plane. Pretty much the same mods as OTE but some differences. I made my SFG's a little different. They are 11" tall. Notice the canopy and opening are quite a bit shorter than stock. I also stick built my rudder.

Nope... no aero to 'em... Thought about it but decided just to round the edges. Since they are removable I figure I can build other sets to try out in the future.

Nice Job! loganjoel!
Those SFGs are SICK! [8D]:D

Got to thinking about the aero after I posted. It would be hard to do much more than just flat w/o favoring one edge over the other. So flat is best IMO.
Both planes look great. I like the shorter cockpit too. More like a single place competition plane.

Are you going to do any modifications to the wing retention method? The SFGs are going to try to remove the wing from the fuse during large yaw angles. I would also think the stock threaded hooks in the wing root are not up to the loads involved as well. Food for thought.....

I think the hooks are fine it's what you use to keeep the hooks together that may be the issue. I've always used a fresh rubber band looped around a couple of times but consider a zip tie.

I used 2 #64 bands tripled over on my last SE... but you pose a good thought. I guess if our wings rip off on the first knife edge pass we'll have to do something to "beef" that up. (sorry)

I think that a couple of #64s or a zip tie should be pretty good. I've pulled on the wings pretty hard to see if I could budge them on my last SE... they didn't offer to move. But... I'm still gonna think about your suggestion... maybe a hook with a deeper thread and CA'd in place might add some extra insurance. hmmm...

Hehe, didn't think of that when I said "food for thought." :)

Yeah, I was remembering the shallow threads on the "J" hook from when I built my SE. I don't know how much it can stand before tearing out of the wood. I was even going to put blind nuts inside the root rib and replace the hook with a threaded eye like [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFV32&P=0]this[/link], lock-tite them together, and then use a cable tie. I got in a hurry to finish and just used the stock ones. But like you already know, the stock setup works good (for stock wings).

loganjoel... your cover job is looking good! one question... why does superman need a plane? lol :) just kidd'n... figured since your wife and kids can't say it on here i'd say it for 'em.

i'm done with all the base colors on mine... no graphics yet... i'll try to get a pic posted tomorrow night after work.
