RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
ORIGINAL: alfredbmor Tom: Great job on the ailerons, did you tapered following the airfoil? Did you assembled the wing as per the plans and cut the trailing edge or shortened the ribs before assembling? Thanks. Alfred. |
RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
Indeed Tom.
Your new table seems to ask for more, I bet you will be building soon a new model, aren't you? By the way, what kind of board are you using on your table?. Rugerv45; like Tom I also noted the elvator balances glued onto the stab, I understand that the balances help to relieve some servo stress by letting the air help on the servo movement. I do not know if there is much difference on the plane performance, and I think that it could be possible that the pull pull system on elevator would help this set up. |
RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
Its an MDF torsion box style table with a sheet of drywall for pin material. I would cut those balances off the stab, they help elevator authority...
I'll probably build another this coming winter, maybe a warbird or scale job. |

yes you were right RVman, I goofed there. I tryed to back track my thoughts as to how that happened.
I beleive what i did, is after i built the frame of the elevator i unpinned it from the board ( not sure why) and then grabbed the stab by mistake when i did attach the balancers. I guess the elevators looked right to me because i have a couple arfs that dont have balancers. Anyway i fixed them. If you look on page 9 of the manual they have the balancers laying seperate from the elevators? That gave me just enough rope to hang myself.:) The balancers probably do help the performance quite a bit. Alfredbmor your wing looks great, it will look even better in the sun! Design idea #3 seemed to be the favorite, my wife and daughter also agreed, so thats what i went with. It certainly wasnt the easy one, but i was happy with the way it came out. Ive got the pattern for the wing design done on paper. I just need to cut it out. Alfredbmor wanna rent your monokote cutter? lol |

I like that one too, democracy won this time and sure I will love to rent my vinyl cutter at any time:D:D. It seems to me that you are almost done with the fuse and tail section, they look great and as Tom said they will be easy to see when flying. I have finished the covering of the main wing, there is some more covering to do which are some gray stripes on the fuse sides and on the wings, after that I should start the cowling and wheel pants painting job. Then I will make the rods linkages and this plane will be practically ready for its maiden flight. I'd like to share these photos of my Cap 232, I really like this tail wheel assembly by SIG, and my favorite photo, the one with my three years old son who is in charge to take dad to bed in an appropriate time. This little gentleman has been with me at all the building process; I went yesterday to the LHS and bought a Guillow Kit to teach him how to build, maybe I will post in the future the building of this guillow with my son. |

I think thats great your son gets the chance to see how a model airplane is born. Some people nudge kids away when they are busy with something, even with hobbies. They dont realize how rewarding it could be if their child's interest becomes the same love they have for the hobby, and something they could enjoy doing together! I like your planes design. A little paint work and your not far from maiden flight :D I like your tail wheel, Ive seen a similar one before, but didnt know the brand. I tryed looking on Sigs website, but didnt see it. Where did you find it? For this plane i went with a Hanger 9 tail wheel assembly. The wire is a little thinner, but i like the shock absorbing coil built into it. |
RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
Rugerv45:
Thanks for your kind words, I do too think that I am closer from the Maiden Flight Day, I will need some paint job and apply some more stripes to this model, I am thinking on tint the canopy and I am wondering if any of you guys have tinted one before, I've been doing some research and found at Tower hobbies two options to choose from that are: The pactra polycarb window tint stock # LXCY44; and, Tamiya spray lacquer TS-71 smoke Since this is the first time that I will tint a canopy, any help is greatly appreciated. Rugerv45: I bought my SIG tail wheel assembly at the LHS but you may find this item as well at: http://www.sigmfg.com/IndexText/SIGSH756.html I also believe that the tail wheel assembly that you already installed surely will work great. |
RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
:D:D:D Alferd you allways take the complicated way to do stuf!!!
:):):) if you trie to get your cannopy tinted you could go to a local Wallmart and find if they have the Ritz cloth paint!!! just drop the paint in a big can of hot water an then simer the canopy PA QUE TE COMPLICAS !!!! |
RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
Thanks Grillo, I will do that, we missed you at the meeting yesterday, I knew you have done this job before and I was hoping you to replay my post.
Thanks again. :):) |

Got the plane all framed up, all thats left to do is the cowling, canopy, and covering. Weight as seen is 4lbs 2 oz. Should be just under 5 when all finished. I need to find a good covering scheme...any ideas?

RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
Tom:
Did you use a bigger fuel tank or you had to raise it for some reason? I noted this on a previous post and now I am very intrigued, I used a 12 oz Dubro Fuel Tank and it was a little hard to install with the rubber cushion wrapped around but I finally did all right. Please let me know more about it. The airframe looks great. What is the primary color that you want to use on your scheme? I am waiting for a white can of lustrecote spray from tower to paint the Cowling and wheel pants, as for my canopy I decided to go with the Pactra Polycarb Window tint, since I had to buy the paint anyway. Thanks. |
RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
It is raised to make room for the exhaust underneath and also to centre the tank centreline with the carb to make engine tuning more consistant inverted and upright. It's a 10 oz sullivan.
I have no idea what to do for colour scheme yet. |
RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
Thanks for the info Tom, about your scheme I bet that you will end up with a nice one.
I just finished with the gray and yellow stripes, I will coat with primer the cowling and the pants today, Paint will be here on Friday or Monday then I will paint this items plus the canopy and connect the elevator and ailerons linkages, place the battery in place and will be ready for the maiden flight. Finishing this plane after the building task have taken more time than the proper building but I am very happy with the results, I will post some pictures tomorrow. |

Strips and painting are all done, here the pictures of the complete airframe. Canopy was painted with the Pactra Polycarb window tint, now is darker than I wished but now I can save weight avoiding the use of a pilot bust. I also painted the landing gear using Lustrekote white primer, white color and clear I hope this way can remain the paint on for a good amount of time.

Here are some pictures of the internal radio set up and at the end, I had to move the battery to the front to get the proper balance of the airframe (3 3/4").
As Tom said this is a heavy plane, I ended with a 6 lbs dry airframe. I will perform the preflight procedure of the throws, engine test, range test and this plane will be ready for its maiden in no time. Thanks. Alfred. |
RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
Nice job! i'll get pics up in soon of mine when i finish covering it.

Hi guys
Alfredbmor: Great job on on your color scheme, did you use spray tint on your canopy? or other method Ive got all the covering finished, but need to paint the cowl black. I have not selected a paint brand yet. Ive been told lustercote is the way to go, but i like to have a choice. What brand did you use Alrfredbmor? Still trying to decide if im adding a pilot. the canopy is temporary mounted with four screws, so i can add one later. The wheel pants are ready to paint as well, but im not going to use them for maiden flight. as i will fly off of a grass field. Ive installed a pair of hanger 9 pro lite wheels 2 3/4" I may add the wheel pants later with 2 1/4 wheels for looks. |
RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
Thanks Guys.
Nice covering job Rugerv45. I used Pactra Polycarb window tint spray for canopy, if you are going to use it, be careful on the coats, definitively I did use too many coats on mine. I also used lustrekote for the cowl painting, firstly I used white primer, then jet white color and finally used luestrekote clear to match the brightness of the monokote, and this is the best match color that I have had using lustrekote and monokote on all my builds. Rugerv45; good job on your covering job!! RVman: Thanks for your kind words, now I am looking forward to see your color scheme. Thanks. |
RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
I would like to know the final dry weight of your planes, when they will be ready to fly.
Thanks. |

Heres what i thought up for the colour scheme. Weight will be ~5lb RTF although i'll get more exact number once it its all done. My plane is a little tail heavy with the battery just behind the firewall. Not sure why since the rudder is on pull-pull and nothing heavy is in the tail.

RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.

Tail heavy could be a characteristic of this plane, remember that in my set up I am using a heavier engine at the front and two miniservos at the tail and placed the battery just in front, right at the tank hatch. I really want to know the final weight of yours.

Weight is 5.25 lbs RTF. Here's another pic with the ailerons on and also the exhaust setup. Balance is close enough now with cowl, prop, spinner... I need to get the cowl and LG painted yet otherwise the plane is finished.

RE: GP Cap 232 40 Size Build Modifications.
Thanks Alfredbmor Im happy with it
Nice job RVman I really like the colors! My planes weight before painting the cowl is 5 lbs.12 0z. The guy at the hobby shop told me my kit was in his store for about a year. The wood included is going to be from a earlier supply, possibly even a different source than kits purchaced recently. This might explain why mine is not tail heavy. My plane was slightly nose heavy until placing the battery behind the c.g.
