I almost forgot about this thread as I've been posting in a 4 star thread.... Here is a pic of mine completed, but not covered and the final list of mods.
MODS: Raised, Stretched, and Sheeted turttle deck Cockpit moved forward 2 or 3 inches Cockpit area opened up Raised dash cover Trimed and reversed canopy (may trim more) Raised top deck from dash to firewall Rotated engine 90 degrees Dropped the engine 1/4" 12 oz Sullivan shelf-style tank (might step down to a 10oz) Lowered tank shelf for propper tank level relative to the engine Side-mounted 4 stroke install Solid, permanent balsa cowl Wings clipped 1 bay each side Ailerons enlarged and tapered Solid rounded wingtips Dual aileron servos in wig center (to mix flapperons) Bottom center of wing built up to match fuselage Doublers added from rear of F-3 to F-4 Sullivan tailwheel Sullivan #508 and #515 push rods Reshaped and enlarged tail surfaces Tapered fillets join the tail Pilot Woody's head turns with the rudder ... I think thats about it (I may add to the list). Right now I have come in a hair under 4 3/4 lbs loaded and should end up under 5 1/2 lbs after covering and painting (Koverall/Dope/Auto paint). Alot of work to make it look as if this is the way it was supposed to be, but I have ended up with a much more attractive aircraft than the boxy stock 4 Star. I'll post more pics after it is covered of course. |

ORIGINAL: Mttvannest Kbear, I think you and i are building almost the same airplane. I''m bashing a slow poke to look like a p-51B. I''m at work and don''t have my camera, but i will post some pics when i get home tonight. Mine has modified tail feather shaping, retracts, and carries 4 dropable bombs. I started covering it last fri. It''s gonna get the old crow mustang markings, AKA "SLOW CROW"! Hows it coming? Here are the most recent photos of mine. |
RE: Kit Bashing... Lets See Watcha Got
KBear,
I forgot all about this thread. lol. Well since I last posted on this topic I finished the plane. It looks great. I had a vinyl company cut the custom slo-crow decals for the nose. I''m just waiting on a good day to take it out for a fly. I really will post pics when I get home to night. I''m pretty proudof the results. I got side tracked with a few other projects. I''m recovering a morris the knife and building a shrike 10! I like the way yours is coming along, it looks great! |

Here's the final product of my slow poke into a WWII fighter. It is trimmed out like the 'old crow". It has a royal 46 on the nose, retracts, and carries 4 bombs. Flys like a slow poke, lol. Certainly won't win any dog fights. Well maybe against a cub or a lazy bee! I hope to soon build a 15 size slow poke to look like a spitfire.
Here are some pics. If you want to know more, just ask! |
RE: Kit Bashing... Lets See Watcha Got
Mttvannest Looks great. I'll post more when i get farther along. I have a build thread over on RCH if you want to check it out. http://www.*********.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17651

I found this Polaroid today of a Great Planes Sportster Bipe that I bashed back in the early 90's,
I shortened the wing tips by 2" and squared them off and built squared off tail surfaces with counter balances. The plane flew great and was my favorite to fly until I lost it on an engine flame out just after take-off and stalled to the gound and re-kitted itself. The covering was monokote black with gold stripes and white trim. Powered by an OS .40 2-stroke. Anthony |

RE: Kit Bashing... Lets See Watcha Got
Kbear,
It looks sweet! It might not be scale or historically accurate but I can just see the s-poke vs. s-poke dog fight already. 10 ft off the ground at 20 mph, lol! Maybe we could team up and make an attack on a squadron of piper cubs! Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. Matt |
RE: Kit Bashing... Lets See Watcha Got
ORIGINAL: flyst well i guess i got a little lost in the plans for my three channel Kadet...and had to buy a 9 channel radio and mix and couple channels to be able to use all the fun buttons...you will see the first change was tri gear to tail dragger, then add cut the streight wing for barn door ailerons...add the three light systems, with stearable nose lights..light up the insturment panel and cockpit...redesign all the tail feathers ,make a bombbay box inside the fuse ..add the extrernal bombs ,carve out a wooden cowling ...add a side door to hide all the on-off swithces and charging jacks ....make Barbies head turn and sew a lacy red bra for her, as you can not find lingerie for Barbie any more ..invert the engine ...find a set of wheel pants to have that 1930's look...make a momemade saddle for the night glider ...and well needless to say ...room for all 12 servos.....shew glad it is done and flying...next kit.....hummmmmmmm |

I have always wondered how many bash planes (a discription I hate but quess you have to call it something) so this is cool to add to some pretty nice work thats showing up. Bashing is my way to redesign a plane and not have to figure out all the aerodynamics which I know squat about. My first bash is a Goldberg Tiger 60 that got pretty much a total remake.
Plug in wings with flaps and redesigned ailerons and tips, they are sheeted Expanded rudder and elevator surfaces Removeable upper deck and cockpit that was shortened up Self made cowling hiding a DLE 20cc gas engine Tail dragger gear with wheel pants It's covered with Ultra Cote It flies like a Tiger and will hover. This is my last bash of sorts, just finished it. Sig Spacewalker 11 1/4 scale. When I bought the kit I already had plans for it, I did not care for the looks of the fuselage but saw some promise in my changes and the 84" wing had to be made a 3 piece to transport it in a 6" PU box. Wings first : make up new ribs to support the tubes was really all I had to do to them, the center section would be epoxied to fuse after paint.
I installed 1/4 scale Robart Cub gear to center section and made the wing tips, servo control is stock from the plans. Covering is Solartex, wings and tail only. Fuselage was built from plans but was contoured and sheeted with 1/16" plank and glassed. Upper deck and cockpit are removable and added a nice head rest, I was influenced by the Ryan STA, love the look of it and it sure changed the character of the SW. All covering is stitched and taped which I made up myself, fuselage and center section has pannel lines and hand laid 1/16" real aluminum rivets punched from litho plate and heat bonded to primer one at a time. I steped out of the box on the paint job which is automotive base coat / clear coat, the graphics are hand cut from paint mask vinyl and came out pretty nice considering they were my first at doing this. Engine is a DLE 35CC RA and the dummy is a Top Notch 1/4 scale kit. I accpmplished what I set out to do, make a SW like no other and I really like it. It only goes to show what can be done to alot of these planes and end up with something very special. Leroy |

Well since this old thread has been revived....it's calling me to make a post of my Uproars.
There are more mods than meet the eyes. Lots of holes drilled in just about everything. All the tail surface servos mounted in the back, the battery is also in the tail (right in front of the rudder sevo). Guppy belly for bigger and lower tank. Control surfdace shapes.... For a full scoop on all the mods I did a thread here on RCU.. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/kit-...-40-build.html http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=1992537 |

Kind of an old thread ... but since it's had a few recent posts, I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. :)
I love seeing all mods and creative things you've all done. *Leroy* WOW! the detail on that Space Walker is AMAZING! You should be proud. Makes me feel like a real novice to post what I'm up to, but, here goes ... Building up a Guillow's P-40 Warhawk, 501 kit for micro RC. You can follow the build at; http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/kit-...-micro-rc.html Here is a taste of what I'm doing .... Basic 4 channel set up (but with 2 aileron servos) using the "guts" out of an old Horizon Hobby, E-Flight Micro Carbon Cub that decided to turn it's self into spare parts. Gonna have 1 extra servo ... maybe retracts ? ... Tune in to find out. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2013126http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2013127http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2013128http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2013129http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2013130http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2013131http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2013132 |

GP Super Sportster 60 bashed into a twin. I actually used only the ribs from the kit, but used the fuse sides as patterns and lengthened the fuse a bit. It has dieselized OS FP40s. I hope to put it up in the next month or so.

A Chipmunk with Corsair wings. That's Fan-freeky-tastic! My bash was to regress a Balsa USA Fokker DVII into the prototype, a V 11. Some of the changes.
Shorter fuse, shorter nose, narrowed the gear, changed the wing and their positions, reshape the control surfaces, pull pull on everything, full cockpit, I made over 40 changes. But it flies nice and easy, so I must have done something correct. |

Most of my kit bashing was done with my late flying buddy, Carl "Flaps" Laffert, who died 3 years ago at age 90. Flaps loved to build, but wasn't the best RC flier. We teamed up many years ago and I test flew all his planes until he had to quit flying because he couldn't stand very long or look upward. After that, I took over all the flying and he 90% of the building. I used my radios since I normally fly left handed. I can fly a normal mode II, but I do better acro as a southpaw since I started flying that was back in 1970-71. I also bought most of the engines. As a builder, Flaps kept every scrap of balsa, plywood, every nut & bolt, all that left over junk I normally throw away. I buy all new hardware, especially for ARFs. The designs were a team work, but one of us would pick the project.
Here's 2 of our 4*60 kit bashes into Kawasaki Tony Ki-61s. They were both great flying airplanes. The gray 1st one had an OS .91FX for power. It crashed when the stab came off in flight when I flung it around too much. The 2nd OD plane had a Magnum .91XLS with an Ultra Thrust tuned muffler. I could rotate vertical on takeoff and go up as far as I wanted. I did add under-the-stab bracing rods to this one. Both planes had 2 ribs lopped off and a corresponding span round wingtip. The horizontal and vertical stabs had rounded tips added. With the wide stance main gear in the wings both planes would takeoff straight as an arrow. I could nail the power from a standstill and go. Both landed very easily, too. |
