Der Jager 1/3 scale
Hellow fellow flying gents. I'm currently restoring a beautiful bipe and am without plans. The Der Jager arrived without outer wing struts and I would love to know the manufactures specs on C of G as well. Anyone have the plans pinned up somewhere!?Any direction would be greatly appreciated!

RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
balsa usa still sell the plans for this plane.

RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
Center of Balance is 5 11/16" from leading edge of top wing. Checked my plans this evening.

RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
I know this is an old post, But i bought a partbuilt Der Jager last year.
Just got it back out of the store and and started to build but guess what... Can't find the plans that the chap gave me, the top wing span is abnout 80 in. Any ideas what size the Balsa USA one is ? need to buy some plans... Cheers, Chris |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
It's likely a Balsa USA at 80" and the plan and manual are still available. I managed without them. You will be very pleased with this beaut! What are you powering it with? Kindly advise.
Cheers David |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
Excellent ! thanks for that i'll get one ordered from Balsa USA then.
Planning on a Quadra 42 - but recently seen a couple of builds with Zenoah 62's in ... so now I'm wondering if thats going to be enough :) Chris |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
Glad I could help. The 45 will fly it but you will be far happier with the G-62. Just watch the prop/ground clearence. slight mod may be needed depending on your prop selection. A three balde would be optimum.
Cheers |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
Ok - plans and manual - orderd from Balsa USA.
Hmm might give the Quadra 42 to the wife then for her Stampe... She was going the Zenoah 38 route - but I dont recon the Quadra will be over much for it. Just need to save for a new engine then :) BTW - the current build has a single servo for the elevators - thinking of doubling up - thoughts ? Chris |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
Single is fine as long as its third scale rated. Mine is riged this way and it has no difficulty when I pull the big G's!

RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
Definately a beautiful rendition of the Der Jager, is the white and
blue a scale copy of a full sized or your own rendition of this classic bird. BTW see you are from Hemet, say hi to my friend Pat Smith next time you see him. |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
It is my own design. its hard to locate any pics of real der jagers tochoose a paint job you like. I will tell pat you said hi.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span style="FONT-FAMILY: Arial; FONT-SIZE: 7pt">Nice work Jim! Looks great in blue and white for sure. I would love to build one from kit if one ever becomes available to me. They are getting as rare as hens teeth! What is your power plant and how does she handle? Mine has been completed and flown a few times and is a real pleasure to see and It handles quite nicely and is very visible with red in the paint scheme. It likes a touch of power on landings for sure as the stall can come on pretty quickly if your not paying attention! I did manage to nearly "re-kit" mine with a landing gear failure this past summer-have a look on You tube. http://youtu.be/GkwK2fU_bCY Truth be know I didn't give the lock-tite long enough to cure on the wheel collar set screw! Simplest damn things..lol. At any rate the damage was quite minimal and I was greatly relieved after a full inspection to see she will fly again another day. I had to pull the firewall and tank to de-clunk it if you know what I mean! Happy flying and safe landings all!-
Cheers</span></p> |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
Getting ready to build one after the new year, purchasing the short kit
from Lazer-Works in Wichita Falls, Texas. Cowl & wheel pants from Fiberglass Specialties, will have the landing gear cut and bent @ TNT Landing Gears as per the drawings on the plans. Will do a built-up rendition of the ABS turtle deck that was supplied with the kit as it is not offered by any of the glass companies. Will probably do my own paint scheme, as Jim says, their aren't any out there to copy from. Bill D. |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
With all of the re-issues BUSA has done, I wonder if they would consider bringing this one back? Such a cool airplane and lots of great engine choices now for this size.

Sounds great Bill-post some pictures when you can if you please. I was actualy thinking out loud about exactly what virtical grimmace just wrote! How does that happen!!?? I had looked far and wide for info as well as a paint scheme, to very little avail. I do have a few photo's of the real deal and some great models as well-I'll post them when I have a few minutes.

ORIGINAL: vertical grimmace With all of the re-issues BUSA has done, I wonder if they would consider bringing this one back? Such a cool airplane and lots of great engine choices now for this size. being considered, couldn't say when it might happen or not. A couple years ago I was told that Marshall White, the designer of the Der Jager had an issue with Balsa USA over the production of the model kit and that is why it was discontinued. However since his passing, Marshall's son, if I have heard correctly, thinks the model is great, and being there aren't many full sized versions still in existance, would be a flying memorial to his father and has given his blessing to re-issue the kit if they decide to do so. Who knows when or if it ever will appear again, but they did bring back the 1/3rd scale Fly Baby Bipe. Now if they would only bring back the Der Jager and the Fly Baby Monoplane. Bill D. |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
I've got a part build of the BUSA Der Jager.
I had to order a new set of plans form Balsa USA - came in record time too- all the way to the UK. I'm hoping to get mine sorted next season but i'm saving for a new engine first, orgionally I was going to use a Quadra 42. But advice on here seems to point to a nice zenoah 62. Chris |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
A neighbor had a fully scale that was a really nice plane. He managed to kill himself with it as he was really over his head, tip stall on a pull out at low level. Snapped and went in straight down.

RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
Spoke with a gentleman up around Wichita Falls, Tx. that is building one from
the short kits that Lazer-Works is cutting and his plans are to use a DLE-50, should have plenty of power for those that want out of sight vertical, but the plan was designed origanly for a Quadra 35 and flew very scale with it, after all this is a "Sport Homebuilt" not an all out areobatic purpose built plane. And while I'm on here does anyone have a spare turtle deck they might want to part with, not for me but the guy in Texas, he isn't a computer type, so I said I would ask for him....... Bill D. |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
Bill,
A little off the subject but how have you found Lazer-Works quality? They have many offerings at good prices. I'd just like a little reassurance before I order. Thanks, John |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
As I just wrote in another post:
Lazer-Works will spoil you, "Action Ed" is a great guy to deal with, always has time for his customers, been dealing with him for almost 3 years now he is my first choice when I need cutting done, he will listen to what you have to say and if you find a way to improve one of the kits he cuts he is always open to your suggestions, what ever you need he will do, be it, a large or small project give him a call and discuss it with him, if he doesn't answer immediately he may be in the middle of a set up, leave a message or call him back later. I also find he is very competitive in his pricing. Bill D. |
RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
Is there enough information on the BUSA plans to copy all the wing ribs and fuselage formers to scratch build? I looked at lazer-works and the short kit is only $156. I plan on ordering the plans soon, and I was just curious.

RE: Der Jager 1/3 scale
A short kit is available here http://lazer-works.com/misc.html

John The short kit that is availalble from Lazer-Works was done from an exisiting kit where all of the ribs and formers were scanned into their programing for cutting. Having owned the original kit many years ago I think with all of the scalloped traling edges on the wings, that the price for the laser cut kit is well worth it for the time and accuacy. Having said that it would sure be nice if Balsa USA would decide to re-release this beauty. Bill D. |
