Yes I think the weight of the plane and the length of the struts plays a big part plus the pilots skill at bringing it in ..I just didn't have the right combination.. That was my first try with retracts...I would try again with a scale plane...

I use Spring Air retracts with 3/16" wire struts and fly from a grass field ... no problems unless I make too hard of a landing and bend the struts. If I do make a hard landing I check retraction for clearance before the next flight. No Problem

I have used Robart retracts on numerous airplanes (of recent an Bridi XLT and BTE Reaction 54) and never had a problem with them on or off of grass. True if you prang it in on a landing the gear will bend slightly, but on a personal note I'd rather bend the gear legs slightly rather then tear the gear from the wing. Retracts due require some maintenance to keep 100% operational. That is a given that each pilot makes a choice. I'm putting Robarts in both my UltraSport 1000 and 60. My choice and I expect that they will work fine for me as they have in the past...

Well I'm a little rusty here with my building and need some advice. I am installing the aileron tourque rods(flap tourque rods actually) and the plastic bushings stick out past the slotted trailing edge extensions. To me this seems like it would impede the movement of the alerons (flaps). should I be trimming off the bearing tubes?

I am in as well, better late then never. I bought a kit built 40 off craigslist last year. Was my first nitro and I instantly fell in love with it. I plan to restore mine when I return from Afghanistan. I cant find any 40 sized plans though. I also bought Ultra sport 60 plans. It touched a wing and cartwheeled on a dead stick landing. fuel got into the canopy and discolored it. I rebuilt the wing and had it flying again the following weekend. she still fly's like a dream.

This is only my second kit that I am building. I bought this kit second hand one day when I was visting out local (South Africa) hobby shop. I saw this kit and asked the owner about it and I bought it. The only problem with the kit was that there were no plans in it and only the instruction manual. Everything else was in this kit.
So I started to build and I will attach some picture of how the building is going.

I could oreder the plans form Great Planes, but if you take the currency to South Africa ect, it will be very expensive.
Is their anyone that could take a picture or something of the plan please. I am sure it will help a lot.

My US60 finally flew after a two year build and it flew well. Thanks to my son Kyle who did a great job at the controls for its first flight. The plane flew great and only needed one click of trim. The Tower Hobbies 75 did a good job of powering the plane. The retracts worked real good and really cleaned up the airplane. There was no trim changed needed between gear up and down. No problems with the landing.

Really nice looking plane smkrcflyer. Nice, visable covering job. I've got one of the Tower .75's in an Extra 300 that has served me well. I've heard lots of people complain about that engine but after mine was broken in well, I've had no problems with it. I'm happy that your maiden flight went well.

I nearly lost my US 60 last week to a radio issue. I had pulled up to a stall turn at a high altitude and on the down line I lost radio contact for a brief moment, maybe 3 or 4 sec. It seemed much longer. I had no control and the plane was pointed straight down. I was moving all the controls with no responce. Finally, near the bottom, I heard the engine throttle up and I pulled out of the dive. I circled the field once and landed. When I got home I pulled the reciever, a Frsky 8ch., and replaced it with a new Futaba that I got with a 14SG. I noticed a small crack in the case of the Frsky that was not there before. The reciever seems to be working fine now but I'll never put it in another plane.

gripenaj - I'm sorry, I completley forgot about the pictures, I'll try to get them today. Our club had a big helicopter event this past week that had me pretty tied up.

What brand of retracts are you using? I bought Robart pneumatics appropriate for the size of the airframe but plan to replace the gear legs with harder steel.... I have used Robarts in the past with now problems, even on my BTE Reaction 54 which has had a few hard bumps on landings and they still held up well.

I'm not so sure that ordering plans from RCM-Plans would be a good idea. There are several posts within the RCU and RC-Groups forums of folks having serious problems with paying for a set of plans, get their credit cards charged and for months no delivery....

Very nice airplane Steve and congrat's on the maiden flight. You made me itch more to hurry up and get busy on my two US builds... I have a US1000 with the tail feathers complete and working on the wings. Then there is my US60 I bought from Tower Hobbies about a month ago, still in the box. Quick question for you sir if you don't mind.... How did you tint the canopy to get that nice color? I want to duplicate what you did....

You use ritz fabric dye to tint the canopy with. Get a package of ritz in the color of your choice, liquid or powder, I've used both with no problems. Mix it with 1 - 1 1/2 gallon of very warm water in a container large enough to completly submerge the canopy. You want the water to be hot but not hot enough to soften the plastic. Check the canopy every 5 - 10 min. until it is as dark as you want. You may need to re-heat the mixture, be sure to use a stainless steel container.

This method has worked for me every time.

I did use the ritz fabric dye on the canopy.
