RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
This is in response to post #1767.
Scirocco14: Except for the nose art and the American flag, all of the covering to include the pinstriping and the stars was done using Hangar 9 UltraCote. The pinstriping was made using the MonoKote SmartStripe tool and the stars were cut using a plastic template and a #11 exacto blade [tedious, but a good way to get the exact size needed]. |

ORIGINAL: GaryHarris ORIGINAL: AmishWarlord What size US are you going to make Gary? Hi. I have the 60 size and will probably go against the grain and power it with a Saito 100. I know a 2 stroke is recommended for this plane, but I hate 2 strokes. |
RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
G90 is a bit much.
I don't think a 9 pound plane needs 12.4 pounds of thrust to fly. |
RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
My US 40..hot OS on a pipe and retracts was shredded thru a tree a couple of years ago. I had over 400 flights and 15 years on her. Count me in, as I will build a 40 or 60 size next.

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
ORIGINAL: AmishWarlord That's a good motor for it. With a 14x8 APC prop at 9,500 RPM you should get 9.8 pounds of thrust at 71 MPH estimated flying speed. Just make sure you can clear that 7'' of prop coming down. With 3'' wheels you'll need 6.5'' main gear to give you 1'' clearance from the ground. A 13x8 Master Airscrew running at 9,400 RPM will give you 9.4 pounds of thrust at 71 MPH estimated flying speed. That would give you an extra .5'' of clearance. What is it about 2-strokes that makes you hate them? I'm thinking about powering my US 1000 with two K&B .65 Sportsters. Something my dad told me when I was a kid racing MX. "Maybe when you grow up youll get a 4 stroke." |

My US 60 has a G90 in it. My US60 twin has 2 G90s in it and my US60 15% has an OS120AX in it. A 60 in a US60 would be like putting a V6 in a Vet. I have been flying for 55 years, what do I know, right. My next build is a US1000 25%, 92 inch. wing span, 80CC gas.

A 2012 Corvette was designed for a 668 HP V8
Your stuffing a 1,169 HP super charged V12 engine in it. A sport plane only needs 125 Watts per pound to fly well. A 60 in a US60 is about 150 Watts per pound. Your ST G90 in a US60 is 207 Watts per pound. Your G90 twin US60 is 355 Watts per pound. What do you do with all that power? How long are your flight times? How do they handle when you get a dead stick? What's the stall speed of those planes? Do they slow down nicely for landings? When taxiing do they sit still when your idling or are they always on the move? |

My only other option is a Tower .75 that a friend has that I could trade for. But again there is the muffler issue, I don't like the large Super Tigretype muffler that comes with it. |

I have a US 1000 converted to electric using 12 cell battery set up..flys much better that with the ST 2300. Plane is 20 years old and still is a pleasure to fly.. Ill post a picture if anyone is interested. I need to joint the brotherhood looks like a good link. xxspeed

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
I had a Midwest Super Hots (60 size) that I decided to put a ST 90 into and lets just say it had ridiculous power. The 61 SF engine I had in before had plenty of power.
I can't say it didn't put a smile on my face and made me giggle every time I flew it but it was definitely overkill. As fun as it was, it didn't last long as the engine was starting to rattle the wing mount loose. |
RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
Hi
Please include me in the Brotherhood. I have two 60 size U/sports, one with balsa covered wings, and trike gear, and the second that I am trying to build as light as possible, and with two piece wings on a graphite tube, at shoulder height, not quite finished yet. I will get some photos. Doug Robinson |
RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
Re the power:
I have an OS 75 in one of my U/S's and am planning to put an OS 91 4 stroke in the other. Question: My OS 91 has a damaged fuel pump. Does anyone know if the engine will run adequately with muffler pressure rather than with the fuel pump. Alternatively, it could use crankcase pressure via the backplate connection to the "missing" fuel pump |

I did the maiden flight on my US 40+ yesterday and it went great. However, with the Saito .56 it was underpowered (as someone here had already told me it would be). I brought it home and swaped it out for a Saito .72. Tried it out today and WOW! What a difference another .3 hp makes. Flies great and slows down to a crawl for landing. It does not have verticle power to hover but my skills are not up to that anyway. Running an APC 11X9 prop.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...eeth_smile.gif

Congrats, KaP2011 !
Nice pictures and nice runway. |
RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
Thanks, it's 50' X 200' and I can only hit it half the time hehe. I found a new control surface that I had noticed before but had not paid much attention to. It does wonderful things. One of the guy's I fly with told me it was called the rudder. Huh, who would have known. I can actually steer the plane in the air with it!:)

Beautiful plane KaP. :D

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
Looking Good, KaP2011! It sounds like you had a good time.
Did the retracts work out OK for you? Do you know what rpm you're turning with that prop? |
RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
I didn't check the RPM's today but I intent to check it Wednesday when I go flying again.
I have the retracts locked in the down position for now. Since working with the retracts on my P-40 I have aquired an aversion to mechanical retracts. I started out with the intention of putting the mech. retracts in this plane and my US 60 but since have decided to go with eflite electric retracts. Now I'm just waiting until I have the funds to order the retracts. |
RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
The weather in Spokane has finally improved to the point where it was possible to maiden my US .60 last week. I've five flights under my belt now and it's getting to be fun. It took three flights to get the CG dialed in to the point where it didn't land quite so hot. I finally got my idle speed down a lot which helped with the long float while landing. We have a 600 hundred foot asphalt runway which is plenty long, but I still over ran it once before I got the idle rpm down. I have never had much success using flaps [.60 size Spitfire and Mustang], but on the last two flights I did use flaps and I was surprised at how much they slowed the plane down. With flaps I needed a couple of clicks of throttle on the approach when before I kept the throttle closed completely. The flaps were at maximum deflection [13/16 "] as measured by my Great Planes AccuThrow device. Bottom line, I heartily recommend adding flaps to the Ultra Sport.

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***
Does anyone here have any experience with the E-flite 60 - 120 90-Degree Main Electric Retracts? I have the funds to order them now but I'm a little hesitant, the only experience I have with electric retracts is with a set of cheap ones from china and I was not too impressed.</p> |

well here is my ultra sport .40. Thunder tiger .46 futaba 3004 servos just need to install radio and waitin on my spinner and prop to get here. It's also covered in monokote and i think it turned out terrific. My best effort yet. I included all the mods flaps and moved the retracts out one bay. Hopefully we'll get her maidened here in a few weeks. Phil. Us brotherhood#119
