Did it have this effect on anybody else?? There is one in the showcase at the LHS and it has my name on it. I'm a Saito freak and just had to have it when I saw it. I just don't know what I'm going to put it on. What would you put it on if it was in your toy box?
I was thinking aeroworks 27% ultimate and a DA 50 when I went in this afternoon but when I saw this 2.20 I was hooked so now I've got to rethink my kit. or do I? wonder how it would fly the ultimate? It's rated at 3.5 hp and is said to swing a 20x8 at 9000rpm. but it will be a fuel hungry pig if it's pushed to the limit with to much plane.
LETS HEAR IT, WHAT WOULD YOU HANG IT ON?

You know you suffer from the same problem as me. You just see something that beautiful you just have to have it. Its all part of the addiction. I kinda have it worse because im the manager at the hobby town where i live.
I would say it probally would push the ultimate pretty good but, i have no experience with it. Speaking of fuel hogs yeah i bet that motor will drink a gallon of fuel like no tomorrow. Seeing the fuel some of our club members is feeding the Satio 180 i bet its worse with the 2.20. <lol>

I want one also. When I do get one it will be for a Ziroli 77" Stearman or Wendell Hostetler Jungmeister 77". I think it would be great hiding beside six dummy cylinders.
Well maybe next year because I have too many builds in front of it.

Miloh, Ultra rc just came out with a 29% giles that only weighs 10 1/2 lbs. with a Os 1.6. With the 220 you would probably have an 11lb. plane with 1100 sq. in. of wing. The trim scheme is pretty ''busy'' but by looking at the vidio in the 3D forum It looks like an awsome plane. It has a floating wing that you can adjust the C/G with without adding weight.

For the price and weight of the Saito 220 (fuel has weight) you might as well put a gas engine on the plane. With the amount of fuel that thing will drink and the mess it will make you would be lighter and better off with a 50cc gasser.

I hear ya on the gas deal, In the long run... cheaper and produces more power, that is a fact. "But" to us glow hold outs it's a thing of beauty.
I just can't break that paper towel and windex addiction..............LOL

Well I'm still looking for a nice bird for this motor..........YES!!! I droped the 5 bills. This thing is HUGE. I thought I would go ahead and break it in so I got this old retired DP out and hung it on there. This thing will be pretty wild I'd say as it was a good flyier with a Saito 1.50. Check it out. It fit in the cutout for the 1.50 too. the needle will be in a different place. The carb can not be rotated like the smaller Saitos. It works for this application But......
Hope no body drops theirs on the floor like I did. It's pretty hard on the needle valve!!!!!! good thing I had another.
I got the last spare cowl DP had for it comming and the 540t is back on top.

For me I will say after seeing the YS180 run I am not keen on the fuel bill. An engine that can match the Saito 220 will be the YS160, however the YS needs a muffler system. The YS160 will throw a 20x8 for sure at about 9,000 RPM on 15% fuel, it will definately do it on 30% fuel and the consumption will be low. My YS110 is not a guzzler at all.

The 1.50 was not to bad compaired to the big 2 strokers at our field but a lot more thirsty than my DA 50 is. I'm a Saito freak myself and just had to have it and with a DO 540 edge in the hanger needing a motor it all just kinda came together.
Flight report should be Saturday evening sometime.
As for gas. I was all about it but the thing that got me to go the other way was the thought of the nessassary added weight and complexity. two switches, two batteries, elect ign, wires running everywhere, PCM receiver $$$$$$$!!!!!!,
I will have another bird with gas at some point but for now I'm going GLO. This 2.20 is light as hell too.

Miloh, are you sure you cannot turn the carb around like you can on the Saito 120? I have a DP Edge with a Moki 210 on it but I'm also a Saito freak so the Moki is getting replaced!! I plan on a sideways instalation but I really do not want the high speed needle facing down. how would I get to it with the cowl on? On the Saito 120 when you rotate the carb the high speed needle faces up and it sticks out of the cowl. works great !
Im looking foward to break in and rpm reports. And flight reports on the light weight DPE. I'm still waiting for my LHS to get my 220
.
Thanks, Marc 540

The carb has three mounting screws and they are not symmetrical. hope this makes sence.
Break in??? With Saito??.........I light it up, set it at about 1 full turn off top RPM and let her rip. I'm starting this one out with a 20x6 Zinger. Didn't get to fly today, It will be hopefully tomorrow afternoon. I will take note of the numbers and let you know.

Ok........The manual said it would swing a 20x8. The closest thing the LHS had was a 20x6 so I grabbed it up and headed out. I think this is to much prop, I hope that is the problem. It would only get 7800 rpm with that prop. It sounded sorta labored.
I could not get it tuned just right, It was way fat on the bottom end but I tried to ignore it. set the top end to about 7500 and off we go. It was so fat on the bottom it didn't want to idle so I had to kinda burp it around on the runway. It was a slow day at the field so I had the entire field to my self.........with a hand full of on lookers wanting a show........THE PRESSURE!!!!!!! Well I just burped it up and down the runway till I got the nerve to send it up. FAT FAT FAT!!! smoking heavy but very responsive, wanting to jump off the ground. When it got up it got even fatter and lost I'm guessing maybe 400 or 500 RPMs but even at that it was a monster. When I got it back down I turned the low end in about a half a turn and it then was to lean on the bottom and when I turned it back out it kicked the prop on throttle up. I just couldn't get it tuned in well enough to fly it again but I had a 18x8 at the house and plan to try that tomorrow.
It used no more fuel than my 1.50 that I could tell. I have a 16oz tank and it used about half that on a 8 to 10 minute flight. Maybe I had it way to lean LOL!!!!!! it was not scary hot tho. Anyway I have no doubt it will come on line when I find the prop it likes. I started it with a standard 12v starter and a stout battery. When I turned it over the first I had to check and see if it had a plug in it, seemed to have no compression but when it got fuel and fire there was no doubt it had all it needed. Must need to seat the ring a bit. After it started the first time it took all the starter had to get it spinning but it lit every time as soon as it rolled over the top. Oh yeah!! I turned the bottom end screw in the first time because it would not idle without the glo stick till I did.
All in all it did well considering it was trying to spin to much prop. At least this is what I'm thinking. I'll report again tomorrow evening after I try the other one.
OH YEAH!!!! it sounds great...........kinda like a VW beetle without the whistle.

I have some data with the Zinger 20x6. My Moki 180 would turn this prop at 7500 rpm peak. But your Saito 220 is new. I would think that once broken in, you gain a few hundred rpm, and using 30% nitro fuel will hopefully gain another few hundred rpm. So 8000 rpm w/ a good 20x8 (not Zinger) is not out-of-reach.

while "flying-in" my Saito 180, at 1/2 gallon, it would turn a 17-6 at about 8200.... at one gallon it was at 9200..... it's still gaining.... sooooo.... give it some time !!!!!

I can tell you for a fact the viberation is no where near a 50cc gasser. Nothing came loose, not even the canopy screws. I do happen to own a DA50. and the weight is not bad for the power. and it's a bit less money than the YS I think. the LHS has a YS in the showcase for $550.00 but now that I think it may be a 1.40 sport. not sure how much the 1.60 is. There are a few YS motors at our field and they seem to be trouble for the guys that own them, no one seems to be able to tune them right. I don't and never have own one of them so I don't know whats up with it. I know they must be great motors just no one in our club knows how to make them run. Something about 3 adjustment screws instead of 2?????
My experience with Saitos has always been fire it up and go run it. this is the first one to not go straight out of the box and as I said I think it's the prop selection. I just got all the honey do's done and will head out to the field soon armed with a bit smaller prop. Just remembered I forgot to charge my glo stick so it will ba a while now.
I'll report back this evening. I'm not scared yet.

Yeah!! It's a bit pricey but.... I was going to go with a new DA and the aeroworks ultimate. I got my list together and it went something like this.
DA50 $599
Aeroworks 27% ultimate $449.00
Batteries around $75.00
Receiver PCM around $100.00
Slimline muffler $109.00
Hardware kit $50.00
servos 9 required around $75.00 = $675.00
Prop $20.00
Spinner $60.00
And on and on............
Saito out the door $525.00
DP 540t EDGE in the basement hanging on a hook $0
Battery $19.95
Flying for less than $600.00
This situation made it quite economical for me.

Well the Saito likes the 18x8 a lot. I forgot my battery and tach and volt meter blah blah.....anyway I had to flip it and it started on the first flip. I fliped it backwards and it hit on the first try and I didn't turn the screws at all. I'm guessing it was turning around 8000 maybe a little more maybe a bit less but it was fat as hell so I know it would turn a lot more. It was unlimited vertical at that and used less fuel than I thought it should. Very smooth transition. if you should happen to let one sit and idle fat for a few minutes it's bedt to ease into the throttle as jumping all over it when it's loaded up can result in a back fire. this leads to props and spinners flying around. It didn't throw the prop this time but the spinner went about 30ft. put it back together and no further problems. I did cause a bit of structrual damage with a hard landing that will take a few hours to correct but I thibk the 2.20 is going to settle in very nicely. It seemed to fly tail haevy today for some reason, the only thing changed from yesterday was the prop so I have no clue why it was very scary on landing. When I get it up again I'll get good numbers on the motor.
