Superman Jet Rally CANCELLED

I thought that they had already announced that Superman was a go, but this was on the Pro-mark website:
Most Jet modelers are aware that the FAA has gotten involved with the use of Federally obligated civil airports for sporting activities such as hosting model airplane events.
At this time, it is not beneficial to speculate on how this occurred in 2005 after many years of our successful shared use of these facilities.
It is important to know that after 16 years of hosting the "Super Event" at the Metropolis, IL Airport, the FAA is involved and will render a decision (hopefully very soon) as to the acceptance of the 2005 event.
Very competent people in the AMA and the township of Metropolis are handling this situation in a professional manner.
This notice is for participants & vendors planning to attend Super Jet Week to keep you informed.
We will post the FAA's decision within minutes of receiving it.

Jerry does not yet have WRITTEN approval from the FAA in hand. He plans to post on the official site or BVM site as soon as he does. Until then, it's not final either way. This is "directly" from him, NO ASSUMPTIONS OR RUMOR.

If written approval has never been requested nor granted it would surprise me if written approval will ever be granted.
I think Jerry should look into closing the airport for some sort of maintenance for the week! Just request the Notam for the maintenance closure thereby letting the FAA off the hook so to speak! Send someone out to fix something minor each day per work schedule of course far down at the end of the runway out of our way

A notable US Senator from Missouri tried to no avail to help procure location for ‘05 Ozark Mnt Jets but FAA denied his request.
Sullivan Missouri Chamber of Commerce and the City of Sullivan Missouri also tried to no avail.
If they deny a US Senator’s request, I wonder how somebody else or town could convince FAA otherwise.
Only time will tell.

I plan for Superman 12 months in advance. I am traveling 4500 miles to have fun with my buds and fly r/c jets at a jet meet somewhere in Illinois (or the vicinity) during the last week of September, come hell, the FAA, or high water. [sm=punching.gif]
My suggestion; let the pro's do their job and organize the meet, where ever it might actually be located, and everyone else cool your jets and wait until Jerry officially publishes what he's arranged. Sound reasonable?
All this rumor and theory flinging does nothing but make me want to quit the hobby....or at least quit this forum, or move to Australia where their government hasn't yet seen the inherent evil of law abiding citizens holding R/C jet meets. Tirade over....see you at Superman.....Aloha,
Woody.

Sorry Lee.. there's new rules in place.
The FAA is being pretty hard-ass about allowing airports who receive federal assistance or funding to shut down runways for non-General Aviation related events.

I think Doug means in a bigger picture. Why all the sudden cracking down on airports that host events?? I'm not sure what the catalyst was, but must have been big.
How are the Reno Air Races using a runway??? And what's the difference? I mean, can I fly a cessna into their airport during the event?

Despite all the valiant efforts by TORKS and the city of Columbus Ohio, HOH ’05 was moved to TORKS field because FAA denied their applications. http://www.torks.com/JetScramble/200...A%20letter.pdf
Again, I wonder why Superman would be an exception, but only time will tell.

Sean, i was just being sarcastic there ..
....
basically anything relating to full scale airplanes falls under the FAA .... they consider that "aeronautical" .. anything else acording to them is not ....

From what I know, a town and airport were denied their request to close an airport, which is a small airport with little traffic, for a jet event which had been previously held there with no problems. The local FAA official turned down their request, from what I was told probably due to one full scale pilot who complained that he was inconvienced.
The town officials spoke to the locally based U.S Senator who made some inquiries. Those inquiries were met with some resistance from the local FAA official and it was bumped up the chain.
In my opinion the town officials had every right to question the decision made by the local FAA person since events such as this are held all over the U.S with no problems whatsoever. Like MArk said it is all about the Benjamins, and whose palm is greased where.
The AMA was brought into the Sullivan problem very early from what I was told, but did NOTHING according to my sources until it was already too late. They are caught now trying to put out a fire which in all likelihood will cost us many fly-ins throughout the US. I am sincerely hoping that SM makes it thru this turmoil, since I love that event and plan on being there. Right now I am very pessimistic. If the FAA truly plans to uniformly enforce the rules, as they are written, there is no way that the Superman site can hold the event. The real test is to see if they are really interested in uniformly enforcing these stupid regulations.
The town of Metropolis will have a lot to lose in losing this event, since the impact from the jet events can be very good for small towns (ie, Metropolis, Sulllivan, Bardstown).

From: Mexifornia,
I hope this all gets worked out soon! I know that there are many people traveling thousands of miles round trip paying over $3.00 per gallon to get to this show. It would be a shame that if when they got arrived there was either: (A) a closed jet show, or (B) a jet show that had nobody there because everyone stayed home anticipating the closure! Either way, I hope it works out for the best. I have never been, but the reputation of this Super event makes me check my schedule to see if I can someday get there. Im sure that Jerry will let everyone know ASAFP....the question is: Will it be in time?
Best of luck,
Dave
