I fly helicopters (big surprise coming from the superskids guy) and did fly planes a little about 20 years ago. I want my 11 year old son to fly it, too. He can hover helis and fly the AA's with no problem. All the wing dragon reviews make it sound real good, but I don't know how much I trust them. If nobody here has anything positive to say about the wing dragon V2 (that's owned one), I'll probably pass on it. Otherwise it's 50/50.

Here is my newest mod, finalized, I think. The plane climbs faster, is stable up to 80% power. Once you give it full throttle it may barrel roll while maintaining it's heading. The glide factor is doubled. Try it out. The wing extensions are about 1 1/8". Of all the mods I've done this one is the best for glide and climb ratios. I am using a 30" silk ribbon on it.

Hey Tim!
You don't think your ribbons are causing your motor/ transistor burnouts do you? by causing extra drag?
You certainly are the ribbon king! (...queen?)
Just kidding!

GTX That link did'nt take me to a wing Dragon,but I did have the older version.I don't know what to say,for the price maybe give it a try.The other planes are more expensive,but definitly stronger,with better electronics and extra spare parts included.The T-Hawk is a little bigger and faster than the Skyseeker which is more of a get em up,do some loops and sail around type of plane.Maybe the Wng Dragon first and something better later.

Also I remember you thinking of adding 4 stock AA motors to a plane, I'd
scrap that idea.
I haven't flown my plane with the capacitors yet, too windy, but I'll let you
know how many hours I get out of it.

Maybe the Wing Dragon will be a pleasant surprise. If it doesn't fly great, I'm sure some mods can be done to it for less than the $90 difference that the other planes cost. The thing is, with this type of plane, you can't go by the price. The cost to manufacture any of these models (like wing dragon, freedom or t-hawk) is about the same. The quality of moldings, materials and workmanship can vary, but the cost is still about the same.

ferndale,
i tought of this yesterday (after my aa land in wather, i was drying it with the vacuum cleaner) about that you think you're frying the rx with wind... you should try a fried rx with still an engine running (just in case you fry or destroy something else). wire it to have an amp meter, put it to full throttle and use your vacum cleaner to create wind. this way you know what's going on with the amp.
let us know if you tried it.

More great creativity from Ferndale AF. I went back to stock (more or less) on both my biplanes and monos but like your newest idea. Guess I'll have to buy another AA.

After flying my AA with the added top wing extensions (which is now in the pine trees, lost forever), I got in the mood for a larger plane to fly in the field. I've been thinking of the Wing Dragon which I can get for $95 (includes shipping) on eBay. I think it's the same guy I bought my Lama2 heli from and his shipping was fast.
Here's a couple links to reviews:
[link=http://www.masportaviator.com/ah.asp?CatID=15&ID=92]http://www.masportaviator.com/ah.asp?CatID=15&ID=92[/link]
[link=http://www.rchobby.co.uk/wing_dragon_-_ep_rtf_trainer.html]http://www.rchobby.co.uk/wing_dragon_-_ep_rtf_trainer.html[/link]
And some flying videos:
[link=http://www.hobby-lobby.com/wingdragon.htm]http://www.hobby-lobby.com/wingdragon.htm[/link]
It's supposed to fly slower (when you want it to) and turn tighter than most of the other trainers.
Does anybody here have it?

Hey Wecky & GTX!
As a long-time R/C flyer with many hundreds of hours (and models....) under my belt, I reckon the spex of the Wing Dragon look just about perfect for an introduction to 3-axis R/C flight.
You get a pusher prop, so no chance of breaking it; replaceable bits e.g. wings - good news; Tx, Rx and servo's which u can re-use as and when, and an ELEVATOR to get u out of trouble in a hurry,
You can't go wrong! I haven't seen one of these, but I'll eat my hat if it isn't an immediate success. They now sell them here in the UK, but GPI models (above) is an expensive source.
Get one and fly like the birds!
Ayrton
P.S. oh and when u get good, u can put in a cheap brushless motor and some (light) LiPos, and be a REAL HOOLIGAN in your local kiddie park!

The two rx issues I've had were on unmodded bipes. Ok I took the spars off of one. The ones I wore out seem to be battery issues. They had approximately 40 hrs flight on them, or around 250 charge cycles. Thats four flights a day for 2 monthes. I haven't seen any issues since I added the ribbons. Our weather pattern switched and I lost 2 planes in 2 days. Now they have ribbons. I only got one back. The ribbon material could be an issue though. I'm using silk, adds drag but almost no weight. Clothe or nylon ribbon would weigh more and could create issues.
BTW, on the underwing mod Im down to 1 inch from the fuselage. Still good. Tim

Cobalt, it might work with the entire wing. I haven't read of anyone doing a big wing w/o dihedril, but I didn't use any. Try it!

I'm not complaining. It's cheaper than fishing.
Here's a range check for you. I just recovered the W mod from a tree 80+ yards away. I shut down because I couldn't see it anymore. I was around 45 feet up, in a wind trap. 100 ft range? Ha.
Cobalt, I just noticed that wing root and wing tip are about parallel. My earlier misgivings were about getting the wing tip to far out front causing the plane to want to roll. I got lucky with that because I used leftover parts from another experiment.

Yeah, I didn't climb the tree. It was down to about twenty ft when it landed. A peice of trim work and a 6 ft person. Plane is recovered. Tim

i have mine like that. Each one has about an inch dihedral and holy, im havin trouble keepin the thing down! it also has just about two feet of 1/4 ribbon tied to the back. I have the motors moved out to right next to the old strut mounts.
